I am surprised at the last review then realized it mentioned being unhappy with the entire island; not just the resort. Because our trip was wonderful and we loved the island too! There are some renovations finishing up at the resort, but it easy to see the end result will be even more remarkable.

Anyway, we had a grand time. The staff was so responsive and engaging; exactly what we’d expected on holiday. The front desk was efficient with getting us checked-in and was always friendly, willing to offer suggestions and information about the resort and places to see on the island. The beach is ideal for sunning and playing. We took out early one morning to hike to an old fort on the hill next to the beach. The view was breath-taking and the exercise exhilarating. The food was wonderful; the afternoon teas allowed us a snack and rest before going back to the beach or off to the pool. The coffee machine at the lobby bar serves some of the best cappuccino and lattes I have had in awhile. The Lagoon Restaurant is beautiful, Barrington is captivating and Andes, the beach side restaurant, overlooking the ocean are a great place to eat. Ask the server about the local history, they will gladly share stories about the island. Great fun for the entire family. Other guests seemed as pleased as us and there were several people from boats in the harbor told us they were enjoying a day trip at the resort. I just can not express how much we enjoyed ourselves. We went into town on several occasions and found the shops fun and everyone quite welcoming. We have made several trips to the Caribbean and this island is among the friendliest! We will definitely be back and highly recommend it as a Caribbean destination and adventure.

If you are thinking about staying here then dont it is dirty and horrible. I stayed for just over a week and as soon as i arrived i couldnt wait to get home! My mum got food poisining from the disgusting, dirty beach bar and was ill for the duration of the holiday.
Going out on a night is also horrible it is dirty and run down all around the town.
PLASTIC GLASSES in the hotel too.
Swimming pool dirty!
If you hate bugs then this is not the place for you there are cattipilars the size of snakes!!
DONT GO THERE!!

This was my first time to Antigua to watch Cricket World Cup. Even though India didnt qualify for th super eight we had many things to do . One of the best thing was staying at Royal Antigua which is an exotic location and recommandable for honeymooners. This place gives you every thing Privacy,Relaxation and satisfication.

Though the room service was not up to the expecation but the Royal Antigua has made a special place in my memories for ever.

I have traveled quiet extensively over the world and have been at hotels both for my business as well as leisure trips. I have been to some of the best hotels and some of the not so good ones. The ROYAL Antiguan, by far has been the WORST hotel I have stayed in so far. The location is fabulous, however, the state of the property, the staff and the attitude is apalling.

I went there in April '07 and had to spend a night there. We were visiting Antigua for the World Cup Cricket 2007. We were originally a party of 4 and I had made my reservations accordingly - 2 rooms USD$270/each room. Some of the members on our party dropped out and finally there were 3 of us on this trip - 2 Adults and a 5 year old. I tried to cancel one of the rooms way in advance (week in advance) but they said the rooms were NON-refundable. Eventually we got to the hotel and was really taken aback by what USD$270/night was going to get me. The lobby was the shabbiest I have ever seen in my life. Very poorly maintained, a fountain with trash floating in it, no one at the gates, and no luggage trolley to even get my luggage to the reception to check in.

Once I got to the reception, I requested to have one room canceled again, but they refused. At this I asked them to upgrade me to one ocean view room. Initially the clerk lied and said that none of those were available. I eventually asked to see the manager on duty and after explaining to him how unhappy I was he "upgraded" me to an ocean view room.

On getting to the room, I was again apalled at the condition of the bathroom. The bathtub was stained and the shower curtains were dirty. The linen on the beds were not ironed and did not appear to have been properly washed. The room did not even have a real glass. There were 2 plastic glasses there for us to use. The door did not have a safety latch/deadbolt (see photos) and the door appeared to have been pried open earlier. The room sign was handwritten.

Last bu not the least was the buffet we went to for dinner. The menu was not like what you would get at a good Vegas buffet, but it did not even get close to some of the All-Inclusive buffets I have been to in Jamaica or Hawaii. There were no signs that specified how much they were charging for the dinner buffet. No drinks (other than water - we had to pay for the bottled water) were included. After we had chewed down some really hard ham, and turkey, we were hit with the bill - USD$40/person for the dinner. Good heavens!

So overall my impression has been that this place needs a major overhaul before anyone should venture to stay there. This place is simply NOT worth the money.

  • Liked — The views and the beaches were really nice - hey that's Antigua.
  • Disliked — Attitude of staff and folks.

We just spent 15 glorious days in Antigua. As usual we stayed at the royal antiguan which is currently under renovations. Because of this the hotel was very quiet; but the service was fantastic as usual. Now, if you are looking for a place to entertain you; right now the royal is not the place for you.
The renovations are coming along nicely and the rooms that are already completed are beautiful. They hope to have it up and running by Cricket which is a the end of March.
The beach at the royal is very nice and the food is very good.
We can't wait to go back next year, when all will be completed and the resort will once again have it's former flair.
While we were there we visited other beaches: Galley Bay and Hakwsbill and the beaches there are not as nice as the Royal.
Thanks to everyone at the royal you are all amazing and we can't wait to see you next March
