“Love Galley Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2005

We stayed at Galley Bay at the start of August, in the two weeks leading up to their refurbishment. Consequently, it was fairly quiet there as they wound down to closing for 6 weeks. This did nothing to affect our stay though. In fact if anything it improved it as there were fewer guests.

When we arrived we were greeted by a rum punch and then whisked off in a golf buggy to our room - a deluxe beachfront room. We had been upgraded by Virgin Holidays as we were on our honeymoon, but cheekily asked at reception for a further upgrade, which they unexpectantly gave us! This shouldn't really surprise you though; they are so eager to please and so incredibly welcoming that nothing is too much trouble here.

We stayed in a ground floor room, which I would prefer any day over the 1st floor rooms simply because it meant we were about half a second to the sand... and about another 5 seconds to the sea. You could hear the people upstairs walking around but we spent that little time in our room that we didn't particurly care. The room was nice enough with a big bed, dressing table and chair and a table and 2 comfy chairs. The bathroom had a big walk-in shower and double sinks. You could hear the waves and the tree frogs on a night, but anyone who has done the slightest amount of research on this hotel or on the caribbean knows this is to be expected... and you'll miss it when you get home!

Some people have mentioned that the location of these rooms is not the best, with rocks in the sea, but we didn't find this a problem at all. We only had one day when there was particularly rough waves, but it was fun to be out in it to be honest.

The Sea Grape restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The lunch menu is the same each day although has about 5 or 6 different specials, so there is always something different to eat. In fact we probably enjoyed the lunches more than any other meal. The dinner menu changes every day, although always has staples such as salads. We enjoyed every meal we had there, in particular the local fish dishes such as mahi mahi and grouper. If you ever wanted anything off menu though they were always accomdating.

The Gauguin Restaurant served lunch (until 5pm) and dinner, although had the same menu each day. The food there was wonderful however, and we went back several times. The setting is particularly romantic, and we found that if we booked the earlier sitting (6:45pm insetad of 8:30pm) we were often the only people there. If you're going to order lobster (a small charge for this), then this is the place to have it. We had a wonderful lobster thermidor, (not cooked quite as we're used to, but wonderful nonetheless,) which we would thoroughly recommend.

The staff were largely brilliant, in particular Mike (the Maitre d' - got us lobster when there were none to be found, we'll forever wonder if he went fishing for it himself), Ian Bailey (the Duty Manager), Natasha, Nola, Levique, Kenny and to be honest pretty much everyone else. We had a great time just sitting round chatting to them about everything under the sun. The guys running the watersports were great too; very helpful when we showed such complete ineptitude at sailing the hobie cat. (If you want to do any jetskiing look for big Sean, always on the beach.)

We met so many (friendly) people - mainly from the UK and the US - it's a great resort for sitting at the bar talking! The entertainment is good and the bands will often take requests. Look out for Calypso Joe. He had us in stiches singing about his bamboo!

We did the Wadadli Cats Circumnavigation and the Adventure Antigua Eco Tour each of which are not to be missed. If you're feeling extravagant take the helicopter ride to Montserrat, which was amazing. St Johns is good for a days wandering, but try and go somewhere other than just the duty free part of town. Shirley Heights is nothing particularly spectacular when you have Galley Bay to come back to!

I can't recommend this place enough and can't wait to be back there...

We seem to be just one of many couples who have had their honeymoons cancelled at short notice. Having made our choice over a year in advance we are obviously gutted to have our plans change at the last minute. We cannot understand how a supposedly fully booked resort can justify closing thus ruining so many peoples idea of a holiday of a lifetime. We also were offered the 'alternative' of sandals which I know,as a travel agent, is overpriced and very overrated! We now have to go back to work after our wedding so that we can still get something like the honeymoon we booked. We are still going to Antigua but will now be spending our money at Blue Waters instead.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Galley Bay, having read reviews and taken our time choosing the dream destination. All I can say is, we were not dissapointed! Galley Bay is literally paradise. The setting is stunning, the service is cool and professional and the food is fantastic! Having taken the Wadadli Cat circumnavigation (so much fun buy the way) and seen other resorts on the pick up/drop off, it certainly has the best beach and the most stylish landscaping and accomodations.

The tree frog chorus is lovely. If you just sit in the evening drinking your (included) champagne, listening to the tree-frogs and the waves and look out to sea, you cant fail to relax. The whole island chills you out- you have no choice! I even forgot what I did for a living at one point.

We took a taxi tour of Antigua with Ambrose one afternoon and got a real sense of the island. We went through the rain forests, past some great beaches and to Nelson's Dockyard.

We also went to Shirley Heights on the Sunday evening, which is absolutly essential. St John's is an excellent town and there is a great bar called Hemmingways, which overlooks the main street.

My only regert is that we had to come home. We're still missing the place, the people and the pace of life. All I can say to those of you about to go is - you lucky things! and if you like cocktails you must try a Carribean Sea and a Galley Bay Special.

My Finance and I booked to go to Galley Bay 15 months ago for our honeymoon in September this year. Unfortunately we have been very disappointed as Galley bay has now closed for refurbishment, we only found out 2 days ago and we were meant to fly out in two weeks. We were offered alternative accommodation at Sandals in Antigua but as building work is happening there we have declined the alternative accommodation. Going to Lanzarote now for 1 week not quite the holiday we were after!!!!

We have just returned from spending two weeks in Galley Bay from 02 July to 16 July and loved every minute of it! We stayed in a superior beachfront room and this was fantastic. The caribbean was just a few feet away across a beautiful beach. We had no problems at all sleeping with either the noise of the sea or the tree frogs. The room had everything that was needed and was an ample size. The service in the hotel was first class, all the staff we encountered anywhere in the hotel were friendly and couldn't do enough to help. The food was excellent and there was always a good choice available at every meal. The food was all a la carte apart from Thursday evening which had a superb barbecue buffet. We found the hotel ideal as it was perfect for relaxing and yet if you wanted to do something more energetic the hotel staff were always willing to advise and arrange activities etc for you. We got married whilst we were there and once again the hotel and its staff were fantastic. The wedding gazebo was in a beautiful location and was decorated with our choice of flowers. Ernestine, our wedding co-ordinator, was brilliant and everything was done for us with no fuss, all we had to do was make sure we turned up on time! It was an amazing holiday and we would recommend Galley Bay and getting married at Galley Bay to anyone. It was our first time in the caribbean and we found the island beautiful and the people very friendly and welcoming.

Well, where do I start! We have just returned from a two week stay in Antigua. We did one week at Galley Bay, where we got married and then stayed at Sandals for our second week/honeymoon. The two resorts couldn't have been more different-with Galley Bay coming out on top by a large margin. Galley Bay is definately a five star resort and the brocheures cannot portray it's beauty-it really is paradise! We stayed in a superior beachfront room, which was literally on the beach-perfect location with your own sunbeds! The deluxe rooms weren't in such a good location but were slightly more spacious. We also had family staying in an Gaugain cottage, these were set back off the beach into the gardens but were quite private and had their own plunge pools! If I had a choice, I would upgrade only to a Superior Room, purely for the location-you can't beat it!

Other people on this website have complained about the noise of the sea and the tree frogs, but to be honest you get used to it and the sound of the sea is extremely relaxing to drift off to sleep. If you are that worried about it-bring earplugs-but all resorts in Antigua have the same issues with the tree frogs not just Galley Bay and it is something that is beyond their control!

The food was excellent-al a carte menu which changed every night at the seagrape restaurant. Only one buffet dinner, which was a BBQ and was actually quite tasty! Only problem at Breakfast and at Lunch were the little birds, which would peck at the sugar on your table but at least they weren't seaguls like at Sandals! The Gaugian restaurant was very romantic but they did not have enough space to seat a party of 7, which was disappointing but not the end of the world. The menu at this restaurant stayed the same every night. The service at both the restaurants and the bars, was excellent-the staff couldn't do enough for you. Champagne was even included of which we demolished about 4 bottles on the night of the wedding!

As for the actual wedding-totally stress free! All we had to do when we got there was decide on the flowers and cake, book hair appointments and go into St Johns to get the relevant paperwork sorted, which took about 10 mins. The day went perfectly, even though I had a phone call 2 hours before the wedding to say that they couldn't get my lillies, but they sorted it out and my bouquet was still beautiful.

Do not let anyone put you off staying at this resort-it really is heaven! We certainly hope to go back sometime in the future!

Before going to Antigua for our Honeymoon we read all the reviews on this website and decided Galley Bay looked the best place to stay - we were definitely not mistaken. There is not one single thing we would have changed about our holiday. All of the staff were brilliant - really friendly but efficient at the same time - any time we requested something it was delivered straight away. The location was incredible, the beach and sea were beautiful. The room was great, no glass on the windows was lovely - I can't think of a more relaxing sound than listening to the sea when you go to sleep. The food and drink were excellent, the alcohol measures are particularly generous! I think we only left the resort twice, just spent the rest of the time relaxing by the pool or on the beach. All in all, absolutely fantastic, definitely recommend it!
