We apologise for the long review but there are lots of things we wanted to include that we hope others will find useful.
We stayed at Blue Waters for two weeks in April (15th – 29th) and got married on the 21st.
Arriving at the airport is the most hassle you will have all holiday as immigration is too small to cope will the number of people arriving. You either need to be first in the queue or just chill and join the queue when it dies down a bit, use the opportunity to catch some sun!
When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted with a cold towel and a glass of rum punch, which is exactly what we needed. The formalities were quickly dealt with and Benji, who was very helpful, showed us to our room. We had a room in block 100 and it was clean, modern, of reasonable size and well equipped, the coffee machine was great. It also had a an excellent view of the sea.
The sea was quite cloudy whilst we were there which was very disappointing; it did clear for about 3 days during our stay though. If you want to see fish go out on Tony’s glass bottomed boat. You will have an excellent couple of hours with Smokey out on the reef snorkelling and then it is rum punch all the way back. It cost us USD30 each and was worth every penny. Smokey is a great guy and looks after you well. He was very helpful to those who are not that confident snorkelling. If you do go on this trip it is worth taking a disposable water proof camera to photograph the fish.
We stayed on an all-inclusive basis and are glad that we chose this option as it took all the hassles out of paying for meals, mini bar and drinks.
The two restaurants are excellent. Our favourite was Vyviens since it was very quiet and relaxed with attentive staff and fantastic food; the lobster chowder was especially good. The Palms restaurant is classed as a buffet restaurant and on most nights (and lunch times) you could order off the menu. The food here was also very good and varied. If it hadn’t have been for Vyviens we would have been happy to eat there every night.
We got married at the end of our first week and the wedding day went without a hitch. We have to say a big thank you to Cindy (who is the hotel’s wedding coordinator) as nothing was too much trouble for her and she ensured that the day was perfect. Cindy chose the registrar and we have to thank her for her excellent choice.
We chose to have a steel band, a video and the photograph package in addition to the hotel’s wedding package. It was great to have the steel band play; the video is of good quality as are the photographs (presented in an album). Our only gripe was that there were no pictures of the bride walking to the wedding gazebo with her father before the wedding ceremony. To have these we had to pay an additional amount for an extra set of digital photographs that were on a CD of about a 120 pictures. It wasn’t the cost of these extra photographs that annoyed us, it was the fact that it felt that this was done on purpose to make us buy the extra photos. It would be best if the hotel gave a photograph package that includes both traditional and digital photographs rather than charge extra for the digital.
We had our wedding meal in the Cove restaurant which is a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. The manager of the Cove, Yves, did us a wedding menu where we had the choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts so our party, of 12, had a reasonable choice. He also included Champagne on arrival and wine and water throughout the meal. When we arrived at the Cove we were served glasses of Champagne and strawberries whilst we relaxed on the terrace taking in the view of the wedding gazebo and the sunset. The staff were great and had set up the table with some decorations that we had taken out with us. When the meal arrived it was fantastic and was probably some of the best food I have eaten in a restaurant. Yves was an excellent host and made sure that our evening was very special.
We went back to the Cove for another meal on the last night of our holiday and, again, the food and service were fantastic.
The Cove has only been open for a few months and, from our experience, it deserves to be very successful.
Whilst in Antigua, we went to Shirley heights on the Sunday for the weekly party that is held up there and it was a great night out. We left at about 19:30 but wished we had stayed longer. We also had a morning in Saint Johns which was worth visiting for a couple of hours. Whilst there, we had a drink in Hemingway’s bar which is a good place to just chill and watch the world go by.
We also went on a trip round the island in an air conditioned jeep (Classic Safari) which was a good day out. Our guide, called Simon, was very knowledgeable of the island, friendly and polite. There was a good choice of tasty food for lunch, served at the tour companies own premises. I highly recommend this tour as you get to see all the main sites; Nelsons Dockyard, Shirley Heights, Interpretation Centre, Betty’s Hope sugar plantation, Devils Bridge, etc. from the comfort of an air conditioned jeep.
Would we go back to Blue Waters Hotel? Absolutely!
