We stayed at the Siboney for a week. Our first impressions were what a dump!. The large amount of money we payed did not show through. 1. Local area: very little around, a swomp one side and a lovely beach the other. A beach resturant with good food but were over chraged on our bill 3 out of 5 times. It was the only resturnant around, although you could eat at one of the other 2 hotels. 2. Hotel rooms: very very over priced. small 1 bedroom, tiny very basic, dated kitchen, but it worked. Thank god for the fridge, as this kept our drinking water cool. decor very dated and simple. AC only in beedroom. Despite window screens, we were eaten alive by insects. main sliding door had no screen. This didn't help. A nice patio as we were on groung floor. 3. Hotel grounds: lovely lush tropical gardens. 4. location: other than a very charming, postcard beach, there is nothing else. please note there is no public transport and taxi's are very expensive. (24-28$US to travel 4-5 miles-and I though living in London was a rip off.
5. Hotel staff: most of the time very pleasant, owener very nice. Although on check-out the staff failed to make it clear that the late check-out bill was in $US, not in local $EC. Therefore the latecheck-out resulted in a very over priced uexpected bill.
6 Over all view of Antigua: Very Very over priced and a very poor value for money destination. (accomidation, food- nothing to write home about., transport). Furthermore you are forced to pay everything in $US. despite a fixed $US-Local$EC exchange rate, much of the time the bills were caculated with a independant exchange rate. Yet again you are ripped off.
Despite the Siboney hotel being over priced and poor value for money compared to other holiday destinations around the would, it is however a reasonable hotel compared to what the island has to offer. Last note: for those of you who are not American: take $US notes as the ATM's are much of the time out of order. we were stuck without money for 3 days as 100% of all ATM's were faulty. arranging money over the bank counter is a very very lengthy task. You don't need the hassel.
