Stayed here recently to host a large entertainment show. The conference room has been newly renovated and was ideal for our needs (160 Seted-would do over 200). Although the hotel is undergoing refurbishment my room was large, clean and well tended by the staff. The location was fantastic looking over the grounds and lagoon and is only ten minutes in a car from St John's. The private beach is beautiful and has a dedicated restaurant which served good food. All members of staff were polite, helpful and very freindly. Despite being a little tired around the edges, the hotel is well worth a visit.

We stayed one night at this hotel after disembarking from a Windjammer Cruise. Loved the cruise, did not like the hotel. The property was beautiful but the staff, the room and the food left alot to be desired. Personally, I was not enamored with Antigua at all, and the icing on the cake was our stay at this hotel. Based on what I've read on this website, it doesn't sound like it's improved much since then either.

Me and my boyfriend stayed at this hotel from Oct 13 - 17. This is our second stay at the hotel, our first being in 2004. The hotel itself looks pretty good. However, the overall experience could have been better. The first room we were given, the AC didnt work, and so we had to be moved to a different room. In the second room, the AC worked, but the door leading to the balcony wouldnt close. We had to get maintence to come and rectify that. Our room seem to be recently renovated, and so the bed and furnishings were new. HOWEVER, the bed sheet had an odd smell to it, and the pillows were totally flat. Also, in the bathroom, the drain for the tub seemed to be somewhat clogged, and water did leak out onto the bathroom floor. Guess they havent quite gotten around to renovating the bathroom.

We had breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel. When we got it, it was cold, and so wasn't enjoyable at all. It cost about 38 USD, for breakfast for two.

On a lighter note, the hotel surroundings is gorgeous, and it has its own private beach.

I think I read somewhere that Crowne Plaza should be taking it over, so I anticipate that this hotel will be much better once they do.

Despite the negatives of this hotel, I will probably stay here again, since driving into town is alot closer than another resort called Jolly Beach.

However, if you dont mind the distance, I would recommend Jolly Beach, where the food is alot better and the service is EXCELLENT.

We arrived at early evening at Antigua airport and took taxi (US$20 one way, return was US$27) to get there. Although in the original information says hotel provides free shuttle, the information was wrong. Night reception doesn't even show wellcome in the face and no one else to assist at the robby. When we mentioned about the shuttle he just says "You are greatly misinformed". Looing from the light in the room, the hotel seems almost empty. Yet we were put in the room facing the steep hill with no view. The room doesn't seem to be well taking care of, certainly not the resort hotel. When we went out to find the place to eat, a security silently approached us again without any smile or warm wellcome. Restraurant at the beach front was pleasant but food was substandard (local beer was pretty good, though). Following morning during check out again we have to face two male and female unpleasant looking reception. This hotel just seems to be lacking any kind of employee training on how to treat the guest.

“Secluded Resort”

Grand Royal Antiguan Beach Resort

We stayed at this resort for 6 days. It seems to be 20 percent full. The resort is located in a secluded area. So you will be dependent on taxi or car rental. I will recommend renting a car because taxi can be quite expensive. The hotel runs a shuttle to downtown, St. Johns to the market.
Part of the hotel is still under remodling. At the speed they are going I do not expect them to finish the upgrade unless someone with alot of money comes along. However the grounds of the resort are well kept and there are adequate security. There are 6 tennis courts but they are in disarray. We were disappointed about the tennis courts since that was one of the reason that we chose this place. The food at the restaurant is very expensive and it is not worth the price. I was happy that we did not take the all exclusive package. You can get much better meals downtown at the Commissioners Grill, or Hemingway. The Garden Restaurant on High Street is not that expensive and comes with a local flavor.

We were upgraded from Lagoon view to Ocean view at no additional cost. The difference in the views are the floors number. The room was out dated but clean and the service was pretty good. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

The beach and pool were kept clean but there were no activity at the hotel. The beach is excellent.
Comparing the price at the other resorts, the Antiguan is reasonable but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for".

We went to the Antiguian carnival - 2 days parade of the troops and it was beautiful but not as elegant as Trinidad's.
