We stayed at Galley Bay July 9-16 and it was the most amazing vacation I have ever had. This was my husband's first vacation out of Texas, so everything was new and awesome for him. I have stayed at a few other Caribbean all-inclusives including a Beaches, Riu, and Allure (which has since changed owners), and Galley Bay was much better in my opinion. In a couple of the otheres, the bedroom interiors were better than Galley Bay, but the service, tranquility, and food at Galley Bay was far superior.
There were some staff members who weren't always the most upbeat, but for the most part the staff was excellent. As others have said, nothing is ever too much to ask of them. There was an evening that we ate an earlier dinner, and were hungry again at 9:45, so we called the guest services and in 30 or 45 minutes they delivered cheese, crackers, and grapes to our room. Another night we didn't feel like getting dressed up to eat, and they brought us a menu, and we ordered our food through guest services and it was promptly brought to our room. Anything you want, just ask, and if they can do it they will.
The food was sooo good. I have had many buffets at other all inclusives and the food at Galley Bay is in a completely different league. The wait staff is excellent and we had 5 course meals every day, which were as good as any 4 or 5 star restaurant we've been to. I recommend you try the soups everyday. I am not a soup person, but it was fantastic. My husband loved the BBQ day which was Thursday, but I actually preferred every other night to the buffet. The Gauguin was very nice and romantic....get there a little early for your reservation at night to get the good tables closest to the water for a spectacular view. Lunch at the Gauguin is the most laid back menu, with nachos and lots of sandwiches. The nachos were great by the way. They were out of lobster the last few days, so if you're wanting to try it you may want to ask for it when you get there. I thought we'd wait until one of the last days to eat the lobster, and we missed our chance.
We stayed in a Gauguin Cottage, and loved it. We were actually upgraded to a Deluxe room, but they kindly showed us the Gauguin we had booked, and we chose to move to the Gauguin. We were really more interested in the privacy the Gauguin provided, plus the plunge pool in the evenings can't be beat. The separate bath didn't bother us at all...this was exactly what we were looking for. It felt authentic and intimate. We would really recommend the Gauguin Cottages.
The beach and water was amazing also. We chose Galley Bay for it's quiet atmosphere and I didn't feel I needed all the activity and loud music...the sound of the crashing waves and the birds was music to me. We wanted to just relax, which we did almost everyday on the beach. We swam everyday we were there, and the water was not rough at all. I suppose it's much rougher during their winter. Javid, the water sports staff member, was so much fun and we really enjoyed talking with him. We went kayaking one day, but that's the most activity we did.
We did take two excursions, one into St. John's to shop...a couple hours was plenty for us, and Adventure Antigua Xtreme tour. That was really fun because you get to see the coast of the entire island, and we were so glad we chose Galley Bay when seeing the other resorts...especially the Sandals. They're doing so much work there and we met a couple at the airport who really felt it wasn't worth the money.
I can't say enough about how amazing this place is. I can't wait to go back...maybe in 5 years when I can save more money! It's definitely a place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the person you came with.
