Have just returned from a week's holiday at the Blue Heron with my husband and eight year old daughter. In common with some of the other reviewers we all found it wonderful. We had a beach front room which overlooked the turquoise sea and vast, uncrowded glorious beach. The hotel is small and charming. On arrival its simplicity strikes you. A small reception and bar area and an intimate restaurant. The pool is small but clean and great for youngsters as it is only four foot deep. Around the pool area are loungers and the beach bar. Two steps away is the beach which is breathtaking; great for children again with a sloping and quite gentle sandy entry into the sea. Food fine. Particularly the breakfast and some of the local dishes - fish, stews etc. Staff extremely pleasant and very hard working (an A* going to Duane). Evening entertainment kept simple and local. Particularly enjoyed Slinger the Swingers calypsos - you can ask him to come up with a special calypso just for you. Simple rooms were kept spotlessly clean and contrary to some reviews the air conditioning was quiet and modern. And for those who worry about such things, beach towels are in plentiful supply too. Travelling about was simple with taxis on hand (drivers excellent, informative and professional - if you ever find Daniel based at Jolly Beach he is the perfect example) but there's also a bus stop right outside the hotel which takes you into St. Johns and beyond. In accord with others I would recommend this hotel to people who want a quiet, relaxing break on one of the best beaches in Antigua. Darkwood Beach is a one stop bus ride up the road. Practically deserted in the morning. The adjacent salt ponds are perfect for bird watching. You can see the pelicans have breakfast in the morning and nest down in the evening. For anyone wanting a bit of action, try Paddles Eco-Tour. It's fun and exciting and you get to kayak around the mangroves; snorkel off an uninhabited island and have a couple of exhilerating speed boat rides. Summing up, the Rex Blue Heron is the perfect base; easy to travel to and from and perfect if you just want to veg out. Brilliant. We will return.
PS No sign of any air-crew either.......

I have visited the Heron seven times in the last 8 years. the thing you have to ask yourself is what do you want from a holiday....nice beach? Good food? Excellent service? lovely hotel? Let me tell you this is a perfect little peacefull clean resort with quite the most perfect beach in Antigua. This is the Caribean and the pace is slow. The staff are always on hand with any queries. The food in recent years has gone down.....only in quantity though NOT standards. This is a small hotel....with a very friendly intimate atmosphere. If its night life you crave find another hotel....but if a peaceful;...beautiful get away from it all.. put your feet up and enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the sun set. is your thing go for it.....there are more luxurious expensive hotels on the island...which will no doubt offer spas gyms massages and a a la carte menu and personal waiters...there are none of these at the heron but its the only hotel on the island that boasts the view of Monserrat Nevis and St kitts from its own very quiet beach. I would like to mention i have 3 children who have been going to this Resort since they were new borns....now they are all older and still love going. Oh yes, nearly forgot to mention snorkelling is fabulous and TURNERS resturant and THE LOBSTERPOT are also very close and are regarded amongst locals and visitors as excellent places to dine!

We stayed at the Rex Blue Heron for our honeymoon. As anyone know's who's recently got/getting married the bills keep piling up - and so we really wanted to go to Antigua... but had to do so on a bit of a budget!! I had read some mixed reviews about the Blue Heron, but the price was right so we gave it a whirl. I'm glad we did because it was fantastic!

The beach was simply a slice of heaven... really quiet and peaceful and on a clear day you could see Montserrat!

The accomodation was a little tired but very clean. The staff could not have been any more friendly.

A trip to Shirley Heights on Sunday night is recommended... there were a few couples that went from the hotel and so it gave a great opportunity to socialise with fellow guests.

The bar by the pool and beach came in very handy since it was so hot - we made regular trips there and the bar staff were more than happy to keep us topped-up.

If you go for the all-inclusive option there is ocean-kayaking, snorkelling and sailing available... the equipment is always availble and you just go help yourself. My husband also paid extra to go water-skiing. The boat isn't as powerful as he is used to, but he said it was well worthwhile to have a go since the sea was spectacular and like glass!

If you want a quiet get-away on a gorgeous beach on a budget then choose the Blue Heron! You have to remember that it is a 2/3 star hotel and you get what you pay for as far as amenities. But the location and level of service from the staff for us was 5 star!

As a timeshare owner and frenquent traveler we had the most amazing 2 weeks in quite sometime. The shock came when we arrived with 2 of our 3 children aged 17 1/2 and 10 and 2/3. Having travelled to many diamond and 5 star resorts this was quite a rude awaking for them, however they loved it as soon as they met the staff and the few guest on site!!! If your looking for quite you"ll find it, if you want to engage its there, and its so tiny you can even loose yourself on the beautiful beach. The food is alright for the first week, but the kitchen is so accomodating that you can and do get special requests, even when its closed. Although the bathrooms and furniture are dated its clean and for sleeping washing and changing you'd be hard pressed to find it anywhere else.
Its worth good consideration, since its right next door to Turners and about 4 mins by taxi to the Grand Princess. If your looking to party thats the place, and to come back to a quite hotel, is worth all the stars in the heavens.

me and my husband mike went tot he rex blue heron resort last november for my 22nd birthday and extended 5th anniversary present, we had a great time there it was brilliant, well apart from the sandflies!, please be aware of the sunflies and read up about them before you go as its a bit of a problem as i found out, its not the hotels fault they did warn us about them. they did ruin my last 2 days o the holiday though, apart from that the service was brilliant and the staf got to know us and many other couples on name base after a few days or so, the rooms were lovely and cleaned everyday by the lovely maids, they were really friendly too.
the beach and beach staff were brilliant there, really friendly and always happy, they didnt pester you all day like in some places too.
the food was nice there and there was a good choice but like in another review it says theres a seporate menu there that you have to ask for, in the first week we didnt kno it exsisted till another guest told us, that did all your favourates like chips, nuggets, burgers, fish and lobster, the waitreses were lovely,
the bar staff were really nice too all but one and iv read about him in a review on here too, his name was corey, he was so arrogant i too stopped going to the bar when he was ther but the rest latoyah and seeko were brilliant and a right laugh,
the water was lovely and i spent all day lying in it enjoying the relaxation, cats, dog and sunshine..
it was really hot believe me. it was the hottest place iv ever been,
id definatly go back there minus the sandflies, they are really bad(i stayed in after being attacked by them for 2 days with stinging legs!) take your repellant!!
i loved loved loved it and got the best tan and memories to last a lifetime xx
