my wife and I just returned from our 7 day honeymoon at Galley Bay and all we have left until we return are our movies which I am already viewing over and over again to remind me of how wonderful Galley Bay is. We decided that for our honeymoon we wanted simply to relax and enjoy the beach - with peace and quiet, excelent food and a beachfront room where we could step right out of our room onto the beach and relax in front of the ocean and swim everyday. our travel agent recomended Galley Bay to us and we were not disappointed. Galley Bay was exactly this - a place for people who simply love the beach. For seven days my wife and I literally lived on the beach at Galley Bay, and it was incredible. We stayed in a deluxe beachfront room which was very spacious. When we arrived, another plane had also arrived so it took at least an hour to get through customs in Antigua. Our driver from Galley Bay waited for us and warmly greeted us (as did the person who stamped our passports). A friendly face was very welcome after a long trip and long wait online. This was our first lesson in carribean life - there is no need to hurry. Take it slow and be patient, and very much was the lesson I learned on this trip. The pace of life and the warmness of the people of Antigua is comforting. After the twisty turny ride through the streets of St John, and around the harbour, we proceeded on a winding country road with goats and quant landscapes to the entrance to Galley Bay. We were taken by cart to the beach, to have our first look. The sea was a lovely blue and was very calm, folks were sipping drinks and relaxing. the landscaping was lush and very well maintained, and from the moment we arrrived we felt like royality. The service was excelent. Upon arriving at our room, we found a bottle of Champagne and fresh flowers in our room. The first thing that caught my attention when we arrived at our room was the view. From our bed to the sea was just a few steps. We stayed in deluxe beachfront room in the single story building at the east end of the resort. It had a king size bed, two chairs and couch, a t.v, a fridge stocked with water, beer, and soda, (which was restocked with lots of fresh bottles of water every day as that was all my wife and I drank in our room). the bath was huge with two showers which we especially got used to. The back door to our room led to a spacious covered porch with an outdoor shower to wash the sand off. The porch overlooked the sea with two very comfy lounge chairs where we spent much of our time.
Each day was the same for us, and that was exactly what we wanted - relaxing to the sound of the waves, the frogs and the birds, reading a good book and swiming in the ocean all day and every day long into the evening. The east end of Galley Bay (to the right of the seagrape if you are looking towards the sea) is the calmer side - the waves were small and on some days non-existant, making it very fine for swimming. On the other end of Galley Bay near the Gaugan restaurant the sea was rougher and had rocks in some spots. But in front of our room, on the east end, the surf was calm enough for swimming each and every day - we could walk right out into the ocean as the sand was smooth as silk all the way into the sea.
The surf was very calm the first day. A storm came on the second day of our visit which made the sea rougher for two days. This resulted in red flags for 3 days on the beach. However it seemed that in front of our room on the calmer east end of the beach, even when there were red flags, the surf was not too rough for us so Consequently we went swimming every day despite the flags and enjoyed being knocked about by an occasional "wave" as we were swimming on these days. By the fourth day, the flags were gone, and for each of remaining 4 days we had extremely calm surf with no rough surf at all. On the 5th and 6th days, in fact, the sea was extremely calm.

Each day we had a short rain storm which lasted no more than 10 minutes, followed by brillant blue skies and warm sunshine. Besides lounging and swimming in front of our beachfront room, my wife and I enjoyed taking walks around the bird santuary lagoon, and spent an hour at the pool one day but quickly returned to the beach. the large fresh water pool is not the main attraction at galley bay, but it was still very nice as well if you prefer a pool.

As for the food and service - I can't say enough about how excelent it was. We were made to feel regal by the staff. Veronica the woman who cleaned our rooms couldn't do enough for us, giving us fresh beach towels each day upon request, and keeping our room spotless. Every person we met greeted us with a warm smile and quick hello if we smiled back or made eye contact. The people are reserved in Antigua but very friendly and quick to warmly greet you if you make eye contact.

The food was plentiful. Each night I was stuffed. The quality food each day was like being on the food t.v. network. Each dish was well presented as a gourmet meal - the mornings began with a buffet consisting of fresh fruit - oranges, grapefruits, pinapples, prunes, and lots of melon as well as assorted breads, rolls, juice and cerial. We chose the buffet to start our day, filling our plates to overflowing with fresh fruit and going back often as we like for more. then we sometimes enjoyed a sit down breakfast of pancakes or bacan and eggs and toast. Each day featured a different type of pancake, strawberry, blueberry, cococut..

Lunch was like dinner for us, it consisted of appetizer, entree, and desert, in reasonible but not super sized portions. We actually like that alot - the food had sensibled sized portions so that we could savor and enjoy each course. The dishes featured alot of local vegatables and seafood- There were traditional dishes like local vegatable soups, seasoned rice, jerk pork, and Chicken Roti (my favorite) as well as sandwiches and burgers and fries. We chose to eat healthy and try traditional dishes of the islands.
On the third day, I requested a "ginger beer" with my lunch. I had it once before a long time ago, and really enjoyed it, so I wanted to try it again. I knew this was a traditional island drink. A woman named Althea (our favorite person at Galley Bay), smiled and said to me, sure we will make it for you, she then skuried over to the bartender, and the two had a long chat, and my ginger beer arrived. She then told me how she makes it at home, and how it is a traditional drink of the islands. I requested it again and again as the taste of Chicken Roti washed down with spicy Ginger beer was memorable.

For dinner on thursday night there is a huge all-you-can-eat buffet and a carribean bbq, Wednesday night features another all-you-can-eat cocktail party were we enjoyed shrimp, meat patties, and a wonderful spicy. meatloaf on a stick. All the other nights are ala-carte traditional sit down dinners.

Dinner at Galley Bay is a special event every night. I liked the idea of a dress code as it made each evening feel like a special night out. ( Men must wear long pants (not jeans) and a colared shirt after 7 pm. )
As the sun set over the beach, and the blue sky went dark and glowed, the lights over the beach changed to soft hues from the restaurant and soft lights facing up towards the palm trees and out at the waves. The frogs and assorted night creatures started chirping loudly, and you could hear these sounds mixed in with the sound of the surf, setting the mood for romance.

Each night featured live music until around 11 pm. the steel band with calypso singer on sunday evening was my favorite. I held my wifes hand and savored our drinks as we listened to the steel band play "island in the sun" and were lost in another more relaxing world. The mood at Galley Bay is pure relaxation even into the night. If you are in a hurry, this place will slow you down to a more human pace, if you are stressed, this place will calm you down. If you are romantic, the sights and sounds will set the mood for love. Dinners like lunch featured alot of vegatables and were very healthy. We felt that we ate well at Galley Bay enjoying hearty soups, crisp local salads, savory appetizers, and a very well presented main courses of chicken, beef, fish of the day, or a vegatable dish. There are 2 restaurants - the Sea Grape, where we ate most of the time and the Gaugon, which was smaller and featured isolated tables under small huts overlooking the sea. One night at the Gaugan my wife had swordfish, and I had a coconut curry chicken dish, and watched the sea gently roll from our little beachfront hut as we watched lizards climbing down from the trees and birds occasionly arrived at our table and greeted us personally looking for a sugar packet to steal. . A rain came in which made the mood even more romantic as we ate under our little hut with the night creatures chirping and the ever present sounds of the surf.

Nights in our room were filled with the perpetual sound of the ocean surf and the constant chirping of night creatures. This takes some getting used to the first night but then lulls you to sleep as if you are sleeping in the jungle by the sea. In the deluxe room there is only screens on the windows - no glass, so you feel like you are sleeping outdoors.

There is alot of wildlife at Galley Bay. Birds everywhere - and yes bugs. If you leave the door open, the birds fly right into the room to steal packets of sugar. In the morning, I took a walk to a juice bar which was open all the time near the pool, and spotted a mongoose crossing my path in front of me.

Our last day was sad. I didn't want to leave, but knew it was time. Paradise in this life is only a short time. We hope to come back again. My last meal at Galley Bay was a dish of coconut ice cream, as I looked over the ocean with sadness about leaving. Althea warmly said goodbye at breakfast, and many of staff bid us farewell and safe journey. I will look at our movies over and over to remind myself of our 7 days in paradise.

We stayed at Galley over Christmas for 2 weeks and also had our wedding there it really is your dream holiday.
It is everything you could possible imagine.
We stayed in the beach front rooms & our view of the beach was amazing it really took our breath away.
My family stayed in the cottages they were very good too with there very own plunge pool, they loved it.

The food in both restaurants was fantastic no complaints there from any of us.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Our wedding day was great, everthing went so well no hitches at all, the pics & dvd are fantastic everything we could have wanted.

If your wanting a very relaxing & chilling out holidy this resort is for you.

We are hoping to return to Galley very soon as this is one of best places we have ever been to.

My wife and I spent 10 very relaxing days here. All staff very friendly and will do anything to help. Delux rooms are well equiped and large, especially the bathrooms! The food is excellent and varied (do try the local dish options). The beach and activities are well run and maintained including a library and Internet room (2 PCs). You can do as much or as little as you want!

  • Liked — Spacious, nice balcony straight onto beach
  • Disliked — Some way from land based attractions (15 minutes by taxi)
  • Tips/Secrets: — Avoid the highest numbered luxury rooms, there is a pond that attracts mosquitoes.

Sara and I stayed at Galley bay for two weeks from the 24th November, here are our thoughts…Flew on Virgin Atlantic, premium economy, liked the twilight check-in and the flight was called on time the next morning…

Unfortunately, however we took off about 45 mins late (I was told later that we had been waiting for a couple of passengers – probably first class).. Uneventful flight but one down side was that I had pre-ordered a bottle of champagne which they told me would be served about two hours into the flight… well it didn’t arrive and when I enquired I was told that they had no record of it.. Eventually, with only an hour of the flight left, they found the bottle (and the message that I had asked for) and asked me if I wanted them to put it on ice!! – We took it with us. The net result of our late take off was that we were in a queue of planes at the far end and had to circle for another 40 mins or so and when we did land and disembark, there were three or four planes that had arrived at the same time and the arrivals hall was full to bursting with some degree of resulting chaos…

A word of advice, once you’ve cleared passport control. Pay one of the porters $1 a bag for your luggage, they will fast-track you through baggage handling/customs.

Nice trip to the resort and a rum punch on arrival before being taken over the bridge to our home for the next two weeks…

We had opted for the Gaugin cottage and weren’t disappointed, ours was actually the family Gaugin (no.5) which has a second bedroom cottage, which came in useful (later).

I won’t bore you all with an in-depth description of the place (there is plenty of that around), I’d just like to share some of the reservations that we had about this holiday which I pointed out to the management on the comments card that we filled in before we left.

Firstly, breakfast…. Waited-on a la carte service is all well and good, but it means that you’ll be spending up to an hour having breakfast (even if all you want is a couple of fried eggs and a bit of white toast)… they need to have an egg/omelette station and some of the simple things (ham/bacon/sausage) need to be out on a buffet.

Next, Drinks, or rather LACK of them, Premium that is…..The premium drinks are rationed, Sara likes Baileys and often I was given a poor second rate (and poor tasting) substitute which I took back and when I pointed out that it wasn’t baileys the bar girl explained that she wasn’t allowed to open another bottle of the real stuff until the fake had been finished… fine I said, just keep serving me the rubbish and I’ll simply pour it away till you’ve finished the bottle….

Other guests were unhappy with the quality of the mixers supplied, one chap asked the management to get in some Sch (you know who) tonic for his Gin and was assured that some would be brought in.. after four days inquiring he was eventually told that there was NONE available on the island!! (a bit funny that as it’s the same company that supplies their Coke)

There were a number of weddings whilst we were there… one lunchtime a group of four girls came to the bar to get some champagne (cava) to take away, one of them was the bride who was getting married later that afternoon… we suggested that they ask for a bottle of bubbly to take back to the room, but this wasn’t allowed, they would be charged for it!!! HOW BAD IS THAT??

Next, Staff… I found some of them to be pretty dour, even when we tried to start a conversation we would often get single word answers without a smile… notable exception was Carthaginea, a.k.a. trouble, who was always so bright and bubbly…and a further mention for Kenny in the tepee bar.. Mike Matthews in the Seagrape is a real character, I still chuckle when I think of him announcing Wahoo fish as the special of the day!! – that guy could do voice-overs in the movies!

One lunch time we walked down to the Gaugin… OK it was about 3 mins before 12 but we indicated that there was no problem and we would be very happy to sit at the bar and have a drink… well the (no name badge) waitress huffed and took us to a table, didn’t pull out Sara’s chair and dropped the menus on the table without a word of welcome….

Next problem was that the table (right at the front of the restaurant) was SWARMING with ants and when we asked to be moved, her reply was “oh they’re only the red ones… they don’t bite”!! – we got moved and then 5 mins later another couple was placed there and also asked to be moved… only then did someone clean the area up… still our waitress was so grumpy that lunchtime and we didn’t feel welcome at all….

Entertainment at night is very low-key and everything closes at midnight (or on some nights at 11:30 if there aren’t many people around!

Food mostly OK, but some very variable cuts of meat, one night at the Gaugin I ordered Lamb chops medium and was served with two charred chops each about half an inch thick, a few nights later the same request brought forth two chops that were 2 inches thick and RAW in the centre….

Beach was good, on the days when the red flags weren’t flying (about 50%) the hobie cats, canoes and boards were getting used regularly..
One gripe about the beach, the excursions that pick up from there can’t always do so because of the roughness of the waves… the boat that came to pick us up for the sunset trip was such a case and the shouted for us to make our own way around to the next bay (hawksbill) and they would pick us up from there.. they gave us 10 mins to make the trip, well we couldn’t be bothered…

I know that the hotel has no connection with the excursions (but they do advertise them, and will organise for you) but it would be good if there were a simple landing stage (a small retracting one on wheels would be good enough)

Mozzies/sand fleas – RAMPANT! – bitten to death despite 50% deet applied liberally and Vitamin B tablets… the beach is particularly deadly later in the afternoon…

There is a well-stocked library and a selection of board games

My wife enjoyed her massage and pedicure, you need to book these early to get the time that you want…

Nice touch by the hotel was a bottle of Cava delivered to our room on the morning of our anniversary, together with a hand –written note!

Going back to the spare bedroom thing, we met some couples who needed somewhere to change and shower before going home so we lent them our spare room… but there are cabins down at the Gaugin end of the resort that you can hire after vacating your room , they are perfect for the purpose and worth the money!

All in all a good holiday, nothing to do except sleep/lounge/read/eat/drink.. perhaps a little too quiet and one or two things could be improved…5 star, no, probably 3 and a half at best… would we go again? – possibly, but there are still other islands to see….

In conclusion, on the way home we were asked to make ourselves known to the cabin crew and having done so, the chief attendant came to us apologising for the mix-up on the outward flight… she had tried to upgrade us to first class but it was full but shortly after take-off produced truffles and champagne (real stuff!!) and told us to go into the first class bar and have whatever we wanted…

Grateful thanks to Gloria, a Virgin Atlantic customer services officer who we met in Galley Bay and who obviously had “had a word” when she got home… BLESS YOU!

Any specific queries, pm or email me…

I feel like I should do my good deed and catch up on some reviews.

Galley Bay was a great resort that is a borderline amazing resort. I would recommend the resort to anyone based on it's beauty and staff friendliness, but there are two negatives:

1) The powerful surf. If you like to float aimlessly in the water this is not the resort for you. The waves are extremely powerful and there are boulders in the water. One lady was knocked over and had to get a neck brace due to her fall.

2) The food is average. I'm not a big fan of stuffy five star restaurants, but the food was a little blaaaaa...No shrimp and the lobster was extra.....

My wife and I returned from Jumby Bay in October 06, and it's a different world with the calm surf and exquisite food. There is a catch in that JB is more expensive than GB.

You can't go wrong w/ Galley Bay as it is a great resort.
