We stayed at Colonna over New Year 2007/08
Also booked an additional week with Sunsail on Flotilla from Tortola on BVI

At Colonna - Sunsail do what they do well.
They provide sailing & instruction, in well maintained small dingies, hobies & windsurfing ect - EXCELLENT
Your beach team were great, instruction & service second to none

Over the last 5 years we have been loyal customers to Sunsail, staying at Galini, Perili & lastly Phokai, enjoying many sailing holidays however Colonna was a let down.

To date this has been the most expensive Sunsail holiday. Obviously in high season, we paid top dollar for poor accommodation - even with the dollar being so low !!

The established gardens were lovely - pity the hotel was not as well maintained !!
Colonna is in desperate need of a complete overhaul.
This is happening this year, however we obviously had to pay for it in advance !!

At new year there must have been at least 280 guests, being that time of year, many were very young families.

However you have to cater for all your paying guests - unfortunately there was no escaping, no quiet spaces to read or have a quiet drink.
There is only 1 x central bar area, in the middle of the dining area where everyone is herded too
Quiet, fine dining was simply not on offer @ Colonna - it was very noisy - more like school dinners !!

Food was OK - but basic

Larger boats - were older and in need of a refurbishment, however were available for an additional cost of approx £120 per day.
You have to make a 30 minute expensive taxi ride to the east of antigua to Jolly harbour
Advice : hire a car - its cheaper and it can also be used to explore the rest of the island.
English harbour on the South side is lovely & well worth a visit, its approx 45 minute taxi ride.

We expected more of Antigua - more infrastructure.
Antigua is a lovely island but very expensive for what they have on offer. The only development was in the expensive resorts.

Diving was important to us & part of our holiday and was supposed to be @ Colonna - it was not.
We had to organise this seperately @ Jolly harbour - expensive & not well organised
Diving COULD be great, with plenty of fish

We would recommend Kite surfing @ Jabberwocky beach - independent from Sunsail, we organised this ourselves - which was excellent - but do book in advance

BVI - was wonderful, easy sailing, between the islands - well worth a visit - but BVI is very expensive - in spite of the low dollar and very busy!!
As for the connections & transfers to & from Antigua - stamina & patience is required

As a family we were really looking forward to this holiday, but the quality of the resort & accommodation was extremely disappointing & simply not worth that kind of money.

Sunsail - I honestly think the resort is too small & too confined, too offer the same activities you provide in your other resorts.

Perhaps at Colonna, less would be better ?
Concentrate more on quality rather than quantity !!

Sorry Sunsail - Colonna, was a real disappointment.
With the dollar so low - it was very expensive with low standards
We could not recommend Colonna at this time.

The club location is amazing only a 10 minute transfer from the airport which is nice and easy.

On arrival i was very much welcomed by the local staff, who all seemed happy and were willing to Help.

The food was fantasic with different dishes every evening, lunch bar snacks menu was very good too and at resonable price. Rum punch is great you must try it! i would fully recommend attending Punch Party on The Monday Night of your Hoilday it is a great way to meet other hoilday makers, and punch is free! The band is fantasic and stay till around 11-11.30pm and they also have enterainers that evening, the BBQ is exeptionally good.

Entertainment is held, nearly everynight they have magicians and mainly bands playing all sorts of music such as caribbean and jazz.

All local and UK staff are very friendly and welcoming, there fun and are allways on hand.

The spa is lovely and the facilites are fantastic the therapist(Alison) is amazing, her hands are touched by an angel! would reccommend to have a Facial or Aloe Vera wrap at the club!!!

The fitness classes are fantastic thanks to Owain.

There were very nice places to see outside the club and would reccommend if you go all the Way to Antigua is to go and have look!! English Harbour, Sting Ray City and St Johns find out more when your at the club there are some amazing places to see and do and they are not to be missed!

I would like to thank Colin and Martin, management team for a great stay at Sunsail Club Colonna and will see you all at Club Javlin next year 2008!!!

The hotel/club needs to be viewed in the context of the fact that the place is being closed next summer for a re-furb, which it needs. Hence the finish, fixtures and fittings in the rooms are tired.

As for the location, it is only 5-10 mins from the airport which is great for getting there quickly yet thankfully the resort does not suffer from aircraft noise.

There are two beaches, one for lounging/swimming, the other for exit/entry for the dinghys, and both are not much more than 40 yds in length, although there are two man made sandy peninsulas which are the main lounging areas, in addition to the pool area. Overall the outside lounging areas are fine, if a little cramped beachwise. The gym/spa area is pretty good, being more modern. The number of hobies, dinghys etc was fine, the beach staff good and lots of wind. We found the sailing side of things to be very good.

The food was pretty average, although with a mass catering buffet style you can expect little else at Sunsail prices. If you go with mediocre expectations you might be pleasantly surprised. The meats tended to be over-cooked which is a shame, but perhaps this is to err on the side of safety, hygiene-wise. Salads fine, if a bit dull.

You get a good mix of guests at these sorts of places and everyone was friendly and out for a good time.

As for the staff. Firstly, the locally recruited guys and girls are lovely and efficient. However the UK staff are very mixed. For the most part the female sailing staff were efficient, polite, and well presented. However, the male staff let the place down big time. On our first afternoon there was some drunk guy at the bar who the barman was clearly regarding as something of a nuisance. We thought it kind of weird that someone should be in such a bad way at 3 pm so imagine our surprise when he introduced himself to my husband as one of the sailing instructors! This was very much the theme for the male staff. If dribbling drunks leering over female guests is your bag then the Sunsail evenings will be a joy, but I found it actually quite unpleasant and rather insulting. On more than one occasion some staff were drunk in the restuarant before dinner! There appeared to be no senior management around to control what in effect were people who would be thrown out of any normal bar. The fact that they actually worked at the hotel should not have absolved them of decent behaviour. Hubby got quite angry at one stage and we weren't the only people annoyed by it. To be fair they were pretty much kids who must have taken a wrong turn at Faliraki, but First Choice needs to get a grip.

Anyway, once the place gets a refurb, tweeks the buffet quality up by 10%, and gets some decent local management then it'll be worth going to again. In fact it's all pretty easy to fix so don't be put off going later next year, but best wait till then.

Hi there
Thanks for your review and we will take note of your points and action them. Unfortunately a re-furb will not replace our staff. We have already acted upon your point with regard to the incident you mentioned.

Our HR process is lengthy and all of the UK staff (and a high% of the locals) are all RYA qualified instructors who have chosen this to be there career. Not that this justifies the situation you experienced I would like to reassure you that this is a rarity than as opposed to the norm

Falaraki we aren't and I take this gesture in best taste.

Your comments will be highlighted to all on the management team and perhaps we will see you back here after the re-furb.

I arrived at the airport at 11:00pm. Cleared customs, got my baggage and took a taxi to the hotel. I was checked in to Room 121 and the young lady led me to the room. She opened the door and then declared that somebody was occupying the room. With that, she opened 122 and put me in there. I wanted to phone my wife as I always do on arrival. The card by the phone said dial *6811. Ha! Good luck. It never worked. I went back to the front desk for help. It was after midnight and the young lady had gone. The security guard was very helpful, suggested I go back to my room, dial 0, he would answer and then connect me to the international operator.

Back to my room, but I could not get in. I had a key for 121. Back to the front desk. He had to call somebody down to make a new key for me. Back to the room. He tried many times but could not get an international operator. I asked him to quit, I have to sleep so I never did call my wife.

After five days they wanted me to move me to another room. No problem, I had been warned this might happen. I was moved to 123, the identical room next door. So what was the point of that? The phone in that room was haunted. Every two minutes it would ring once but there was nobody there - just the dial tone. I pulled the plug in order to get some sleep.

“Sailing was terrific”

Sunsail Club Colonna

Nov 16, 2007

The sailing was terrific, pool was huge and staff were incredibly nice and helpful. A little more variety in the salads and olive oil would have been nice, but still overall it was quite good. Unfortunately we won't be going back to Antigua again though due to the recent expropriation of a significant piece of land and resort there by the Antiguan government. Investors in Antigua beware.
