My wife and I spent a lot of time on this site, reading reviews and researching before we booked our "dream holiday" for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We came to the conclusion that Galley Bay would be best, wanting to be right by the sea, but only if we booked a Premium Beachfront Suite. This is because the other rooms have no glass in the windows, and with the rough crashing waves keeping you awake, and being eaten alive by bugs overnight, this would not be a dream at all. But with a/c etc it seemed ideal.
We didnt take a risk on some sort of free upgrade, or a special deal for our Silver, but paid top price to specifically stay in one of these rooms. This was confirmed in writing - and following a cocked-up transfer from the airport we duly arrived...
After we had booked in, the receptionist told us quite casually that we could not have a Premium Beachfront Suite as they were overbooked. We obviously explained why we had booked and paid for one of these rooms, but the best she could do would be to move us the following day. Not acceptable. So eventually the General Manager was summoned (we declined the invitation to go and find him in his office), and heated conversations ensued, but the his best offer was not to charge us for the room (ha-ha seeing as we wernt getting it anyway), and move us the following afternoon. Not acceptable - we wanted the room we had booked in advance and paid for. I called the local tour rep, who was completely useless and didnt want to get involved. Things were going downhill fast, so I called Thomas Cook Signature in the UK, with whom we had booked to see if they could sort the situation out. They were absolute Diamonds! They promised to call back in 20 minutes (and did); they found a comparable / better hotel, with similar or better a/c beachfront suite, and arranged for us to stay there for the 2 weeks, but with the option to come back to Galley Bay if we preferred once a PBS room was available. So we headed off to Carlisle Bay, in a taxi that TCS had arranged half an hour later.
Having seen Galley Bay briefly and having taken a tour round it whilst waiting for the taxi, having seen the rather tatty rooms, having seen the large waves crashing onto the beach, having had a very unhappy and uncaring reception etc, Galley Bay is simply not in the same league as Carlisle Bay - not even close! Simple decision, we stayed at Carlisle Bay for the 2 weeks and it was wonderful (did a review for that if interested). We would not consider ever returning to Galley Bay, and would certainly not recommend it at all.
