We stayed at Galley Bay at the start of August, in the two weeks leading up to their refurbishment. Consequently, it was fairly quiet there as they wound down to closing for 6 weeks. This did nothing to affect our stay though. In fact if anything it improved it as there were fewer guests.
When we arrived we were greeted by a rum punch and then whisked off in a golf buggy to our room - a deluxe beachfront room. We had been upgraded by Virgin Holidays as we were on our honeymoon, but cheekily asked at reception for a further upgrade, which they unexpectantly gave us! This shouldn't really surprise you though; they are so eager to please and so incredibly welcoming that nothing is too much trouble here.
We stayed in a ground floor room, which I would prefer any day over the 1st floor rooms simply because it meant we were about half a second to the sand... and about another 5 seconds to the sea. You could hear the people upstairs walking around but we spent that little time in our room that we didn't particurly care. The room was nice enough with a big bed, dressing table and chair and a table and 2 comfy chairs. The bathroom had a big walk-in shower and double sinks. You could hear the waves and the tree frogs on a night, but anyone who has done the slightest amount of research on this hotel or on the caribbean knows this is to be expected... and you'll miss it when you get home!
Some people have mentioned that the location of these rooms is not the best, with rocks in the sea, but we didn't find this a problem at all. We only had one day when there was particularly rough waves, but it was fun to be out in it to be honest.
The Sea Grape restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The lunch menu is the same each day although has about 5 or 6 different specials, so there is always something different to eat. In fact we probably enjoyed the lunches more than any other meal. The dinner menu changes every day, although always has staples such as salads. We enjoyed every meal we had there, in particular the local fish dishes such as mahi mahi and grouper. If you ever wanted anything off menu though they were always accomdating.
The Gauguin Restaurant served lunch (until 5pm) and dinner, although had the same menu each day. The food there was wonderful however, and we went back several times. The setting is particularly romantic, and we found that if we booked the earlier sitting (6:45pm insetad of 8:30pm) we were often the only people there. If you're going to order lobster (a small charge for this), then this is the place to have it. We had a wonderful lobster thermidor, (not cooked quite as we're used to, but wonderful nonetheless,) which we would thoroughly recommend.
The staff were largely brilliant, in particular Mike (the Maitre d' - got us lobster when there were none to be found, we'll forever wonder if he went fishing for it himself), Ian Bailey (the Duty Manager), Natasha, Nola, Levique, Kenny and to be honest pretty much everyone else. We had a great time just sitting round chatting to them about everything under the sun. The guys running the watersports were great too; very helpful when we showed such complete ineptitude at sailing the hobie cat. (If you want to do any jetskiing look for big Sean, always on the beach.)
We met so many (friendly) people - mainly from the UK and the US - it's a great resort for sitting at the bar talking! The entertainment is good and the bands will often take requests. Look out for Calypso Joe. He had us in stiches singing about his bamboo!
We did the Wadadli Cats Circumnavigation and the Adventure Antigua Eco Tour each of which are not to be missed. If you're feeling extravagant take the helicopter ride to Montserrat, which was amazing. St Johns is good for a days wandering, but try and go somewhere other than just the duty free part of town. Shirley Heights is nothing particularly spectacular when you have Galley Bay to come back to!
I can't recommend this place enough and can't wait to be back there...
