Having stayed in other 3 star caribbean hotels, you never know what to expect, but this was a real treat....

Location: Short 10 minute taxi ride ($14) from St. Johns. Set on its own beach - no passing visitors so you felt safe and free from hassle.

Accomodation: About 35 sea facing rooms. Clean and spacious. Air conditioning was fine and ceiling fan would suffice most of the time. The ground floor room did NOT get hot. Room included a safe and a good fridge. 15 metres to the sea!

Food: The a la carte food for dinner was top notch - easily 5 star standard. The best I've ever had in any holiday hotel. Breakfast and lunch were less impressive, but the standard was still good; as this is a small hotel, the last people to these two meals had less choice, so get their early if you're fussy. We weren't.

Service: All requests were sorted quickly. Friendly but not Over The Top. Just relaxed and helpful.

Beach & Pool: The pool is small - good for a dip but not a serious swin. The sea on the other hand can be rough. And on the rough days narrowed the available space on the beach. However, there are plenty of beds and fixed umbrellas.

Activities: None to really mention. Make your own entertainment. So you get what you expect. Not a family resort.

Top tip: Take your sandfly/mozi repellents and use them!

Summary: Great place for a quite break. All inclusive good value. I recommend the hotel.

  • Liked — The dinner restaurant
  • Disliked — Small swimming pool - sea rough for 'easy' swimming

My husband and I had stayed at the Coconut Beach Club in June of 06.
The water on the beach was very clean and there was never alot of people on the beach.
The food is not bad - BUT - It definitely could be alot better.

  • Liked — The great oceanview room that we had
  • Disliked — The Food
  • Tips/Secrets: — Do not expect great food. Bring lot of mosquito spray.

Can't believe this place is getting such good reviews. Myself and my boyfriend have just returned from a very disappointing stay at the Coconut Beach Club. There was no professionalism here and contrary to the other reviews, everything seemed a great effort when we asked for assistance. I did enjoy the evening meals but the breakfast/day buffet wasn't very appealing and had I stayed for 14 nights would have eaten out a great deal. We were eaten alive by mosquitos caused by the dampness and the marsh/lagoon at the back of the hotel. Apparently a lot of the other hotels spray the resort in order to keep mosquitos under control but not so here. Apparently this used to be a great little hotel but the manager has left and not been replaced and it's on it's way downhill. On our way home to the airport, our cab driver (who was a life saver getting us out and about the island) said the hotel COULD be nice if it were well managed! Pretty much says it all!

  • Liked — Ok rooms.
  • Disliked — Everything else.

The Coconut Beach is a very small and intimate hotel, not for those who like 5 star luxury but for those who want a quiet holiday with a great beach literally on the doorstep.

I find the comments about the staff being unfriendly in some of the reviews totally opposite to how they were or how we found them, but then some people are never satisfied and have an attitude themselves!

The island itself is not how I expected although we spent a week and never moved from the resort( there wasn't an awful lot to do) but then we wanted a week of total relaxaxtion which is exactly what we got.

Food was great and Neil the Restaurant Manager was very good and eager to please, he was always interested in how you rated the food and service.
Jahilda and Bernadette were great as well with nothing too much trouble. Jahilda even brought in some Milo(ovaltine/hot chocolate) from home for my daughter in the morning, now that's service.

Overall a great holiday but just remember you are in the Caribbean and you need to chill out to their rythm man!

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a 10 nt stay here and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff here are really helpful and friendly, especially Neil, Bernadette and Zauda who will create any cocktail you want or maybe just make up something specially for you. The food is the best I've tasted in an all inclusive resort. As the hotel is small they can prepare your food to order instead of the common buffet style you often get elsewhere. There was always a choice of 3 starters, main courses and a selection of desserts. The fish dishes are particularly tasty especially the catfish and wahoo. For those a little less adventurous there was also a pasta dish to choose. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the hammock on each balcony was a nice touch. The beach is only a few steps from the rooms and was mostly for hotel guests only and the wild horses who appeared regularly. The location of the hotel is a little remote but the hotel has a taxi service which offers a daily service into St Johns for $10 pp return. Just make sure you don't choose to go in on a day when there's a cruise ship is in port. The only negative wih the holiday was the amount of mosquito bites we picked up, but that seemed to be a common problem everywhere, so make sure you take plenty of sprays etc with you.

  • Liked — Secluded beach within a few steps and the fantastic food.
  • Disliked — Prone to mosquitoes
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't miss Shirley Heights and Nelson's Dockyard
