We stayed for 10 days in Galley Bay in early November 2006 for our honeymoon. It was warm, sunny and very peaceful. Most of the guests are British, with a few Canadians, Americans and others mixed in.
ROOMS: We stayed in a Deluxe Beachfront on an upper floor. It had a king bed, two chairs, desk, armoire with TV, walk-in closet with key safe. The bathroom is very large with a walk-in shower. The windows have screens and louvered windows. The room also had an airconditioning unit which you can choose to turn on or let the ocean breeze in through the windows. The upper deck was covered with chaise wicker chairs and very relaxing for watching the waves. You will hear the waves during the day and at night.
BEACH: Galley Bay beach was the nicest beach we saw on Antigua. We rented a car and drove around the island and saw a number of the 365 beaches, and Galley Bay was beautiful. It is a long stretch 3/4 mile with soft sand and rolling waves. A few rocks, but no seaweed. The water was warm and beautiful. There are plenty of fresh water showers to rinse of the sand and salt water. Note - some days the waves are strong and can knock you around. The beaches in Antigua are public, so you will see the occaisional local selling their trinkets. They will likely approach you and if you're not interested, they are good about moving on.
RESTAURANTS: The Sea Grape is the main outdoor dining room, with seated breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a partial buffet for breakfast with fruits, yogurts, cereals, breads and juices. The food is by far some of the best food we have had at an all-inclusive. The Gauguin is open for lunch and dinner, with required reservations for dinner. This is a quaint dining area, with straw huts for each table. The lunch chicken wings are tasty, and the beef tenderloin for dinner is delicious. Wine by the glass is readily available as all-inclusive, otherwise you can order entire bottles of wine for a fee.
POOL: The pool is nestled away from the ocean, surrounded by tropical trees and plants. The pool is refreshing, but we preferred the beach.
BARS: There are 3 bars to quench your thirst. All bars serve the same drinks, including the local beer Wadali and a special of the day. There is also a mini-fridge in your room stocked with bottle water, beer and sodas. They refill it every day.
ACTIVITIES: Galley Bay is peaceful and relaxing. If you're looking for organized toga parties, this is not the place for you. They have a spa, tennis court, ping pong, bicycles and jogging trail. By the beach, you can borrow kayaks, sailing equipment, snorkeling, etc (non-motorized). Every night they have a local band during the dinner hour until 10 or 11pm. The musicians are very talented, playing a variety of Carribean music.
TROPICAL BUGS: You will likely get bit by bugs. They seemed to like the females the most, and the bug spray with the highest DEET concentration worked the best (20% or higher). I reapplied bug spray frequently. They bit during the morning, day and night.
STAFF: Mike in the Sea Grape was the friendliest, but overall a wondeful staff. We've been to other places in the Carribean that are friendlier, but the staff works hard and does well.
TIPPING: We saw almost no tipping going on. It was difficult for our American sensibilities, but it is what it is. We left a few bills for the house cleaning staff every day and for the bell staff with our bags, but the rest of the guests do not tip, or if they did - we never saw it.
EXCURSIONS: We rented a car for 2 days through Guest Services. We toured the island ourselves, which is an adventure as most of the roads have potholes, goats, donkeys and are not marked. We found our way by the marked gas stations on the map. Nelson's Dockyard is worth the visit, as well as Shirley Heights for the view. We heard that the "trip" to Shirley Heights on Sunday nights is a tourist trap. We also drove to several of the beaches, including Half Moon Bay, rated one of the best beaches in the Carribean. The island is beautiful but you will also see much poverty. If you rent a car - rent a jeep or 4X4. You'll need it.
It was sunny and beautiful every day. You're going to love Galley Bay.
