Just discovered this website looking for our next holiday (and very tempted to return to the royal), we stayed at the Royal last January and it was fantastic.
Good points:
-The most stunning beach in Antigua
-Friendly staff
-Excellent well equipped room overlooking beach and lagoon (we had a superior room)
-Great food (and i'm vegetarian!) - Lunch at the Andes is not to be missed, it sits on struts out over the sea, feed the barracuda with your left overs - although you won't leave much, the food was fantastic !
-Safe swimming - nice gentle sloping beach, you can see fish by your feet without even needing a pair of goggles (no sharks or barracudas seen when swimming though!)
-Montserrat - this was a day out we are glad we didn't miss, it was $125 - that included ferry trip to montserrat, lunch and a full days tour. We were taken round montserrat by the chief of police responsible for the evacuation, we walked on lava, amazing!! The ferry journey back was very choppy though !!
- Historic Fort on the right of the beach - worth a hike up the hill (wear some good shoes though!), fabulous views of the bay and the cruise ships.
- Hotel Pool - always very empty with very few people around it (the beach was too stunning to resist), plenty of sunbeds, swim up bar :-)
- Excellent range of drinks included on the AI package
- Beach Bar
- Good entertainment most nights
Bad points
- I'm a keen windsurfer (although out of practice!!) but I found the current in the bay to be very strong and I didn't feel the windsurfing was that safe as there was no rescue boat. Whilst out windsurfing on my first day the rope that attaches the sail to the mast snapped and I got taken towards rocks by the current, it was some time before I was rescued and it was a little scary !! Eventually a local called "plastic" came and got me on a jet ski. However windsuring aside i cant think of any other bad points!
For a relaxing holiday in a georgeous location you won't beat the Grand Royal for price, value & beauty!
