We stayed at this hotel on the basis of previous reviews. We were greeted by friendly faces and a rum punch which was very welcome after our long flight! Our hotel room, although slightly dated in places, was lovely and always clean. We paid extra for a beach front room which we felt was well worth it (although some superior rooms looked fine). We also went all inclusive which proved to be fantastic value and most convenient. Some other guests who were staying there on a room only basis decided to upgrade to all inclusive when they got there because they found it too expensive otherwise. The food was plentiful, varied and delicious.
The staff may come across as 'being nice because they have to' but if you make an effort to call them by their name and make light conversation, they are the nicest staff you could wish to meet. The bartenders, Trevor, Errol, Marlon and Marvin were all stars and the waiting staff, Ursula, Shenette, Natasha, Ronis to name a few were always willing to take that one step further to make our stay as special as possible. The staff on the front desk were also very polite.
We would recommend using the safe at the hotel as this is the most secure system that we have come across and there were never any problems accessing it at reception.
Your travel rep. may tell you to get taxis everywhere but we found the bus to be just fine. It cost about 60p each way to St Johns and the stop is just outside the hotel to the left. The locals who use the bus are very friendly and you get to experience a bit more of island life. However, be aware that the bus only leaves St Johns when it is full (we waited 40 min. and so make sure you take lots of water!). We wanted to go to the English Harbour but a taxi would have cost £40 round trip. We decided to go on a day trip (booked through Joseph on the beach) which took in pretty much the whole island, including the harbour, for about £33 each. We also booked horse riding through Joseph which cost about £23 each which was brilliant value.
We took EC Dollars with us but found that in fact US Dollars were widely accepted and generally seemed to represent better value. Also our rep advised that Sterling could be exchanged for a very favourable rate at the bank in St John's.
Snorkelling by the rocks is a must and is free for all inclusive guests. Be aware that whilst cruise ships dock at St John's, a few day trippers from such ships do drop by on Thursdays and Fridays. However, they did not invade the hotel and the beach is effectively segregated by the beach stalls. One tip is to ensure that you wear insect repellent in the day as we were left a little bitten from the sand flies.
You may notice two stray cats and a stray dog at meal times; please feed them for us! There were also a few birds around at breakfast who will take your crumbs from nearby. Occasionally you may see a cow or two (yes, a cow!) on the beach. If you walk over the hill to the left hand side of the beach, you can spot pelicans diving into the sea for fish together with another, smaller beach.
Overall, this was one of the friendliest islands and resorts we have been to and would not hesitate to return. The golden beach and crystal waters on which our hotel was located were beautiful and we will be returning next year.
