AWFUL, DREADFUL, These are the two words and there are many more that come to mind when we consider our 'stay' at Galley Bay.
Firstly the greeting at the desk was indifferent, not towels and a five minute wait for a cooling drink. After much confusionover buggys and who will drive, we were taken to our 'superior' room. On arrival at the resort, we were not shown around apart from the guy pointing to the beach. We then had to assist/carry our own bags to our room. Five star service this was not.
On arrival to the room we were quickly shown the fantastic beach view at the back of the room, which was great but turning to look at the room, it was disgrace. Now we are very fortunate to travel only five start or above and this room was barley tow stars. It was dirty, outdated, small and certainly not five star accomodation.
On booking we were offered a ground or second floor room, only to be told by the resort managment that there were no second floor rooms. A quick walk of the resort showed that indeed there were and these had windows! Our room had none, just mesh and blinds, great for Mozzy parties!!
so, of course we complained that the room was not as booked and was not acceptable. The management reaction was pretty much one of 'tough $hit'. After 1 hour and 30 minutes we were moved to a larger a room which was barley better but we thought that we give this place a go, after all its was a long way from home, London and we had paid a lot of money.
We enjoyed a nice dinner the first evening and were fooled into thinking this would not be bad after all. Alas breakfast the next day in a darkened an humid 'canteen' overlooking the sea was not a delight. Surly service, twenty minute wait to receiev the wrong order. This was ongoing in through breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tip: do not leave your table to get a drink or bread as your untouched meal will be cleared away, the only quick service made. How people can report that the service, food ambience etc. is fanstastic is beyond us. Compare this to the Banyan Tree, Phuket, The Oberi, Mauritius and other such hotels and this place is nowhere and certainly not five star.
Room service and housekeeping was virtually nil in activity. We waitied two days for extra pillows and blankets. Ordering drinks to restock the already low in stock fridge was pretty much a waste of time.
Our loungers were both broken on arrival and were never replaced pr repaired despite three requests.
Bar service was very poor with staff happy to chat among themselves rather than serve the clients.
We approached the management about the various problems and were never offered an apology, rather it was the case that 'this was most unsual, we will look into it etc.'.
On our third day we were so upset with the experience that we decided to leave and book into the Mediterranean Village at Sandals, which is really fice star and makes this place look lucky to get one star.
We informed the management who had a shrug of the shoulders attitude. In light of the events we asked that they provide a car to Sandals and to our total astonsihment, they refused. This was the icing on the cake.
On the day we left I handed and letter to the Duty Manager who assured me that the Manager would see this and reply. I assume it was thrown as to date I have not had the courtesey of a reply. I would love for them to read this and reply via this means if they cannot be bothered to write.
If you are thinking of going to Antigua, think twice on this resort. You will have more fun and value for money going to Sandals or another resort as this place is not as described in the brochures.
