“got married at Blue Waters”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2005

We went to Blue Waters for a day visit whilst staying in Antigua last October to see if it was a suitable venue for our wedding in May 2005.
We descided straight away that this was the place.
We had a wonderful time at Blue waters.
The wedding co-ordinator Cindie Joseph was a true professional and made sure our day was perfect.
The hotel was very good but the reception staff had had a charisma bypass
and are in need of some training.
Our room in the 200 block was ok but not as good as the 100 block so if you go insist on a 100 block room.
The food was excellent and it was good to be served drinks in the proper glass which is not the case in some all inclusive hotels in the Caribbean.
Some dissapointments.
Vyviens restaurant was listed as being for adult only dining but this rule was not adhered to as we encountered children dining in there on more than one occasion on our holiday.
The Spa is definately in need of some attention and the staff are only ordinary.
There was always sufficent sun loungers and there was no need to get up early to put towels on them as there were few German guests around.
The water sports were ok and you have to try the hobby cats, easy to handle once taught.
Entertainment was ok but they would insist in having a break from playing just when people were ready to dance.
On the whole a very good hotel and one to visit.
a tip if getting married, dont leave it till the last minute to obtain you DVD and wedding photos as ours didn't arrive until we were ready to leave the hotel, and when we wanted to view the DVD to ensure it was ok it became a major operation for the hotel staff. They were scurrying around trying to find a DVD player that worked.

We have just returned from Antigua after spending 2 weeks at Blue Waters on our honeymoon. We did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before deciding on this hotel, and boy am I glad we did! We heard bad reviews from other couples staying at other hotels on the island and didn't have the heart to tell them about how excellent Blue Waters is.

After spending quite some time at the airport getting through passport control (please note you need to fill in a white immigration form and pink form before getting any further) we got the cases straight away. The wait for the taxi was very hot but it gets you into the laid back way of life and we weren't bothered about waiting. The quick drive to the hotel took us past some private houses and then we arrived at Blue Waters. We were welcomed with rum or fruit punch which was gladly accepted and sat down to fill a form in. We were then shown to our room and round the hotel by the concierge and he took the bags upstairs to our Deluxe Beachfront room. We were in block 600 which overlooks the small beach and the gazebo (for weddings). The room was clean and well kept, plenty of space with 2 wardrobes and a well stocked mini bar. The air conditioning was great and remained on for 2 weeks.

Every evening the maid came round to turn back the bed cover and deliver a daily sheet with information about the following day activities and menu for the Palm restaurant. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of hot and cold food to start the day. I was glad to see the standards were high regarding keeping the food hot and covered and eggs were cooked on request. We tended to eat our lunch at the pool bar as the breakfast was so filling. This offered toasted sandwiches and baguettes both served with chips. The Palm restaurant offered more selection but tended to be bigger meals. We took the opportunity to have a picnic ordered for when we explored the island which was handy and was provided as part of the all inc package in a large cool bag. At some point during the day you have to book which restaurant you wish to dine in. This was never a problem and just means that no-one is disappointed and gets the best quality service.

The food in the hotel was excellent! We can be quite picky at times but we enjoyed every meal we had. The Palm restaurant offers a different menu every night with a BBQ on Monday and a Caribbean buffet on Saturday (I think). The choice was excellent with a choice of meats, fish or vegetarian every night. The service was also excellent with wine and water being topped up continuously. Vyviens was also excellent with the menu changing on Mondays and Thursdays. Couldn’t fault the food or service.

The hotel grounds are well kept with gardeners working all day to keep up the standards. There are 3 pools, 2 with bars and one without. The one on the right towards the wedding gazebo was always empty and we had it to ourselves most of the time. This pool has the coolest water as the one with the decking gets quite warm. The beaches are also excellent, one being very quite and again had it to ourselves. As the hotel is not huge (like others) there is always somewhere you cna go to be on your own if you want to. It was very relaxing and a great place to chill out.

Overall, I rated this hotel and 5* and could not fault anything. All the taxi drivers also said it was one of the best on the island. I want to thank all the staff as they made it the best honeymoon anyone could ask for by treating us so well. Drinks flowed and always with a smile.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone, you’ll regret it if you stay anywhere else!

Just returned from Blue Waters after having spent 3 weeks getting married and having our honeymoon there. So I feel I am well placed to give a fair review of the resort

Rooms: It’s true that some of the rooms are tired looking, but ours was clean, roomy and sufficient for our needs, we had various friends staying in the new block 100 and they are the better rooms, but also a lot smaller than an old room. Also some friends stayed in a suite which was truly stunning.

Food : Palm restaurant was good with the food being fresh and tasty. Vivyns is very good indeed and also a very nice environment to dine in.

Wedding: This is arguably the best part of the hotel and can’t imagine a better location and setting for having a beach wedding. It was everything that we could have wanted it to be and more, you have to experience it to believe it.

Pools/ Beach: because of the number of rooms being only 77 you never had to worry about finding somewhere to relax and feel too crowded. Although the main pool does seem like it needs to be renovated.

Staff : Very good and friendly and were truly excellent with our 9 month old daughter. (Carolyn deserves a special mention).

Finally to give you a good indication about the place we had an extremely wealthy friend staying at the resort with us, he has travelled and stayed at the finest place the world has to offer and travles everywhere first class! and he just loved the place and plans to go back there!

We have just returned from Blue Waters and spent a glorious 12 nights there.

All the staff are very friendly and accomodating (the reception staff could do with putting on a smile now and again though). Service was excellent throughout.

With only 77 rooms the resort is very small and intimate. This is great if you are like us and enjoy a quiet time with nothing but sunbathing, reading, relaxing, eating and sleeping, but no so good if you want more. We met a few people (mostly under 30) who complained of being a bit bored.

We were not quite pepared for the humidity (90%) and this can be very sticky and uncomfortable at this time of year - so best to think carefully about attire especially if you are intending to marry here. But the wedding gazebo is wonderfully breezy and cool. We had a few cloudy days with a bit of rain/thunder - to be honest - it was a welcome respite from the heat and didnt last long.

As we chose the wedding package (free if you spend 10 nights or more), we were upgraded to a beachfront room. We were very fortunate to be in 100 block and currently these are the only rooms that have been refurbished. Some others we spoke to said that their rooms were a little 'tired' looking - but our was immaculate and everything was brand new. Everything you could want is in the room - tea/coffee making facilities, a proper iron and ironing board and a decent hairdryer. Towels are changed daily and bedding is changed every other day and the rooms are serviced daily and kept immaculate. Restocking the mini bar can be a bit of a pain - you have to fill in a form a leave it outside in order to get supplies - and then you dont always get them.

The food could not be faulted and there was a great choice. Vyviens is well worth a visit - but be sure to book in advance. Be warned - you need to book for dinner every day. If you dont like cats - sit inside and they wont bother you. Even if you sit outside - they wont bother you if you ignore them.

The beach is small but adequate and we never had any problems with having our own space without being on top of anyone else. I was stung by jellyfish a couple of times (though I didnt see them), but it is no big deal - its just a little sting that goes off after a few minutes. Be careful with the water sports - particulary kayaking & sailing - they will let anyone out there regardless of experience - and if you are a novice I would recommend you get some tuition first. Even though the water looks flat calm - you can come across some unexpected rough waters and it can be a job to get back to shore if you don't know what you are doing.

We met some fantastic people there (hi to Lou and Geri, Sean and Donna from the US, Anita and Kevin). It was just the 2 of us that went, and we wanted our wedding day to be intimate and romantic and it was both and as an added bonus - the people we met there were so lovely (staff and guests) they made it even more special.

It is important to plan your day - i.e. think about what you want to do after the ceremony etc and for dinner otherwise you could be left feeling a bit high and dry after the ceremony. As we walked down to the wedding gazebo (which is gorgeous) all the guests on the beach and in the bars clapped, whistled and cheered and we didnt feel on our own at all. After the ceremony - we took our cake to the pool bar and and shared it with the guests. We then went for dinner at Vyviens and danced and drank the night away to the local band. As there is only 1 wedding a day at Blue Waters (and the Manager told us they limited it to 3 per week) you really feel that it is YOUR day. I did notice that there were some couples who were upgraded to suites or even Rock Cottage for their wedding, I am not sure what made them special - maybe it was because they took large parties with them.

This is truly an idyllic location for those wanting a romantic and quiet getaway. We didn't want to come home!

Had a wonderful holiday at Blue Waters.
From the moment of arrival the staff make you feel very welcome and this carried on through the holiday.
Rooms are nicely decorated with lovely verandah to sit on.
Bathroom we had - could do with a little updating with decor and shower.
All 3 pools kept very clean and had wonderfully warm water.
Bars at 2 pools with excellent service - all inclusive was wonderful deal.
Food was excellent and great variety.
Excellent gym with good tuition on how to use machines. Also very good yoga sessions each morning at 8am.
Unfortunately never managed to make the nature walk at 7am
Problem areas were:
The 3 cats that roamed the Palm Restaurant - even though residents asked not to feed - they still did - if you are not a cat lover - this could be a big turn off.
Restaurant staff would do best to accommodate you at a table that cats would not bother you at.
Water sports available, but no supervision once you were out in Hobie, pedalo or kayak - so if a bit nervous of the sea - this could be a problem.
Bit disappointed with the spa facilities.
Other than that a lovely relaxing holiday - would return again.

All i can say is that we have travelled to most Caribbean Islands and this by far was the best. No only because we got married here but the Hotel made everything more special, such a beautiful setting. At arrival we stayed in a standard beachfront room which don't get me wrong was superb but then we were upgraded to the Sundown suite which was amazing. The staff are extremely friendly and went out of there way to help us. Cindy our wedding co-oridinator was the best, she made everything perfect for the special day. Starting from organising a speed boat trip for the boys the morning of the wedding (to keep them off the pop!), arranging/ordering the bouquet, flowers for in my hair, wedding cake (the caribbean fruit wedding cake is a must!) and organising wedding drinks in the Rock Cottage for the wedding party. All staff, especially reception staff who upgraded our parents to the Rock Cottage for the week of their stay were excellent. Rock Cottage is something out of this world!! The food was superb. Breakfast especially, great for the poorly head in the morning! I can't fault this hotel one bit. We are definately booking up for the anniversary and many more anniversaries after.

Ok there are a number of reviews that have various points about Blue Waters so here are some good pointers for you to consider if you are thinking about staying.
The hotel is situated on the north of the island. 15 mins taxi from both the Airport (11US$) and St Johns (10US$). The hotel itself is in a location that is not within walking distance of any sights.
As shown on the map the majorty of the rooms are classed as "Deluxe Beechfront" and all the details you will find say that the Beach Front rooms have a "Clear view of Beach or Sea". This is only true if you don't stay in Block 300 or part of block 200. These rooms have the gardens and trees outside the rooms. We originaly stayed in room 305. Room was a good size, everything you needed. We did have major problems with the A/C in the room not working. As the hotel is normally it is difficult to change rooms if issues occur.
We did change to room 105 on the last night, which was like checking into a different hotel. Rooms in this block were modern, clean and 1000% better if a little smaller.
We had booked the Bed & Breakfast option, but on arrival and checking out the menu decided to upgrade to all inclusive.
The prices (all less tax & service charge for comparison)
All inclusive surcharge is $180 per night per couple
Lunch will cost around $40 per couple + drinks
Dinner in the Palm Resturant is $39 for 2 courses $49 for 3 courses
Dinner in Vyviens is around $100+ for 3 courses
Drinks are $2 soft drinks, $4 beer & non alcholic cocktails
To be honest if you are not going to eat everything you can it is a tough call to choose to pay the extra or not. But on the all inclusive you do get a stocked mini bar. Dark Rum, Gin & Soft Drinks only!
Room service is included but you have to pay $5 delivery charge. Food in the Palms resturant is ok, Vyviens is top notch and menu changes twice weekly.
There is 1 main beach and another secluded beach which is rarly used due to distance from bars and is on the Atlantic side of the resort.
The 3 pools are well maintained and gives a good choice of tanning locations. The Pool bar is open all day and Beach bar only closes during lunch.
This hotel is not for anyone wanting any kind of life after the sun sets. There is a band stand where local bands take turn every night. All sounds pretty much the same after 2 or 3 nights.

In the defence of Blue Waters, the majority of the staff are great, friendly and want to make you feel welcome.
Our main problem was the breakdown of the A/C and a general lack of attention to small details (loose tapes, broken tiles) throughout the property.
DO TAKE MOSQUITO REPLANT, the rooms take so called nets over the doors but the mesh is too large and they just fly through.

We did raise all these points with the duty manager, but found it hard to believe that he was not aware of the huge diffence between blocks 2 & 3 from the other beach front blocks.

I am happy to supply futher photos or answer any questions.
This is a lovely setting shame about the details. 4 Star service with in a 3 star setting.
Hopefully this will change Sept 05 when closes for a refurbisment.
