“Blue Heron still fab!”

Blue Heron by Rex Resorts

Mar 19, 2008

Have just returned from the Blue Heron after two wonderful weeks with my husband. This was our 3rd stay and probably not our last.

Beach is still wonderful, as is the staff. We needed some assistance with contacting the UK by e-mail regarding a car rental booking that went wrong and we were able to use the manager's computer which was a huge help. They then organised a quick rental for us the next day.

We also went on Gillian's 'village tour' (see earlier review) which was very interesting. It still amazes me what grows naturally in Antigua - pomegranates is a new one!

Loved the new outdoor restaurant but found the music from the bar a bit loud on some occassions, especially at breakfast. The evening dress code was allowed to 'slip' sometimes - there seemed to be a run on men not wearing shoes - not sure this is 'etiquette' especially when using the washroom!

Our beachfront room was fine, a little smaller than we've had previously and the bathroom was a little 'run-down' but we soon got over this disappointment (in about 5 minutes of arrival) - might have had something to do with the on-arrival welcome rum punch, maybe? Fridge is a nice, new touch.

Got a little bored with the food but probably would anywhere we stay for two weeks but ventured out to OJ's down the beach. Also, Harmony Hall up to its usual excellant standard and tried La Busola at Runaway Bay for lunch - pretty amazing food! Dennis' at FFeyes beach has good views.

Went on both of Antigua Adventure's tours - loved them both but especially loved the Extreme (mainly for the speed and Stingray City was better than expected!).

Love the hotel, love the beach, love Antigua!

“2nd trip- superb again”

We visited the blue Heron for the 2nd time at the end of Jan beginning of Feb 08.
On arrival we were greeted like old friends, i'm not sure where else you would find that.
Sandy, Carleen, Jillian, Errol, Andy, Colin and Kerry-Ann, to mention just a few, helped make our holiday very enjoyable
All the staff were magnificent throughout our stay.
The beach was beautiful, uncrowded and right outside our room, ideal for an early morning swim.
Our room was comfortable and very clean with good quiet A/C. there was also a fridge , hair dryer and coffee machine. As pointed out by some other reviewers the rooms and bathrooms are not state of the art but everything functioned well during our stay. I think some of the negative comments (not too many lately) come from people not looking closely at what they are booking. It is a small friendly simple hotel on a stunning quiet beach. We especially enjoyed the seabreeze bar in the evenings (open till 11pm), perhaps this should be open every night weather permitting.
I would reccomend opting for beachfront rooms for the view, sunsets etc. I would also go for all inclusive, although be aware that as this is a small hotel meal choices can be limited. There are however two restaurants within walking distance.

If the beach is more important than the bathroom fittings - Go to the Blue Heron

If you would prefer chat with the staff rather than snap your fingers at them- Go to the Blue Heron

If you prefer drinks at the bar, a little local music and early to bed rather than nightclubs till 3am- Go to the Blue Heron

Hope this is helpful

“Lovely holiday”

Blue Heron by Rex Resorts

We stayed here for a quiet girlie week away on 18th Feb for a week.
Not only did we meet some amazing people (Lesley & Ray, Hazel & Steve) to have a fantastic time with, but we were pleasantly surprised with the hotel.
We had the most amazingly located room on the beach, which was cleaned daily.
We met some of the friendliest bar staff with great sense of humour - Errol, Andy & Colin.
Food was good, especially the BBQ night.
Only disappointment was that they dont gear the grill up in time for breakfast or lunch, so be prepared to queue a bit and relax in true caribbean style.

Staff were really helpful until the last day, when you couldnt keep your room on, even when you have asked previosuly and offered to pay, and no courtesy room was available, so nowhere to even dry your hair.

That said, if we could get the same room number we would go back!

“Great second visit.”

Blue Heron by Rex Resorts

As the title says, this was our second and no doubt not our last visit to this great little hotel. If you are a first time visitor to the Caribbean then just a little word of warning, remember the old adage 'when in Rome......', you just have to accept that the whole pace of things is SLOW! So, don't go getting annoyed or frustrated if your waiter/waitress doesn't go running off immediately to get your food/drink or whatever, be patient and go with the flow. Having said that, my wife and I can honestly say the staff are the friendliest bunch of people you could wish to meet. No doubt like others we have our favourites, Jillian, Errol, Andy, Colin, Kerry and Cherubin (sweet girl), but they are all really nice. Sandy is obviously determined to get the best from her staff but what a nice touch when she introduces them during the Saturday evening entertainment.

Negatives? Very few, but I would say that we were a bit unfortunate with our room, luck of the draw really, however the cleaning was not really up to the previous year's standard in our experience. The bath was badly stained, and the plug hole had not been cleaned out in weeks, lots of previous visitors' falling hair preventing the water running away. To be fair, had we complained no doubt it would have been sorted, but room 106 definately needs a NEW BATH. A bit of grease on the patio doors wouldn't go amiss either (o;

Highlights? Meeting one of our old friends from the previous year, Rick, and his wife Cheryl, two very nice Americans, but probably the real highlight of the trip was having Jillian take us on a 'walkabout'. Having done the touring bit the year before, we had made up our minds that we were just going to chill on the beach for the week. But then Jillian (Peters) told us that she has started doing this little tour which only takes about one and a half hours in total, and gives you the opportunity to see some of the culture and community beyond the hotel and the beach. It was fantastic, starting with a ten minute bus ride to Bolans, the village where Jillian lives. We met her Grandfather, a wonderful man, 81 years young, who told us about his younger days in Antigua, he lived in a place called Roses which now is just open land with cattle grazing and wonderful fruit trees and scenery. Jillian took us on a walk to this area, it was a great experience.
Jillian does these little trips after she finishes her work at 4pm. Take our advice, join her on one! She is a really lovely person, and knows everyone and everything about the local area.

Thanks to all the staff at Blue Heron for making our holiday such a memorable one.

We have just spent a week at this resort and cannot understand the negative comments we read prior to going. If you want fast impersonal service where everything is 'state of the art' then this is NOT the place for you. However, if you want to sample locally supplied fish cooked to order, Caribbean food, friendly and helpful staff then this is the place to be. The staff went to great lengths to ensure our holiday was perfect, booking trips that we wanted to do and suggesting other trips we might like and at no time did we feel presurized. We would definitely visit again.
