travel to hotels around the world. On average I am in about 40 different hotels per year. I haven't been to many hotels more than once. I have rarely written reviews about hotels because my time is limited, but Blue Waters deserves the following review more than any hotel I have ever been to.

Chipped dishes. Same utensils per course.
Almost no one says "you're welcome" or acknowledges you.
Problems getting water. Fresh water is unavailable after 6PM... on the whole resort.. and the hotel strongly advise against drinking tap.
Order came out incorrect twice in one meal, then the waitress gave an attitude.
Canned vegetables are served, with the liquid from the can. They have no fresh vegetables.
Bathrooms are extremely dirty, stained, missing caulk- truck stop style (in your own room) DISGUSTING!
Feel random springs poking out of the mattress
Television channels are on and off frequently due to exposed and frayed wiring
Televisions are very small approx 18"
Sink was leaking to the point where majority of the towels were used to keep from flooding. Hotel staff placed extra towels on the ground when I asked for it to be fixed.
Air conditioner was leaking to the point where there was almost an accident (after requesting it to be fixed 6 times in three days)
There aren't more than seven beach umbrellas available on the whole beach.
Tons of mosquitoes in the rooms before we got in (BIG ONES)
Fat diseased looking cats roam freely around the dining areas
Welcome drink caused horrible stomach pains for a scary 15 min period for 6 adults.
Will not replace sink soap if requested (even though it was used before we checked in).
Handles for closing the windows were broken. So you couldn't open or close the blinds or windows- Screens were broken as well.
No beverage or food available after 10pm.
Decent wine list printed, with no wines available
Hotel told us that there is no taxi available after 10pm.
Manager stated that he called the taxi already - when we originally asked for him to call..When I asked for a taxi, the manager literally said " We already called the taxi for you sir" and hung up." 45 minutes and two calls later, the taxi was still not there.
After complaining about every problem we already encountered, he was able to get a taxi within 10minutes. The only problem was that the taxi had two locals already in it smoking pot. The manager insisted that is the best he could do.
Shower head knob broke during shower in two different rooms
Mixed drinks come out barely drinkable for 10 people.
Band on a nightly basis is consistently talentless and extremely irritating... I believe it was members of the kitchen staff.
The jacuzzi in the large suite was large but did not work at all. The pump for it was broken, hotel refused to fix it saying that they do not know how and don't know a repair man that can.
Made a reservation for a Friday night, they didn't tell us till we sat down that they will not be able to serve us dinner at the table, and only a buffet was available. Then they told us that nothing was available in the only alternative restaurant so don't bother trying.
The laser sailboat had a broken Rutter
Housekeeping staff is rude, pushy, and says rude comments under their breath as you pass - consistently for everyone in our party throughout our stay.
Hotel manager was incredibly rude and walked away in middle of conversation.
Hotel security said that a family member from the university of Antigua stayed three nights when he really
stayed one, and manager was not willing to refund money charged until a major argument erupted.

This hotel would have discouraged me from ever going back to Antigua... luckily I have had a great experience at Galley Bay Hotel in the past. I warn you that 99% of the hotel staff Ive meet at any hotel in Antigua has been slightly rude to tourists. I don't think they like us very much.

We stayed at Blue Waters for our honeymoon. Went in the rainy season (mid july) and rained for 1hr for the whole 10 days. Very sunny hot weather. We stayed in an air-contioned deluxe beach front room which was lovely. Felt like a normal room but had patio doors and balcony looking out to the sea. Could have gone for a standard which also seemed nice and most rooms probably have views of the sea here. The hotel wasn't up to Mr and Mrs Smith class but it was a really nice hotel and we had a fab time. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Beach amazing and loads of loungers, shade available and the staff bring you free water and drinks on the beach.

There are three restaurants at the hotel (Palms and Viviens in the resort grounds and The Cove 5min walk or free golf buggy ride). The food is mainly western - the Cove food is the best but it was so hot as no fans where most of the tables are. Viviens very good food too and a/c. Food is not caribbean - and you will find this in all the hotels. There are three cocktail bars - 2 by the pool which serve great cocktails. Hardly any kids in the resort - mostly couples which was nice. Bands came to play every other night which was good to listen too. There is a tennis court and gym at the hotel too. Hotel has hobbie cats and windsurfers (basic equipment).

One complaint is that when we checked out they had double charged us on tax and service. Everyone will need to watch out for this in Antigua as tax and service (10%) is added on seperately. Therefore when you order a cocktail to your room number they note the total amount (incl tax and service) then underneath added extra tax again onto the bill. Fortunately we noticed as did other guests and the money (almost £200!!) was refunded. Am sure wasn't intentional and computer glich but at every hotel would watch out for this.

We hired a car for a week and drove around the island. Nelson's Dockyard is a MUST. St. Johns is an experience as bit chaotic but depends what you like. The driving is horrendous - pot holes everywhere, no signs and people and goats walking in the middle of the road. So if you have guts go for it. Wouldn't recommend night time driving (i.e. going to restaurants far away from the resort - takes 45 mins to get to English Harbour)

Antigua has some poor areas but did not appear violent - despite what you hear in the news. The hotel has its own security staff as do most hotels. You just need to be a bit streetwise.

Northwest Antigua is best place to stay if you are into watersports - Jabberwock beach amazing wind for kite and windsurfing but no facilities. We heard Dickenson Bay was nice and good for windsurfing but was the worst place in the whole of Antigua for us - totally packed with resort holiday makers, no shade and got loads of hassle by locals trying to sell horse riding tours and goods.

We did the Ecotour (Adventure Antigua) this is an absolute must as was fantastic - cost US$100 each and they pick you from the hotel beach and you can go snorkelling, see the Pelicans, visit the caves of Bird Island and learn and hopefully see turtles.
We also did the Zip Lines (Anitgua Rain) really would not recommend this - the zip lines are good fun and challenge course is great for kids but most of the staff completely ruin the experience as they bark at you and have SO much attitude (zero customer service). Cost was US$85 and you need to drive or get a taxi there. Also went to Cedar Valley Golf Course - total cost for buggy, club hire and 18 holes (good course albeit fairly short) was US$200 for 2 people.

Also went diving US$110 (two-tank) from Jolly Harbour (again need to drive or get taxi). Went with Indigo Divers (PADI) who were amazing - very professional and don't take out huge groups which is good. While I was diving Jolly Dive turned up with 13 divers on board small boat - looked very cramped and same cost as mine- whereas I had 4 divers on my boat.

Hope you have as much fun as we did.

  • Liked — The beach and cocktails
  • Disliked — Decoration could have been higher standard - i.e. not plastic chairs, nicer lobby area.

Im afraid i have been spoiled rotten by this resort...but in a very, very good way!

We returned this summer and were welcomed by the ENTIRE staff like returning family. After a glitch at hermitage bay (my teens were a tad uncomfortable with the "romance" factor going on there), we returned totally by surprise and marina stepped us up to the rock cottage where we stayed last year....this was indeed a very nice touch! After a few phone calls, michael sent us on our way with us promising him we would return, sans children in the very near future and off we went to our beloved blue waters.

This resort is the ultimate in relaxation...very easy to do on the beautiful quiet beach or the many nooks located near any of the pools. The service is wonderful, the staff is friendly and courteous and the place just sparkles from top to bottom.

Evening entertainment is a really nice touch at this resort...each night a different band or singer or group...nothing wild or crazy and it was nice to sit and relax in the gorgeous surroundings after dinner.

The food is good enough, we enjoyed great morning meals and lunches, nice bbq and salad bar....nothing over the top, but good. We prefer to get out to some local restaurants and return later on to relax with the staff or fellow vacationers.

The rock cottage is just spectacular...set out on the jetty, comfortable with great bathrooms...important stuff....plenty of room to lay about in the sun. After having the absolute pleasure of staying there twice, i dont think i could tear myself away from that idyllic surrounding. Alrich and Vincia are the most graceous hosts of the rock cottage and were very happy to see us. This is what keeps us returning to antigua...the people.....plain and simple. OK, so it helps that the island has some of the most beautiful resorts i have ever stayed in, but the staff anywhere we have stayed have always made our experience that much more enjoyable.

The gals at the spa are great..had some nice treatments...people have complained about how simple the "spa" is.....i think its pretty charming, much like an old fashioned beauty parlor..it just adds to the whole experience. Even the gal at the souvienr hut remembered us and squeezed me like a tube of toothpaste!! really nice! My kids felt comfortable there, they are pretty much beach bums like us and are pretty content with hanging around the resort during the day...they did some prowling at night and we felt they were safe and sound for the most part.....they are at the age where they want to get out at night and we felt ok with letting them go.

The atmosphere at blue waters is soothing and relaxing..just the way we like it. We got out and about at night, met up with a friend i met on another website, great day at darkwood beach with a bbq and drinks....pure heaven, did some shopping in st. john's and of course did eli's xtreme powerboat tour....fabulous day out with a wonderful crew...its always nice to see jd and we had a blast with them!

I always say that there is something that just keeps me coming back to antigua...this was our fourth visit.....the answer is simple....the people who make us feel so very welcome...their pride shines and it is truly wonderful to be able go back again and again.

  • Liked — the staff and service, the beauty, the serenity and peacefullness :)
  • Disliked — cant think of a thing we didnt like!

If you want a romantic perfect wedding abroad Blue Waters is the place to have it. We chose this hotel after reading other reviews and we were not disappointed. We loved it because of the following: the hotel was not too big which made it more intimate, the rooms were clean, comfortable with fantastic views, the variety of food for all inclusive was very good, pools & grounds lovely, very few children, entertaiment was good (not every night in quiet season) weather fantastic, wedding setting perfect with personal wedding coordinator , only 3 weddings a week and most of the staff friendly. Lots of security felt very safe!

We were welcomed by staff with cold towels and drinks, bags taken to rooms (have small notes to tip the porter). We had afternoon tea (which we didn't have again because we eat so much for breakfast and lunch!) Local bottled water is free with all inclusive (not Evian)
We met the manager of the hotel Alistair who is English and very approachable who will do everything he can to make sure your stay is all you want it to be. So if you do have any problems see him.
Buy the OFF spray straight way, this will keep you from being bitten by the mosquito’s. Spray twice a day and last thing at night and you will be fine.
If your holiday is with Virgin you will get free passes to Shirley heights, but the down side to this is you go at 4 and leave at 7 but the real experience starts at 7 with the locals singing dancing etc.
For those of you getting married these are my tips:
Have your hair done at home take photos, have a hair trial and show them photos, Alicia did mine and it was very good. Do your own make up. My husband and I had a massage together under the wedding gazebo, amazing worth the money. When you meet your wedding coordinator be prepared to be there for at least an hour and have all your documents. We had a vanilla wedding cake, fantastic, I had a tropical bouquet but I did see a lovely pink and white roses pose, which was also beautiful. Remember it is really hot so think about this before choosing outfits! The photographer and video guy were very good be aware the video is running most of the time and photos take along time!! We had drinks and nibbles (free) pre-ordered back at our room in the Cove suites for our guests (15), which was great because dinner was at 7.30 so you are not hanging around. (We upgraded our room to the cove suite for our 2nd week).
We went on the 'Jabberwocky' trip, your own yacht for the day.; it was good but we wished we had gone in a larger group. The couple who own it are English and are very friendly. A bit expensive for what it was.

Only down side to the hotel is, some of the staff can be slow and not bothered (but tell Alistair he will sort it), we made friends with many of them, Pearl was amazing and looked after us really well.
Oh and please feed the black and white cat 'Felix' who appears every meal time, he is friendly.
We went for a romantic meal at Le Bistro, amazing food and staff great.
Take US Dollars.
Stock up your free mini bar and bring home all the rum etc, we did and had an Antigua night with our friendswhen we got back!!
We made lots of friends and loved every minute.
We booked through esures Nadine is very helpful and got us an amazing deal.
