“Not Really Grand...But Relaxing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2004

I just spent 8 days at the Pineapple Resort. When we first arrived my husband and I were really not impressed at all. The lobby was the cheasiet I have ever seen! We stayed in a garden view room, which was very disappointing. The rooms are very dark and run down. After 2 hours we were really considering going to check in to the Sandals, but decided to give the Pineapple a chance. Once we spent a full day at this resort we came up with a few good points.........
1. The beach is absolutely wonderful. One of the best I've ever seen.
2. The atmosphere at the resort is very laid back and relaxing.
3. It wasn't an over crowded resort, which is what we wanted.
4. The food was a little better than expected after reading some comments.

Not so good points........
1. The resort as a whole desperately needs remodeling. it is verrrrrry run down.
2. The service at the snack bar was the worst. It's like we were bothering the workers every time we asked for something. I really wanted to say to them "HELLO this is your job and we are paying for your salary! Lighten up!" I didn't really appreciate feeling like I was bothering someone to get me a hot dog every once in awhile. This to me puts a real damper on any resort.
3. Nightly entertainment could use some spicing up.
4. There was no drink service on the beach.
5. The pools were rather small.
6. Definitely over priced for what it is worth.

I am comparing this resort based on the ones I have already stayed at which are: Sheraton - Bahamas, Sandals Royal Carribean - Jaimaca (EXCELLENT), Occidental Grand Flamenco - Punta Cana (which was great by the way). Grand Fiesta - Riviera Maya, Mexico.

In the end, what my husband and I were looking for was relaxtion which is about the only great thing at this place! I would return to Antigua in a heartbeat, but not Grand Pienapple.

We stayed at this hotel and for the most part it was just okay. The hotel is a bit tired, lights hanging out of steps, ants in rooms and decor in rooms etc. The beach is stunning and the grounds are gorgeous. We met some locals who said that the Pineapple has one of the best beaches.

The food is really average; you pay a real premium for a mediocre product, that’s all I can really say about the food. I would be interested to know if any one else thought that the vegys tasted like washing up liquid??? If you want a particular type of cocktail you must tell them how to make it, otherwise they will get it wrong. Once they have learnt your preference they are pretty good at repeating the order. If you don’t like their "locally produced alcohol", just have a word in the management’s ear and you will find that they have all the normal brand names hidden away.
The staff for the most part are really a nice bunch of people. Their were a couple of exceptions who were miserable as sin, everything was an effort for them. One tall lady behind the bar was the worst for this.
WHEN YOU LEAVE, don’t be ripped off on your last day by asking the person checking you out for an extended checkout time of your room. They will try to get $50 out of you. Kick up a merry stink until they let you off the charge. They will come up with every excuse under the sun to try and get the money out of you, again just politely ask for the manager who will want to get rid of you ASAP. The best advice I can give you is to go to reception 2/3 days before your departure and warn them that your flight leaves in the evening and that you will need your room until late afternoon. They can do it easily if you give them notice, don’t be scammed out of your cash for this little trick. It left me with a nasty taste after what was a pleasant trip. If you go don’t expect it to be 4.5 star rating as advertised, the facilities, food and staff make it more of a three star hotel. Saying all of that a holiday is what you make of it, so just enjoy yourself.

This is definitely a couples resort. Maybe saw 3 or 4 families. It worked out great for my boyfriend and I, just doesn't seem like a family place. The ocean and the beach were amazing. The staff at the Pineapple was extremely nice. Seemed to have an odd shortage on beach towels, but that didn't ruin the fun. Learned how to scuba dive with Carlo- if you have patience this guy is great. But don't expect the pampered treatment like you'd get from a big dive shop. It was a good first dive for me.

The hotel itself was exactly what we were looking for. Didn't want the big, flashy casino or guys on golf carts. Very relaxing and quaint.

Read reviews before we went and agree that the Outhouse is great. Mary's ribs are the outstanding.

Rent a car if you can. We felt a little cooped up and wanted to leave the resort. Really cool to see the entire island in a day. Definitely go to the English Harbor on Sunday night. Fun party! Do the windshield wipa!

Just returned from Antigua after a wonderful two week holiday with our two young children.

Good Points:

Beach is Fantastic and the sea is pretty safe for young children. It is clean although there is a small patch where glass is washed ashore from 'booze cruises'. No jet-ski's up and down all day (although you can get them if you wish) and no pushy vendors. There is a clearly defined swimming area.

Service is excellent. If you treat the staff with respect then they look after you. If you treat them badly you will spend a lot of time waiting. The hotel cannot do enough for you - we asked for the toilet to be mended and the satellite on the tv to be adjusted and it was done within hrs!! I dislocated my toe and the doctor was there within the hour. When the glass on the beach was pointed out the hotel had people cleaning the beach within an hour!!! No complaints at all. Above all our young children (2+3)were treated as adults which in our experience is unusual.

Facilities - Almost everything you could want is catered for. They will provide food if you wish to feed children in your room, there are beach games etc every day, they provide frisbees, board games etc on request. Our children even got a tennis lesson!!!

Gardens - Gargens are well kept and Mary's outhouse is a must. Ribs and Chicken, sipping cold beer watching the pelicans is a great experience.

Ok Points:

Food was consistently average or good but never exceptional. The lack of quality seafood was both surprising and disappointing. Sometimes food arrived at the table cold but no problem to send it back.

Rooms were basic and could do with some updating although they were always clean. Ground Floor rooms can get a little damp and there is no insullation from the rooms above. But if you are on the top floor you get woken up by the rain!!!

Bad Points:

Minor points really. You can only have one beach towel per person per day. With young children extra towels would be helpful. A restaurant that served adults only at least after a certain time would be good. The Pineapple grill was disappointing. Food Ok but if you want no smoking you are put in the side of the restaurant with no atmosphere and loads of kids who are up and down from their tables at every opportunity!! Selection of goods in the gift shop is disappointing - no suntan cream with a factor > 10 which even the adults need. Doesn't really cater for teenage children who could do with a place they can go in the evenings. They are not allowed in the games room without an adult.

Conclusion - This is not a luxury resort so don't go expecting it!!! Everything it does is 7 or 8 out of 10 which in my book is unusual and puts it ahead of many 'fancier' resorts in my book. The resort is crammed full with returning guests which is always a good sign. If you want a beach holiday where you can forget your worries then the Pineapple is hard to beat. We'll be back next year!!!

We just got back from 9 wonderful days at the Pineapple, our first visit to the Caribbean and Antigua. We are a teenage family.

What we liked:
- Beautiful spacious beach, great snorkelling and hobie cat sailing.
- Spacious relaxing resort, plenty of sun loungers in all locations
- 4 good tennis courts not much used
- Attractive colonial style architecture and gardens
- Friendly local staff (thanks for the volley ball Julie it was great fun)
- Genuinely all inclusive
- Food better than we expected for an all inclusive

Improvement points:
- beach towel service
- main entrance to the resort doesn't do justice to how good it is
- entertainment was of good quality but could be better located in the restaurant area as it happens quite early.
- some encouragement from staff for teenagers to get together in the evening would have gone down well as they prefer their own company but are not good at making it happen on their own.

Other points to note:
- 50% of visitors seemed to be couples
- nothing organised for kids and relatively few families with young children as a result
- no local night scene (but probably the same all over Antigua) and resort night life is low key.

All in all one of our best holidays , excellent value and would not hesitate to recommend it.

We spent a week at the Pinapple with our two children (9 and 12) and loved it. We all needed to get away and just relax. The beaches and grounds were beautiful. Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff was wonderful, very friendly and helpful. There was a slight problem with getting towels - they clean your room in the morning, take the towels, wash them, and bring fresh towels back later in the day. I would suggest packing a couple of bath towels just in case. (Although most days towels were there when we needed them.) We had no complaints about the food though two of the restaurants do not change the menu so there is not much variety particularly at lunch. Still whatever we ordered was good. We never left the hotel grounds. As I said we were looking for a nice place to go and just relax and this was perfect.

My partner and I have just come back from a weeks holiday in the Occidental Pineapple hotel in beautiful Antigua and we thought that it was great. It was our first trip to the Caribbean and we will definitely be going back there and we would stay in the same hotel.

We were quite dubious after having read the hotel reviews on this page, especially as we had a complete disaster with an all inclusive the year before in Cyprus (it was awful), but the hotel, the food, the hotel employees, everything was fantastic.

The hotel employees were so friendly and helpful and relaxed, not lazy. It has always been our experience that if you are pleasant to people, then they are pleasant back. We were embarrassed by how rude some people were to the staff, but they were always so polite and helpful back. The food was great, we never had a problem with anything and Mary's outhouse was a regular for us with her great chicken and ribs in the afternoon.

We were delayed by 24 hours going out there and then the weather was terrible for our first two days, but it was still the best holiday we have ever been on and we have been on a few. The gardens were beautiful, the standard room we stayed in was perfect for us and as for the hotel needing a bit of maintenance, well maybe it did but we were too busy looking at the beauty around us. We did have a bit of a mark on the bathroom mirror but it didn't bother us. The hotel was clean, well maintained, had good activities in the day and my partner did his first dive with Carlos, who was excellent.

We highly recommend this hotel. If you want a relaxing holiday where you can eat and drink well, then don't hesitate to go the the Occidental on the most beautiful beach in Antigua.
