The Blue heron is a simple small Hotel on a beautiful Beach and in the best Location in Antigua overlooking Ocean. The staff are friendly, happy and make you feel really welcome. Pace is slow and perfect to relax. Thank you to Andy, Errol, Gillian, and all the staff for a wonderful holiday.

A place you will either Love or Hate. We Loved it.

If you want 5star accommodation don't come here.

On arrival you are welcomed with a fruit or rum punch before we were shown to our superior room. Rooms were adequate but clean with towels changed daily. There was plenty of storage with a good supply of coathangers. Toiletries were provided in the bathroom and a television (when you could get reception), fridge and tea / coffee making facilites. As it was ground coffee with powdered whitener we purchased Instant coffee and milk from the local shop 5 minutes stroll away. The replacement of tea baga was spasmodic depending on who cleaned your room but this was remedied by taking tea bags from the restaurant.

Most meals were buffet and depending on what time you went certain items could be missing. Glasses and teaspoons seemed in short supply, but you only had to ask and they would be fetched.

The staff were all lovely and went out of their way to please.

Low key entertainment was provided 5 nights per week and finished at 11pm.

This is a small friendly hotel where you get to know the staff and they know you. Sandy's weekly cocktail party is a good introduction for meeting staff and other guests. Sandy is working very hard to get her staff to think ahead with the help of Carleen the assistant manager. Carleen went out of her way to obtain tickets for the 20-20 Cricket which proved to be a great night out.

One suggestion we would make is that Blue Heron employs a porter,

If you are looking for a hotel in an isolated position situated on a beautiful sandy bay then the Blue Heron may be for you. There is a bus stop nearby to get you other parts of the island (an experience not to be missed) if you do get the urge to escape.

Suming up the Blue Heron is one of those places you hope does not be come popular or change too much so that it can still be enjoyed by those who appreciate tranquiity and the Antiguan charm.

We read all the reviews before going to the Blue Heron but decided to make up our own mind. We very much endorse the comments made by "Devon Honeymooners". We visited at the same time and our impressions were as follows: granted the room was "tired" but it was kept clean, the towels changed daily, comfortable bed, plenty of storage, wonderful views from the balcony along the bay and over the sea to Montserrat.
Fabulous, unspoilt beach, wonderful for long walks in the waves edge. Aquamarine sea, white sand with occasional beach sellers (3-4 in 2 weeks) not to mention a local bullock who wandered along the beach at breakfast time each morning on his way to see a lady friend on the adjacent headland.
Buffet dining most days, a bit hit and miss - no plates, glasses etc. and teaspoons were like gold-dust - but we found this eventually to be part of the charm of the place. The staff were lovely and we got to know them all as it is a small hotel.
If you are looking for a quiet holiday away from the madding crowd, in a beautiful, isolated, setting (the only hotel on this wonderful beach) with very little night-life although there is entertainment up to 11.00 p.m. most nights, and you are prepared to "go with the flow" the Blue Heron could be for you.
A special mention for Sandy Francis who worked extremely hard trying to get her staff to work as a team and think ahead, also to Carleen, Assistant Manager, who together with Sandy are striving to make Blue Heron the little gem it could be.
One more suggested improvement would be a porter to help carry luggage up the stairs to your room after a very long trip.
P.S. The sandfleis are a great nuisance - buy the spray from the hotel shop - English spray is useless!!

We have just returned from our honeymoon at the Blue Heron Hotel. We had a most wonderful time at an idyllic, tranquil location. The hotel was small and friendly and all the staff were very warm and went out of their way to make our 2 week stay an experience never to be forgotton.

We stayed in a ground floor beach room which had stunning views of the beach ,the sea and the Island of Montserrat. We were a 30 second walk from the 2 restaurants and the pool however, we were not disturbed at all in the evenings. The rooms were clean and comfortable and were serviced daily and any little problems we may have had were quickly resolved to our satisfaction.

The food was excellent, far better than we had expected . We thoroughly recommend the catch of the day .The waitressing staff and the bar staff were all so very friendly and were always ready to help and a credit to the hotel and to Carleen the Manageress and Ms Francis who were both so very helpful throughout our stay.

There was entertainment in the evening if you wanted it but it was very low key. If you are looking for nightlife, here is not the place, but if you are looking for a relaxing, tranquil holiday then we would thoroughly recommend this hotel and we would not hesitate to go back.

First, I had a really hard time deciding on a hotel for this trip because the majority of the hotels in Antigua were expensive all-inclusive properties. But even at the low end (at $300/night), these AI's still got many negative reviews.

So I decided to take my chances with Blue Heron. I did not have high expectations. At $150/night this hotel was clearly one of the cheaper options for Antigua....but seriously, since when did $150/ night = budget hotel????

Anyway, if you go with low expectations, this hotel will do just fine. It is a small hotel, on a nice beach and it was quiet, which is what we wanted.

The rooms were basic but clean enough. The bathroom could use work but it was sufficient. The room had a/c ceiling fan, small fridge, tv with 2 channels, no phone and a nice patio/balcony...basic. The room quality is equivalent to some $30 old motel room you would get in the outskirts of a US city.

No bed bugs or anything, however, the room was breeding with mosquitoes when we arrived. But we got some spray from the front desk and that was taken care of.

The immediate area is not developed/dense but there are three restaurants close by, Turners (lunch), OJs and Gibsons. Walking to the restaurant at night was no fun because you had to walk and dodge cars. You could walk on the beach, but the police passed by and stopped us saying it was dangerous to walk on the beach at night (which would be true in most places anyway).

Overall for what it actually was, $150 is way overpriced but apparently, for something on the beach in Antigua it is a bargain.

  • Liked — Quiet location on the beach
  • Disliked — Not convenient to get around, property is old and needs renovation/upgrades
