“A Great Hotel for Relaxing”

Blue Waters

Mar 25, 2008

Great resort hotel set in an up market area of Antigua.
Made for relaxing with 3 pools, one adults only, another pool one depth only favored by people with children and the third 6ft max depth by the pelican bar. With three beaches there is plenty of room. We were there when the hotel was full. The hotel says no reserving beds by the pool or on the beach but in practice beds are still reserved by the guests. Has an internet service with two screens but with wireless connection this was very unreliable and kept cutting out. In 10 days stay only managed to sent 1 email. Cost is $5US for 30mins.

Food was very good. Main restaurant is the Palm for all those on all inclusive and as we were on the breakfast plan we had breakfast and dinner at the Palm. Breakfast buffet with eggs as you like cooked to order with usual UK and USA breakfast stuff. Lunchtime snacks are served by the beach bar and are reasonable. Draught Waldadli beer is $4US for about half litre. Cocktails about $8US. Wine 250ml glass is $5US. BUT all purchases have 10% service and 10.5% gov. tax added. Obviously if all inclusive you do not pay. Prices were cheaper than the UK and depending on how much you think you can consume, whether you go for the all inclusive or breakfast plan. You can change up to all inclusive when you are there at any time for $252US per day per couple. We never got near this figure so breakfast plan was right for us. We never went to the a’ la carte Vyviens restaurant as we were happy with the food at the palm. All inclusive will pay a supplement to eat there.

We stayed in a deluxe beachfront and it was a good size with great views. Room very clean and serviced with efficiency by the maids. Bed was 6ft wide with 6 pillows. A sheet and a duvet. Linen changed every 2 days. Ceiling fan and air con. with fridge and tea and coffee machine all replenished daily by the maids. The good size balcony had 2 comfy chairs and 1 sun lounger plus glass topped table with sun umbrella. Not overlooked in any way. Bathroom had 2 washbasins, bath with overhead shower with big shower head.
Turn down service each night with newsletter on the next days events and weather. Flat screen TV with BBC World and USA channels. Good room service menu with $5US delivery charge.

Lots of wildlife in the gardens with humming birds, pelicans, egrets and lots of fantastic flowers. The hotel runs a shuttle each day to St John’s at $8US per person each way. Leaves at 9.30am and leaves ST John’s at 12.30pm. Personal taxi to ST. John’s is $12US plus tip each way. A taxi to see the island is for 3.5 hours tour $110US plus tip. Taxi’s are based at the hotel so you can negotiate where to go and for how long and the price.

We enjoyed our stay, our 6th in Antigua but 1st at Blue Waters, and was impressed by the good service and the well motivated staff who looked happy as they all do in Antigua. The room was excellent and we enjoyed the food. The only down part was nothing to do with the hotel but the one hour it took to get through immigration at the airport and we were one of the first off the plane. Other guests arrived few days latter had a two hour wait to clear immigration. They need to sort this out as it is getting like American immigration.

My husband and I stayed at the Blue Waters Hotel for a pre-christmas chill out and loved every minute of it! We have recently also stayed in both St Lucia & Barbados and whilst the hotels we stayed in there (both part of the Almond gruop) were very good, the Blue Waters was something else!

We stayed in a delux beach front room which was excellent - very good size and very comfortable. There are 3 pools at the hotel all were fairly small but adequate for the number of people - the pool areas were never overcrowded. Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. The "extra touches" like the staff coming round with glasses of iced water every morning to all those round the pool, followed slightly later by chilled towels to cool you down and then by fresh fruit and later in the afternoon sorbet were much appreciated and felt very luxurious!

We chose to stay on a B&B basis and very much enjoyed going out into St John's and the surrounding areas to eat. We ate at the hotel restaurants just twice - both meals were OK, but we were pleased that we had chosen an option that allowed us to experience other places to eat. However I must recommend "The Cove" restaurant (which is part of the hotel, but would not be included in an All Inclusive package and whilst is in walking distance from the hotel, at night should be accessed by taxi costing approx $6US - which is a bit cheeky I felt!) - it was supurb! The design of the restaurant was remenissant of the Cliff restaurant in Barbados (perched on a cliff, overlooking the sea with flaming tourches etc!) however we felt the food was much better! Loved it so much we ate there twice during our 10 night stay. We were lucky enough to meet the cheff in person to compliment him on the food! Only dissapointment on the two occassions we ate there was that the ambience was not as it should have been as the flaming tourches were not lit, but the food and wine more than made up for it! Overall I would highly recommend the hotel and we are planning to go back again this December as relaxing just before Christmas was well worth it and this is a perfect place to do so!

“Perfect Honeymoon”

Blue Waters

We stayed at Blue Waters for two weeks at the end of Feb for our honeymoon and we loved every single minute of our stay. Our flight to Antigua was delayed by 3 hours so we were a little stressed when we finally arrived but after a rum punch and a cold towel, along with the stress free check in, we quickly relaxed. As we were on our honeymoon, we were given a free upgrade to a deluxe beachfront room which was beautiful, very spacious and always had a well stocked mini bar. I agree with other reviews that if you want the most uninterrupted views then request a room in the 100 block.

The beaches are small but they more than cater for the amount of guests, particularly with the decked area by the infinity pool, which is only a few feet from the beach, the pool and the bar. We noticed from earlier reviews a complaint about the location of the beach towel hut which is where the water sports are located and have to comment that this really was not a problem for us and took about 2 minutes out of our day.

The food was very good, some dishes are obviously better than others and there are a couple of supplements to pay at Vyviens for lobster, beef wellington etc ($20 US). Between the Palm restaurant and Vyviens, we loved the setting of the Palm and the food and service of Vyviens. We also tried the Cove a couple of times and that was excellent as well. We were all inclusive and to eat at the Cove you just pay $25 US each for a 2 course meal or $30 for 3, house wines are included in your all inclusive package but make sure you stipulate that you want the house wine.

There is entertainment at the Pelican Bar every night except Sunday. Most bands were pretty good and the one on a Wednesday night is sure to get everyone dancing! The cocktails are fantastic, some can be a little strong though (especially the Zombie)! We found the staff to be superb, some weren't as chatty as others but none were ever rude and they were all courteous.

We went on 2 boat trips while we were there and would recommend Eli's Eco Tour which was excellent. We also went on the Excellence Catamaran around the island which was a great day out. We would recommend the Excellence trip but try and make sure you do it on a day when the cruise ships are not in port as otherwise it can be extremely busy (Virgin sells this exclusively to Virgin travellers as the Virgin Ahoy trip).

We weren't sure which currency to take so took a mixture of $US and $EC but since the hotel only takes $US and everyone else seemed to take $US, we needn't have taken any $EC.

We found that a lot of guests were regulars which shows what a great hotel this is. Most guests were aged between 40 and 60 ish. We are in our late 20s so were among the youngest there which didn't matter to us but if you are a young couple that want somewhere lively then this probably isn't the place for you but if you want a couple of weeks of doing nothing except enjoying the food, cocktails and sunshine, then this is the hotel for you!

Overall we had a fantastic experience at Blue Waters and wouldn't hesitate going back.

This was our first visit to the Caribbean, so it's difficult for us to compare it to anything else in the Caribbean at it's standard. However, we found it very relaxing and friendly, with good amenities. Although the beaches were relatively small compared to other hotels in Antigua, the vegetation gave it an established feeling rather than a hotel dropped at the side of a open beach. The food was very good, with The Cove being our favourite (we did not go all inclusive, simply because we expected to dine mainly outside of the hotel, but we liked the food so much we only had three lunchtime meals outside of the hotel; one at Nelson's Dockyard and the others on boat trips).

We had a Deluxe Beachfront room which was maintained to a high standard. Only one issue arose; we requested bottled water for the fridge in our room and it didn't arrive; we phoned and was told that their records said it had. I insisted it didn't and on returning to the room later that evening I still found no water. When we rang this time, a different person answered and within 5 minutes it had arrived. Great, but it happened the second night too, so we didn't order anymore. Overall, the staff were friendly and did a good job.

This is an ideal location for couples, although there were a number of families with smaller children who seemed very happy with the hotel. I understand that many people return year on year, and I'm not surprised (although we prefer to visit new destinations, so we'll be looking to visit another island in the Caribbean again in the near future).

“Wonderful Holiday”

Blue Waters

Mar 4, 2008

We spent one week in St. Lucia and the second week in Blue Waters in Antigua. The first week was lovely, the second week wonderful.

Blue Waters is is beautiful Hotel in a lovely location. There is plenty of space, three pools, three small beaches and safe swimming.

We had a Deluxe beachfront room which was wonderful, we were in the "700" block which is the newest, apart from the "Cove". We booked all Inclusive which is by far the best deal. A dinner is $55 + 10% service and 10% tax pp. Most people we spoke to who had booked B+B changed their meal plans after one night!

There are three restaurants. The main one being the Palm restaurant. Breakfast, Lunch, Tea and Dinner are served here. We thought that the Palm would be a buffet at night and the first night booked Vyviens - mistake - this was nowhere near as good as the Palms, which is Table D`hote most nights and the food is fantastic. The cocktails were also wonderful.

The staff are all great people and always full of fun, whilst being efficient.

I cannot find anything that was not excellent about this resort. The other guests were all like minded people and the average age was 50`s. Everyone looked smart at night ,which always makes it feel special. If, at the end of the day, you like to shower, dress up and go to a good restaurant, this is the place for you. The entertainment was good most nights with the staff joining in the dancing on a Wednesday was great fun.

The Hotel was permanently full whilst we were there, and most people seemed to have been there before which is always a good sign. - We will definately be returning!

Antigua is a great place to get about by car, though expect to get lost! We have been to the Island twice before and never ever felt threatened as we have on some other islands. Lots of wonderful beaches to vist - Half Moon Bay being our favourite - you have 365 to choose from - get a car and go out you will have a great time!
