We stayed at the Coconut Beach Club for 2 weeks in June 2007 and had a wonderful time. We were a little apprehensive about how dated the resort would be, but we needn't have worried. The aim was total relaxation (we were definitely attracted by the lack of TV in the rooms, and we didn't miss TV once - it was a blessing to be without it!) and it was definitely mission accomplished - the relaxing tonic we needed.
Accommodation: we had a ground floor standard room, which was ideal as we woke up about 10 paces from the beach and were within easy reach of the bar too! The room was clean and fresh with excellent air con. I remember reading lots of reviews about grey towels, but let me assure you the towels were peach and very fluffy, and were changed every day. The only slight criticism I'd have regarding the rooms is that the bathrooms are a bit dated - they're clean, but slightly discoloured from use, and in a 1990s kind of style. I did mention this to the manager while we were there over the weekly cocktail party, and I think it speaks volumes of the resort that they were actively seeking out feedback from guests so they can improve.
Food: we were absolutely blown away by the variety and standard of the food. Being all inclusive, you sometimes expect it to be little more than a feeding trough at each meal, but dinner was a la carte with waiter service and heaps of choice. In the 2 weeks we were there there was no repetition at dinner. In fact, dinner was our favourite meal of the day as it felt so civilised to be sat dining in the restaurant, set around the pool, and not swarming round a buffet. Breakfast and lunch were buffet style, but because the hotel is quite small (another big plus for us - we hate sprawling resorts) the food was fresh and varied, and there was no scrummage for the buffet! Once a week they had a BBQ lunch which was beautiful, and there was always a chef on hand to cook the dish of the day fresh for you, in addition to the buffet food. Another big plus - loads of fresh hot tea at breakfast, on demand! Definitely 5* for food.
Facilities: as I mentioned, the hotel has approx 40 rooms (from what I recall!), and the beach was enormous, so there was loads of space and plenty of sun beds for all. This was a huge relief as we were often late up and always found plenty of sun beds and/or shade if required. The beach was gorgeous (see photos) and walking to the opposite end of the beach really felt like getting away from it all, if you needed to! There was a small internet room which was reasonably priced - only the one computer, but there was no queuing and generally people were restrained in their use of the internet as the aim was to chill out. Unfortunately (for me anyway!) Blackberries get excellent reception so I was always connected.
You can book tours through the hotel tour desk, or direct with a lovely man (whose name escapes me) on the beach - they didn't hassle you at all to go on trips, so no worries there, but were happy to share the benefit of their knowledge and recommend trips to suit. We took the shuttle to St John's a couple of days, which worked out good value if there were 4 people or more; and we also did a mini cruise on the Caribbean side of the island, with snorkelling off Cades Reef, and a mid-afternoon BBQ at one of the many uninhabited beaches on the Caribbean side of the island. We would highly recommend this trip - the sea was nice and calm (the atlantic side was a bit more choppy at that time of year!) and the people were so welcoming that it felt like a nice boat trip with friends than an organised tour.
Perhaps the thing that stood out most about this resort compared with others we've visited was how friendly it felt, and what wonderful people we met while there - a large proportion were return visitors which is the highest recommendation of the resort you can get. This is not to say that is was cabin feverish, or that the people were nosy - you could happily keep to yourself if you wanted, but there was always excellent company at the bar for example if you wanted to socialise of an evening.
The staff, with the exception of one especially sullen lady who ran breakfast, were helpful and pleasant. Special mention to Zauda, who makes the most wonderful cocktails and was beloved by everyone - a lovely, charming lady with a wicked sense of humour, she made the holiday memorable for all the right reasons.
A few recommendations: do check out the beach near the Grand Antiguan, which is about 10-15 mins' walk from Coconut Beach. This was more sheltered and mostly absolutely deserted - we went over if we fancied a walk or change of scene. Also, climb Fort Barrington for excellent views across the headland to St John's!
Word of caution: there were quite a few jellyfish around in both the beaches I mentioned, so I tended to stick to the pool; or watch my feet like a hawk when paddling in the sea! A couple of people were stung, but said it was more like a nettle sting than anything more serious. This may have been something to do with the tides, or the time of year, but just be vigilant. Don't let this put you off an otherwise excellent resort, fantastic value for money. We would definitely return :)
