My husband and I just returned from a glorious vacation at Galley Bay Resort. Everything was exactly as we wanted: rest and relaxation in a beautiful locale. Galley Bay itself looks like a postcard. The resort encompasses the entire cove (except for the far end where Giorgio Armani has a house!) so it is very private. The beautiful beach is perfect for walking and swimming. Everyday the turquoise water was calm and clear.
Our accommodations were the Beachfront Premium and were literally steps from the water. Our second story room was incredibly spacious with a soaring cathedral ceiling. The HUGE bathroom had his and her showers and a soaking tub. The step down living room opened up to a balcony with a great ocean view.
We did not have a single disappointing meal during our entire stay. The three restaurants each offer a different ambiance and style of cuisine. It did not matter where we had dinner because we loved the food at all three restaurants. If you want to dine in Ismays or Gauguin (the more intimate restaurants) make sure to make reservations after breakfast because they tend to fill up fast. The Caribbean Buffet at The Pavillion was excellent and should not be missed. There was also a band every single night--which is something I have not seen at other resorts we have been to. The nightly music definitely adds to the ambiance of the resort. We ended most evenings sipping cocktails after dinner on the verandah overlooking the ocean---with calypso music in the background.
There is really no reason to leave Galley Bay at all, but if you want an excursion I highly recommend the ziplining through the rainforest. The area of the island where Fig Tree Road runs through is so lush and beautiful that you feel as if you are in the Amazon! My husband and I did the Ultimate Zipline/Rope Course Adventure and had a blast. The day sail on the "Excellence",however, we could have done without. A 30 minute taxi ride to get on a crowded boat filled with cruise ship passengers is not our idea of a good time. It is a much better idea to go on one of the smaller catamarans that picks you up right at the resort. Also--a word of warning--stay away from Sean who trolls the beach! He is a buddy of the guy who runs the watersports program at Galley Bay ("Big Worm") and he is bad news. Sean approaches you on the beach and suggests excursions to you--and then if you don't take them--you never hear the end of it! He is NOT affiliated with the hotel. The watersports guy tries to get you to book with his friends, as well (he must get a commission). Avoid this entire scene and only book at the hotel activities desk! They put no pressure at all on you to do anything.
One final but very important note--you will never find a friendlier staff anywhere in the Caribbean. The attitude of the staff can make or break a vacation. We only had smiles and kindness during our entire stay. Galley Bay is a beautiful resort with wonderful food, but the incredible staff is what will guarantee our return.
