Just returned from a week at Galley Bay Spa and Hotel after some research particularly on Trip Advisor. The resort completely matched the positive reviews on this site and I am really struggling to understand the negative reviews that I read - I keep thinking that they must have stayed at a different resort.
The hotel is a solid 4 / 4.5 star as advertised. Location is fantastic with what effectively is a private beach, 3 restaurants plus a grill area, main bar plus a bar at each of the restaurant locations. Rooms are clean and large (we stayed in a Premium Beach Front Suite with wireless access, #75), in fact the bathroom (with his and hers sinks and showers) is almost too big, bedroom area plus a step down into lounge area. Tea, coffee etc plus sink and fridge. The suites are in blocks of four with two up and two down and I would advise trying to obtain a downstairs suite as the patio leads straight out onto the beach.
Food wise, very good with lots of variety. Seagrape is the main restaurant (breakfast, lunch, dinner) plus afternoon tea and other snacks late afternoon. Wine by the glass as part of the package or purchase from a reasonable wine list. Gaugin seemed to be similar food to Seagrape but individual gazebos so a different setting. Ismay's is the fine dining restaurant with an additional cover charge ($35 ahead I think). Food and service here was excellent and worth the additional cost.
Service overall was good and I didn't experience any real problems (service may have been a little slow at times but you had to think about it to realise). I tipped a little during my stay but it did not seem to make an appreciable difference as the service was consistent.
All drinks were label ('premium') brands.
Picking up on a couple of the negative points that I read before we went:
Mini Bar - this is stocked on arrival with a couple of beers, coke and sprite. If you want to have it refilled then there is a cost per item. We did this and it turned up in a couple of hours. Think that some of the advertising I have seen implied a free mini bar as this is an AI resort which is not the case. No biggy from my perspective.
Room Service - there is none (that I could find) which does seem a little odd for this type of resort.
Water - it is safe to drink so there is none provide in your room. Can be purchased at the on site shop for a couple of dollars per bottle. Again, a little odd from my perspective that it is not provided on a daily basis.
Insects - yes there are some and they do bite! Take repellant and use liberally!
Overall, this is a fantastic resort and deserves it rating.
