I relied heavily on tripadvisor in booking our trip so I have been very detailed on my thoughts for others to read when planning their trip! Hopefully I haven't left anything out.
We were at Galley Bay from June 27 - July 5.
The first experience of the first -class service was upon check-in. We had a late flight to Antigua, so we didn't arrive to the resort until well after the dinner hour, but when we were whisked to our room via golf cart we arrived to sandwiches, fruit and a chilled bottle of champagne (honeymoon perk). We took our late-night dinner and toasting glasses to the beach where we sat under the moonlight and soaked in the sounds of the waves! What a way to start our honeymoon!
We stayed in Room 67, which was a beachfront suite. Great location away from the center of the resort, but between the restaurants. Plenty of privacy....in fact we really didn't have much interaction with other guests, unless we initiated conversation. There are plenty of beach loungers, under the thatch umbrellas in front of each suite. Never had to venture away from the backdoor of our suite.
ROOM~ We read other reviews of noise, we were not bothered by any nature. You do hear the frogs and ocean waves, but was not at all anything to keep you awake. The air conditioner sound actually drowns most of that out. We found we slept better at Galley Bay than at home because of the ocean waves! We were in Suite 67, we had a deluxe suite. Our suite was very large. Huge bathroom with double shower -no bathtub. No complaints, but heard wonderful comments about the Premium Suites. They were sold out during our visit. The next building Rooms 69 and higher were newer buildings without the slats and totally enclosed by glass. (Management told us all will be changed to complete glass soon)
STAFF ~The staff goes beyond description. We had the best experience with everyone we encountered, whether it was housekeeping, grounds staff, restaurant staff, guest relations, bar etc There was not one person that didn't greet us with a "hello or good morning" or respond to any of our requests with a "my pleasure" The new manager, James, was very outgoing and eager to hear what guests have to say. But the daily interaction with the other staff is worth mentioning....There are a few people I will not forget, Kerry, dancing with us on our last night or singing during the day, Saskier, Caryl, Mike Mathews, Hazeldeen, Natasha, Stuart, Kenny, Daryl and Iba. The Spa Staff as well were unbelievable; Jocylyn gave me the best 2 massages I've ever had!
FOOD~ The food was plentiful and delicious. Never went hungry
There are 2 choices for eating, the Gauguin and the SeaGrape. We ate breakfast each morning at SeaGrape and rotated for lunch btw the 2. Dinner is by reservations only at Gauguin (make reservations in am for the evening sittings 6:30 or 8:30)
We ate at both for dinner, not disappointed at either location.
There is also a 4 o'clock tea that has sandwiches and cookies, 5 o'clock BarBites, and 6 o'clock Hordourves. Plenty off opportunities to ward off the hunger pangs, the difficult thing is now we are at home we don't have the same offerings in the afternoon!
Don't forget the Manager's Reception on Wednesday night and the BBQ on Thursday night, both at the SeaGrape Restaurant. Don't miss either of those events.
Note: There are tons of little birds, which make themselves very comfortable on your tabletops. We had plenty of meals with one or two joining us, they do not take things off your plate unless it is pushed their way. Not annoying at all.
OUTINGS~
A trip to St Johns was interesting for a few hours, we visited the museum and the cathedral, but shopping is much like other port cities and the usual port stores.
I had planned and booked a tour prior to arriving Antigua, based on reviews with adventureantigua. We chose the CircumNav tour which I highly recommend. (See pictures) Galley Bay can aid in reservations, although I contacted via the web directly with the company.
Shirley Heights on Sunday Night, wasn't a bad trip, but definitely caters to the hotel groups. It is an evening with live bands, cash bar and food to purchase - in our case a thunderstorm also added to the ambience!
We were very content with our days of waking up, eating breakfast, lying on the beach, eating again, massages, eating, lying by the pool....You easily lose track of the time or the day of the week. We loved it!
OTHER AMENITIES~ there is a library and internet access for guest’s convenience. The sports area on beach offers sailing lessons and a variety of sailboats, and snorkel equipment. We snorkeled in Galley Bay and saw a variety of oceanlife from fish to jellyfish.
One thing I wish I had packed was an inflatable raft to float in the ocean, there were a few that were floating on them and they would have been nice as it gets hot on the beach.
MINOR BEEFS~The biggest complaint I could find was the few choices/varieties of desserts. My husband, not a sweet tooth, didn't find that a problem. We did voice this with the new Manager, James, and he appreciates all comments or suggestions. The other noted comment was that if you need cash you must go to town to the bank, so bring plenty of cash if you plan on using cabs for any excursions. Otherwise cash is not needed for anything. The nightly entertainment but it ends by 11ish. Not that there is a party crowd, but the bar stays open till midnight, and it is awfully quiet - unless you make friends to socialize with...which we did and usually were the last ones to finally wander down the paths to our suites. We did express the possibility of extending the entertainment until bar closes. Especially if you eat the latter sitting, normally it is quiet by the time you make it back to the TeePee Bar.
My husband and I were so reluctant in our departure, we have never been pampered and taken care of at any other place EVER.....we unfortunately realized that our days were numbered and our flight home was an early departure. Not to be put out, Iba, made sure that we had a golfcart at 5:45am and a cab to the airport by 6am. And again, there was a 'to-go" breakfast of fresh fruit, breakfast bar and drinks prepared for us to take on our trip to the airport.
My husband spent hours, planning, reading reviews, and even changing reservations from other resorts before deciding on Galley Bay and I can say without a doubt - that was the best decision we made. The best vacation ever. We only stayed 8 days, and promise to extend that our next visit.
I have attached pictures and it is more beautiful in person!
