“Good vacation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

This is a very nice 3 star hotel so if you go don't expect 5 stars. The hotel properly and the beach are beautiful but the hotel has been neglected for a long time and they are just starting to pick up so there are very few people still at the resort. Mostly older couples in their 50 and 60. But it looks like they are having a good time. They go there for peace and quite and its exactly what you get.
There is so little people that you know them all and they know you. If this is what you like go for it, its a perfect place for that. Have in mind that there are no shops on site (but the town is very short taxi or bus ride away). There is no entertainment of any sort, and there is nothing to eat between meals. Food is fine, not the best, not too many choices. Really good fish everyday.
Staff is very friendly, rooms are large and clean.
We went there to see the island so we didn't spent much time at the hotel as there is not much to do but to enjoy the beach (which is amazing)and the sun. If that's all you need then it is a place for you.

Room Tip: Choose ocean view as the mountain has no balcony and not a nice view. But I think you can risk it an...

We went with a group of 18 other friends and acquaintances, so we were our own entertainment, which gave us something to do after supper besides sit at the bar. The staff and the beach are second to none. Our group consensus was that it was like going to your cottage but not having to cook or clean. Most of the food was pretty good considering that the cuisine was mostly Carribean, which doesn't always have the best red meat, but their fish was always tasty.
The beach was the place to be, as the bay calms the ocean waves, and the sand is great. There's an old fort to climb to and if it's calm enough, snorkeling. Papa Les provided us with activities during the day like volleyball. Lunch is served at the beach bar, and the greatest variety of food, as it's a menu. Everything was good to eat here.
The pool was nice, but not designed for a resort - it's 8 feet deep, except for the swim-up bar, so you can't move around the pool with your drink or do any activities. But great for some exercise.
The rooms were fine, but mosquitoes were a problem for some at night, even if you kept your windows closed.
On one night, supper was served in the Barrington Room and that was the best food of the week, the pork tenderloin got excellent reviews. The only reason to rate food less than excellent was the repetitiveness of breakfast and supper for the most part.

Room Tip: Get a lagoon view, the higher the better

We stayed at this resort Dec 12-19, and we enjoyed every day there! Rooms are OK, quite spacious, view from the balcony is awesome - you can see cruise ships passing by every morning and night. Yes, property is outdated and needs some updates. But the bay, the beach are the best ones on the island! Giorgio Armani's villa is there, not far from the resort, too! Crystal clear turquoise water and a very relaxing beach. We didn't have many people at this time , but we liked it- the whole beach belonged to us:)). Food is repetitive, but everything is tasty! A new manager is very nice, and all the staff works really well! Sharon was our favourite waitress, thank you very much! The only thing, that we missed there was some music - in the lobby, at the restaurant..And more fruits would be good to have too. But overall, it's a nice place for a quiet, relaxing getaway. My husband and I revisited the Royal Antiguan in dec. of 2012, after 25 yrs. We had read the
reviews and were a little concerned, but we need not have worried. The rooms are first rate, the staff amazing, the view even more incredible than we remembered, and the beach is second to none. It is true that they have had some issues in the last 5 yrs., but a great effort has been made in the last year to address them. Because of poor reviews, the place does feel deserted, as is likely to be the case for a place so large, but the amenities are still excellent and kept spotless. The only major problem is the tennis courts; they are unplayable except for 2 courts,
whcih are just functional.

We would not hesitate to go there again. , especially if the courts are going to be improved.(though there is no doubt that the bay beach more than makes up for it)

thank God for Antigua, Rob and Anita Hancock

Room Tip: upper floors have a better view beachside

I live in the Caribbean and visit the Royal Antiguan whenever I visit Antigua. The rooms are great, mainly with fantastic views. The beach is lovely and the grounds and pool are nice too. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful and have always been very accommodating if I've asked to spend the day there while waiting for a plane. There's a nice restaurant over the sea at the beach. It's a bit pricey, but the food is good. There are also lots of little stalls on the beach selling nice jewellery and some clothing. There are usually watersports on offer, sailing or jet skiing. The breakfast is good value, too, at the main restaurant. It is very quiet - for some reason, it never seems very full these days.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea facing room, preferably on a higer floor.

We stayed for 2 nights in this hotel and the accomadations were poor: the bathrooms were old, tv was outdated, the sliding doors to the balcony were very rusted and were very hard to open, and had a lack of hot water for 2 days. Out of 2 elevators only 1 was working. I cannot say anything bad about the staff, they were nice and helpful, and possibly one of the only ways to keep customers. The tourist agent from St. James Travel and Tours, Laurie Laville, did everything possible to improve our stay in Antigua. Thanks to her we can say we had a good vacation. She helped to find a new hotel, and made the transition very smooth and easy for us. Thanks to her we had a good time, a nice vacation, and a happy Christmas.
Thank you Laurie you are the best!

Liat put us up at this hotel after cancelling our flight from Antigua to San Juan. Beautiful property with great beach. Saturday night. The hotel is off by itself, a $30 taxi ride to St. Johns. It's a great place to stay if you like peace and quiet. Were it not for a few soccer teams and a honeymooning couple, we would have had the place to ourselves.
