“Why?Why?Why?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

I have just returned from the Galey Bay Resort today 13th May so I am slightly perplexed at two recent reviews that appear to be written at the same time that we were there.
Sorry people but the weather is outwith the control of the management - live with it.
To call this resort a "Caribbean Benidorm" is extremely unfair. I have been in many very good All Inclusive Couples Only Resorts and this resort is up there with the best of them.

I did have a small issue with not being able to lock my safe at the start of my vacation and reported the issue on the first day, by the mid morning of the second day after anoither vphone call my safe was still not lockable so I then spoke directly to the Resident Manager "Gregory" who could not have been more apologetic, after my call the safe was repaired and working within 30 minutes.

I must also challenge the statement "lot of Scots propping up the bar shouting the odds" when I was there I never witnessed any of this such behaviour and although I am Scottish I did not prop up the bar as my wife is a smoker and smoking is not allowed at the bar so we sat at tables every night. I may suggest if you want peace, tranquility and romance then perhaps buy a tent and go and sit on top of a hill.

The food is of a very good quality in the Seagrape and there are many different choices on the menu and the Caribbean BBQ on the Thursday night was excellent.
We used the Barefoot Cafe every lunch time and there is a good choice of snacks that you can order
Many cocktails are available as part of the AI package and all spirits are well known brands.

As in many other reports we could not praise the staff highly enough, every body is willing to spend time talking and getting to know the guests.

We spent most of our time round the pool area and never had any problems getting sunbeds and the area is immaculate. The Pool is a Green /Grey Colour to make sure it fits in with the surroundings, it would look rather silly if a white or blue water coloured pool was sitting in the middle of this lovely setting

If I had one slight moan it would be the quality of the Beach Sunbeds, which are extremely uncomfortable if spending a lot of time on them, suggest going for a better design.
Would I return to this resort, most certainly.

Room Tip: Superior Seafront Villas upstairs are very good, but if wet the stairs can be a bit slippery.

Overall we had an excellent time at Galley Bay and would return. The beach is lovely, well kept. We stayed in a beach front premium suite on the ground floor, which suited us because you could walk out the door right on to the beach. The people were friendly and helpful. The food was good, the breakfast and lunch menus didn't change, dinner varied slightly and always offered a beef, chicken or fish dish. We only ate at the sea grape or gaugin. Dinner at the gaugin was excellent the food was good, the location is excellent eating right next to the ocean and the service is top notch (Stuart was excellent each time we ate there). The spa is very good, Beatrice was superb. All the hostesses at the sea grape were great. Bring bug spray and don't be afraid to ask for what you want. This resort is for people who want to rest and relax and don't need to be pampered at every turn, it never felt crowded and the sense of seclusion was excellent.

We just returned from a week at Galley Bay. We are new to Vacations in the sun and GB met our every expectation. The staff were very attentive. They are not speedy but always pleasant. We had a superior room and were steps from the most beautiful beach. The weather was rainy some days but that made it easier to kick back and read a good book. The food does become as bit same-old after a week. We recommend the island-inspired dishes. If you are looking for quiet spot (no conga lines or children) Galley Bay is perfect. Finally, the number of returning guests and the way that they are treated --like royalty -- speaks to the quality and nature of this resort.

We can't understand how this resort has so many positive reviews – based on our experience it is seriously overrated. This was the 7th holiday my wife and I have had in Antigua, so we know what other resorts are like. On this occasion we decided to 'push the boat out' and stay at a higher quality resort. We choose Galley Bay because it is classed as 4½ star, is adults only and had many good reviews. However, it FELL FAR SHORT OF OUR EXPECTATIONS.

We stayed for 10 days and had tried to book a Superior Beachfront apartment but none were available. So we settled for a Gauguin Cottage with a written request for a Superior Beachfront if one became available. On arrival, which itself was a chaotic & disorganised affair, there was no mention of our request. (Even though we had only just arrived the staff were more interested in discussing our departure arrangements - which basically involved agreeing to a $100 charge to use the resort facilities after mid day on the day of departure). So I raised the issue of our room request and was told that this would have to be referred to the manager (why had this not been done prior to our arrival?). Despite making a further enquiry at 'customer services' the following day we never heard anything from anybody. THIS IS NOT 3 STAR SERVICE, LET ALONE 4½ STAR !!

The resort itself is in a lovely setting on an excellent beach (apart from the prevailing wind & strong waves - the beach was actually closed for 2 of our 10 days) with beautiful gardens. That said the operation, and in some parts the condition, of the resort leave a lot to be desired. Much of the resort, particularly the 'communal' areas such as restaurants, appear 'tired and worn'. The swimming pool is a dirty green/grey colour and is 'fed' by a very dated artificial stone waterfall arrangement. The bathroom in our cottage was very well used and in serious need of refurbishment.

Food at the 2 'standard' restaurants, Seagrape & Gauguin, was nothing special. Although the menus read very well the actual food was really pretty awful and, during the 10 days became very 'samey'. Service was extremely variable - the shortest time in which we were served was 2 minutes, the longest was nearly 30 minutes.

Staff, generally, were polite and had obviously been trained to say 'all the right things' but that was about the extent of customer service. The exceptions were the staff in the Teepee bar and watersports who went out of their way to be helpful.

This resort appears to be living on, what must be, its past reputation. In our experience Galley Bay is definitely not 4½ star for accommodation, food or service. There are much better hotels/resorts in Antigua for the same price, or cheaper ones that are equally as good. Galley Bay is a resort that appears to promise a lot but, apart from its location, fails to deliver.

We are here on our honeymoon we are staying in the luxury beachfront suite on the upper level. and how disappointed are we......very! The food is terrible and if you have dietary requirements do not come here. I requested a fruit smoothie for breakfast, two mornings no problem, but the third was far too much trouble, stating if i had one every one would.......how much is this all costing again?

As for the weather, Out of five days......which feels more like five years......it has rained all but one day. And there is not a lot to do when it's raining. All the areas you would like to go to are separate so brollies are needed everywhere. On the up side it's warm!

The resort is far from elegant or romantic. A lot of Scots propping up the bar shouting the odds kills any thought of romance. The decor is old dark and clumpy looking. The floor tiles in our room where grimy around the edges. The coffee maker was of really bad design so coffee leaked out of the lid when pouring. The bed was very hard and the pillows very uncomfortable, the bedding was one sheet and a thin throw. Some nights it was so cold we had to use towels as blankets

The evening entertainment is lame to say the least, Carbbean night had a due playing a guitar and singing for about half an hour. If you are a vegetarian be prepared to go hungry or eat salad because that's all there is for none meat eaters.

The island as a whole is dirty, garbage dumped all around, floating in the docks, on the road side etc. in the town we where harassed endlessly which made a shopping trip very unpleasant

On the upside the beach was clean and pretty although it was on a steep incline. Some of the staff where smiley and friendly, a lot I thought where surly.

The spa was excellent and the therapist was brilliant one of the best treatments I have ever had.

We are regular travellers to the Caribbean, mainly St Lucia, Grenada and the Virgin Islands are the most frequent of our recent holidays so know what to expect normally in the WI. But we would never come to Antigua again. Very dissappointing and on such an important holiday too.

Dear Jarmaqui -

As always, we greatly value the feedback from our guests and take their comments very seriously. It is our goal to deliver a memorable and relaxing vacation experience with stellar service.

The vast majority of guests who share information with us through online forums and guest surveys continuously rate Galley Bay as one of their best vacations ever and account for our very high repeat factor.

We are sorry to hear that you were disapponted with the food. Please know that our award winning, UK-trained Executive Chef has been with us for many years, and remains to this day. We pride ourseleves on providing guests with an excellent Caribbean holiday experience, which includes offering excellent food choices and a variety of world-class dining options.

Our main restaurant, the Sea Grape, offers beachfront dining with distinct Caribbean flare. Our breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are carefully planned, and are designed to offer a wide range of cuisine options that include both local and international favorites.

In recent years, we have significantly expanded our restaurant service to provide guests with dining experiences that are unique to Galley Bay. This includes our very popular Gauguin Restaurant, where guests can enjoy delicious meals in a South Pacific inspired thatched roof setting; Ismay’s Restaurant, with upscale dining and amazing views of the Caribbean Sea; and our newest addition, the Barefoot Beach Grill, offering lighter, casual fare in the relaxed ambiance of our beach and freshwater swimming pool with its delightful waterfall feature. Each dining venue is complemented by excellent service from our very friendly, and professionally trained staff—most of whom have been with us at Galley Bay for years, and are loved by our guests.

We have reviewed our guest comment cards and customer service reports, and we received very high marks for our dining and bar service this year. We understand that dining is subjective, and everyone has their preferences, which is why we work so hard to provide excellent menu selections, varied dining venues, and terrific service.

Our guests return year after year and are greeted warmly by our staff who typically remember our guests by name ensuring that they keep returning!

Antigua is a fantastic island for a very full, authentic Caribbean holiday experience…and Galley Bay provides the perfect setting for your island retreat.

Again, we greatly appreciate your business, and the fact that you took the time to provide us with your thoughts. We look forward to having you as our guest in the near future, and to meeting and exceeding all of your expectations going forward.

Our visit to Galley Bay 20th April 2013.We chose Galley Bay on recommendation by our travel agents Premier Travel in Seaford East Sussex who have been excellent in helping us celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary with this trip.
Right from the greeting at the resort with the rum punch to the sad farewells at the end the staff were always pleasant and helpful. The food and drinks are of a very good standard. We had a premium beach front room which was more than we expected in the way of space and comfort. We both agreed that this was the best holiday we have ever had and really felt quite depressed at leaving. We would highly recommend this place to anyone. We would love to return one day.
I would also add that some negative comments that are placed on trip advisor are not to be taken seriously. We did not find anything to complain about throughout the whole of our stay.

My wife and I traveled to Galley Bay over Easter for a week. Beautiful resort and island. The staff is outstanding and very helpful. We had a Premier beachfront suite which was very nice and just steps from the beach.
The three restaraunts were very good with entertainment every night. Beach is beautiful and of course the water was too. We will definitely go back.
