We stayed at Galley Bay for 1 week from 3rd Dec 07 . . . What can I say it was amazing. We were there on our honeymoon and couldnt have wished for more.
We arrived with all the trimmings mentioned in the previous reviews
. . rum punch etc. We were then taken (clutching said strong rum punch!) to our room and WOW feeling emotional any way from having just
got married I cried the moment I walked in . . . The room was fabulous. We stayed in a ground floor premium beachfront suite which had just been built and it was beautiful. A huge bathroom with a bath big enough for 2! Double shower, his and hers sinks. (the AC was excellent too) The view from the bed was fabulous and we would wake up early and have a coffee (fresh coffee avaible too in your room) overlooking the ocean listening to it crashing on the beach (which by the way is a fabulous sound and in no way too loud as in previous reports) The room was also spotlessly clean. We were given a couple of pics of us on our wedding day to take with us by friends and on seeing these the lady who cleaned our room surrounded them with fresh flowers every day . . . this is just one of many special touches that go with Galley Bay.
The food was outstanding I cant understand where NatsUk from the review below ate???? The food was A la Carte and there was a huge choice. The Gaugin restraunt was our favourite, the atmosphere was amazing (very romantic) with each table set under its own individual thatched gazebo right by the ocean. We tended to have lunch and dinner
there, you do have to book but if you go to reception on your way to breakfast you wont have any problems getting a table. Breakfast was slow but hey youre in the carribean! We would just recommend that if you have to go out on a trip etc then just eat from the buffet rather than order from the menu. It is well worth the wait however, as again the food is all cooked fresh and is great (eggs manhatten was our favourite: Poached eggs on an english muffin with smoked salmon and holandaise sauce . . mmmmm)
In relation to the staff we found them to be polite and helpful but they didnt have the personality of the teams at other carribean islands. We stayed at Palm Island (Galley bays sister hotel in The Grenadines) for 10 days after staying at GB and found their staff to be much more relaxed, still efficient however. Its isnt a criticism we just enjoy interaction with the staff and didnt seem to experience this at Galley bay except with Heather the restaurent manager who was lovely! nothing was too much trouble.
Re the sandflies we didnt sustain one bite and we sat on the beach all
the time (ie we didnt sit by the pool) we might just have been lucky!?
The ocean was very rough but my husband went swimming most days you just have to be aware of where the rocks are! the beach was so quiet and there was always a bed available. The pool was quite crowded and very small for the size of the hotel . . as they are building more rooms this will become a problem in light of the rough sea. (re the building work going on, we had building right behind us and heard nothing! so please dont worry it is lovely and quiet)
I dont want to waffle too much more just to say one thing we didnt like was the live entertainment in the main restaurent we found it too
loud for while you were eating. We struggled at times to hear eachother talking (and no we arent old I am 31 and my husband is 42) which we found a bit annoying (we were in holiday mode by then!) but this isnt the case at the Gauguin.
This is the place for a relaxed. romantic, quiet holiday enjoying fabulous food and drink, wildlife . . humming birds, pelicans, mongoose are abundant! and sorry for those who may be offended but it was lovely having no children at the resort. Please go to Galley Bay it is worth EVERY penny!
