There are no words to describe how incredible Galley Bay is, but I'm going to try. My wife and I chose Galley Bay after a lot of hunting looking for the perfect honeymoon. I can gladly report that we found it and we will be returning when it becomes possible for us to go again.
The moment we arrived, we were wisked away with rum punches in hand to our Premium suite, an upgrade from what we originally booked. A bottle of champagne awaited us in the room and the rest of the week has been a complete blur of happiness and relaxed bliss.
A lot of people comment that Galley Bay isn't really luxurious. I disagree, it's unpretentious, laid back, simple luxury without any fuss and muss. If your looking for fussy and stuffy atmosphere, look elsewhere. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous, the liquors are top shelf and poured freely and liberally, the food is what you'd expect at any mid to high end dining establishment in the United States beautifully prepared and presented, and it's all included in the price of your stay. It's not the greatest meals that I've had but it certainly exceeded my expectations, all of the meals are tasty, some did border on exquisite. Think about it though, you get to have a plated hot breakfast at 7 AM with lots of options including pancakes, french toast to die for, lots of fun egg dishes, plus a full continental spread, move onto a three course lunch, have drinks at the bar, then have tea time at 4, hors doeuvres at 6, another three course dinner with wine service at 7 and then drink the rest of the night away. That's a lot of food and drink available to you, so the price almost becomes a bargain when you start to factor it all in. I have to say I enjoyed dining at Seagrape the most, Ismay is trying to do upscale island cuisine and Gauguin had an Asian influence in their food, but I'm of the opinion that when you start to gussy up that sort of food, it's never as good as the authentic versions of it, but it was still tasty none the less. I enjoyed the French/Euro take that the Seagrape did with their foods the most, especially the dishes that used duck and beef. Something about the beef down there just makes killer meals.
One end of the beach is all reef and beautiful to snorkel in but hard to just enjoy a dip because of the rough sea floor and rougher waves, but the otherside is just heaven, clear cool waters, the perfect way to cool off after baking in the sun. The watersports guys were great, they taught me how to use the catamaran and when I flipped it over once, they came to my rescue very quickly and without a single hint of regret of making them work hard to save me.
The staff in general were just amazing, especially Matt at Seagrape who always remembered us and greeted us warmly at dinner or even when we just passed by, and Heather, who nicknamed me Mr Susie after the hot sauce of the Antigua which I couldn't get enough of at lunch.
We went into Saint John twice, the Quays are nice for shopping, the vendors can be a little pushy if your the only one around, liquor and tobacco is really cheap which is nice if you drink and/or smoke, but even going away from the tourist areas, I never felt at anytime in danger or afraid for my or my wife's safety.
Wednesday at Galley Bay is BBQ night with a whole roasted pig which was spectacular, Tuesday is a cocktail party with artists and jewelers coming in to sell their wares, every night there was entertainment from a band.
The Spa was just amazing. We had a complimentary treatment and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
So what are the downsides if any? The no seeums are a pain in the neck bug, but if you spray up you'll be fine. I used a picaridin based insect repellent and it worked wonders down there. The service at meals can be slow, but what's the rush in the first place? If you do have a place to be, give yourself extra time for meals. When i went it was pretty hot and humid but that's coming from someone who now lives in Boston.
When you arrive at Galley Bay, they say "Welcome Home" and when you leave they don't say good bye but rather "See you again". The fact that 80 percent of people who visit Galley Bay return, many on a regular basis, is a testament to this resort and it's people. I personally cannot wait to go back.
