I have stayed on the Jolly Harbour complex four times now and am looking forward to going again next year.
The villas are really fabulous with its own veranda and the facillities are a home from home. The complex itself is quite large to navigate and I always rent a golf buggy whilst I'm there so I can flit from place to place. The only downside of that is that the rental of these buggies are extortionate.
The complex itself is my idea of paradise. I love to start my evening in the quirky Dogwatch Tavern (usually playing the Rolling Stones or some British music act) and have a few games of pool, before moving on to the BBR Sports Bar, which is a typical Caribean bar overlooking the swimming pool. I like to sit at the bar and drink my cocktails and talk to Woody, the barman. Then I move onto the Driftwood bar (I think it ihas another name now) which is located right on the beatiful white sandy beach. There are many restaurants and a new casino on the complex where you can finish your evening.
Jolly Harbour really is very beautiful. My first trip there in 1996 has left an indeible love for the country. I remember seeing the white beaches and the turquose sea for the first time and the it was so spectacular it took my breath away.
People on the complex (many have homes there) pretty much keep themselves to themselves, but I found most locals lovely to chat to and wasn't bothered too much atall. I have been three times with my boyfriend and the last time I took my mother.
I always feel safe at Jolly Harbour and always come look forward to my next trip.
Antigua as a country is absolutely breath taking. When you see a photograph of it, imagine it looking ten times nicer and thats what you'll see when you get there!
The only downside is the airport seems unable to cope with the deluge of planes that now visit the island. Every time I land there is a massive queu through passport control and people in Antigua never rush for anybody - hence not a good start, but all that said - you soon forget all about it!
