I have just returned my two week break and stayed at the Blue Heron. After leaving VC Bird airport, the closer I got to the hotel, I though wow, it's really in the county, but a few known resorts are also in the area like Carlisle Bay, Coco Bay, Jolly Beach etc so didn't feel too bad.
Upon arrival first impressions aren't so bad, it's on a sizeable plot of land and doesn't appear grubby, just slightly old. They give you a rum punch and then you are shown to your room by Security.
DONT BOOK A STANDARD ROOM. We upgraded to a Superior after reading advice on Trip Advisor (I wish I upgraded further). The room was pretty much average (it's def. a 3*). One annoying thing was the rim around one of the lampshades was so rotten it kept dropping rust on the bedside table. The beds are made daily (I made up my own bed a lot of the days) and towels are changed every morning.
Breakfast: God help you if you don't like eggs! On the menu they only serve Eggs Benedict, Fried Egg, Poached Egg, Omlette, Boiled Egg, baby sausages and crispy bacon, pancakes and french toast. We got wind that on a Sunday you can get a special West Indian breakfast (they make it for the staff, but guests can share it) so what we did was ask if they had any specials in the kitchen each morning. Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't.
Every day we would ask for fried dumplins and fried saltfish for the following day, and we usually got it. Toward the end of our stay we bought some Plaintain and asked the kitchen to fry it for us.
Oh at the breakfast buffet you have two choices of dainishes, local cornflakes/rice crispies, concentrated juice and two choices of yoghurt.
Oh yes, birds do fly in the restaurant for breakfast. They perch on chair tops or stand on your table waiting for bread/muffins. They are so cheeky they even lift up the cloths on the bread basket and help themselves!
The lunch menu is better and has a wider selection.
Dinner isn't the best but it's satisfactory and on a weekly rotation. So if you stay for two weeks you get each dish twice. I went all inclusive but still went out to eat on a few ocassions.
On a Tuesday evening they have a barbeque and steel band which starts at 7pm. Get in quick as the food runs out quickly.
Drinks are not strong, we went out for drinks in the evening as the hotel stuff was pretty poor. They do not have a large drink selection.
The pool is small compared to most hotels, but when we stayed there, there were no more than two people in it at any one time, and besides the beach is just a footstep from the hotel decking so a lot of people swam in the sea. (on a clear day, it's true you can see Monserratt and St. Kitts - didn't see St. Kitts myself)
The beach is great too, one of the better beaches on the island I'm told.
Generally staff are not overly friendly, but there a few ones mind. You have to put yourself out and it's in your own interest to do so, as you will get a better service. Patricia in the Restaurant/Beverage department is great, she will make your stay more pleasureable.
We were at the hotel when turtles were hatching - the hotel isn't bothered about it and keep the lights on which means a lot of them go the wrong way and not the direction of the sea. If you catch the turtles hatching when you go, please collect them and take them to the sea otherwise they die walking the wrong way.
For info, Jolly Beach resort five minutes away and is about 3EC Dollars on the local 22 bus and stops right outside Blue Heron. you can eat out, change money, go to the Casino and see the Harbour.
To end, I would advise spending a bit more money on a better hotel.
