My wife and I spent a lot of time on this site, reading reviews and researching before we booked our "dream holiday" for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We came to the conclusion that Galley Bay would be best, wanting to be right by the sea, but only if we booked a Premium Beachfront Suite. This is because the other rooms have no glass in the windows, and with the rough crashing waves keeping you awake, and being eaten alive by bugs overnight, this would not be a dream at all. But with a/c etc it seemed ideal.
We didnt take a risk on some sort of free upgrade, or a special deal for our Silver, but paid top price to specifically stay in one of these rooms. This was confirmed in writing - and following a cocked-up transfer from the airport we duly arrived...
After we had booked in, the receptionist told us quite casually that we could not have a Premium Beachfront Suite as they were overbooked. We obviously explained why we had booked and paid for one of these rooms, but the best she could do would be to move us the following day. Not acceptable. So eventually the General Manager was summoned (we declined the invitation to go and find him in his office), and heated conversations ensued, but the his best offer was not to charge us for the room (ha-ha seeing as we wernt getting it anyway), and move us the following afternoon. Not acceptable - we wanted the room we had booked in advance and paid for. I called the local tour rep, who was completely useless and didnt want to get involved. Things were going downhill fast, so I called Thomas Cook Signature in the UK, with whom we had booked to see if they could sort the situation out. They were absolute Diamonds! They promised to call back in 20 minutes (and did); they found a comparable / better hotel, with similar or better a/c beachfront suite, and arranged for us to stay there for the 2 weeks, but with the option to come back to Galley Bay if we preferred once a PBS room was available. So we headed off to Carlisle Bay, in a taxi that TCS had arranged half an hour later.
Having seen Galley Bay briefly and having taken a tour round it whilst waiting for the taxi, having seen the rather tatty rooms, having seen the large waves crashing onto the beach, having had a very unhappy and uncaring reception etc, Galley Bay is simply not in the same league as Carlisle Bay - not even close! Simple decision, we stayed at Carlisle Bay for the 2 weeks and it was wonderful (did a review for that if interested). We would not consider ever returning to Galley Bay, and would certainly not recommend it at all.

My husband and I stayed at Galley Bay within the last year and were not real impressed by anything. They claim it is a 5-6 star and I beg to know WHY?? It lacked in services (we could not get clean towels until late in the day) and the rooms were just OK (we stayed in an ocean front deluxe, big deal) I would not recommend this resort at the rates they are asking and if you are dumb enough to pay it good luck!! All I can say is HAWKSBILL!!

My wife and I spent eight days at Galey bay in early February. The only two problems we had were that it rained more thanis customary -- nothing the resort can do about that -- and that the deluxe beachfront suit we had resrved was not available our first night. The staff did deal with that given us a complete refund for that whole day and many apologies. seeing as we had arrived late in the day anyway that was fine with us. We were moved promptly the next day.

Now I am a extremely picky travler. We always change rooms and I have high expectations. GB lived up to them. The room was amazing. the beach great, though a little rough for water sports I like it that way because it is fun to play in the waves. Go on in even if the red flag is up -- if you can swim you are safe. The beach was really clean and wonderful to lie out on, felt like nobody was there.

The food was much better than we have ever had at an all includive and rivaled many really good resteraunts. The fact that it is all al la carte for all moves really helps. We esepcially liked the gaugain for dinner and i think we ate the roti at lunch almost every day at the sea grape. Mike the resteraunt manager is great too and responsive. If you want more food or a snack -- just ask.

The staff overall could not be friendler or more responsive. They are one of the best reasons to go. We did a day-long private boat tour with sean who walks up an down the beach. It was a ton of fun.

We will go back for sure.

We just returned from Galley Bay Resort, we stayed in the Deluxe Beachfront room and had a very nice vacation. The weather was a bit unsettled with strong winds that could make it cool when you were out of the sun. Our room was right on the beach and quite comfortable. As others have mentioned, the noise from the ocean is quite loud at night. It didn't bother us but if you are sensitive to noise, you should upgrade to the Premium Beachfront room as those rooms have glass in the windows. Galley Bay is a very quiet resort with few activities (reading is the primary activity) but well kept and with very friendly staff. We did not consider this a five star resort, more like a four star. If Galley Bay wants to be considered a five star resort they need to improve on the little touches, such as room furnishings, maybe adding room service, improved mini-bar selections in the rooms etc... The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. With respect to the food, we found it to be acceptable - not spectacular. The menu remains the same with daily specials offered to give the guests more options. We were disappointed with the Gaugin restaurant. This is the restaurant that you must make reservations for but the menu never changes. We went two nights and were surprised that it was the same menu. Wines and other drinks were of good quality and we especially enjoyed the champagne offered, for our pre-dinner drinks. There is entertainment each night but it ends about 11:00 p.m. - this is not a nightlife resort. The staff were well-trained and very happy to assist - maybe not quickly but who cares - you're supposed to be on a relaxing vacation. Kudos to Natasha, Keirann, Stuart and our taxi driver JoJo. If you want a very quiet resort with no children, Galley Bay should suit you. Note: The ocean is very strong at Galley Bay so unless you are a good swimmer you will probably need to use the pool.
We also did a tour on Jolly Charter - private sailboat - although we enjoyed the trip, we felt is was over-priced. The full day charter (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) including drinks and lunch was $350US. The half day would have been better, but is also quite expensive.
We would recommend a trip to Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights - both are worth seeing and the BBQ at Shirley Heights, on Sundays, is excellent.

We just spent 2 relaxing weeks at Galley Bay. The resort is tucked away in its own bay. The beach is very clean (swept daily). We had a beachfront room a very short walk away from the restaurant and bars. Food, prepared by Andrew "Stan" Baxter and his staff was excellent (lots of grilled fresh fish, optional lobster). The staff are all very friendly and helpful as well as being relaxed and good humoured. The surf was a little rough during our stay but all in all an excellent holiday to wind down. St Johns is 15 min by taxi.
