We have just returned from 10 days at the Galley bay resort. We chose this hotel because of the Tripadvisor reviews and its position as the #1 hotel for Antigua (when we booked). The staff were very efficient and polite from the minute we stepped out of the taxi from the airport till the time we departed. Everyone greeted us no matter what time of day and whatever they were doing from gardeners and maids to restaurant and bar staff. We never witnessed any of the poor service we’ve seen at other Caribbean all-inclusive resorts or the difficulty in getting a second glass of wine as some earlier guests have reported. In fact the reverse is true in our experience, sometimes the staff wouldn’t leave us alone, topping up any half filled glass of wine, water or cup of coffee. Clearly the result of the American management.

The beach and gardens around the resort are generally very well looked after, however it has to be said the lagoon behind the main complex did have a lot of floating green algae around its edges and the un-made up service road with rain filled pot-holes did slightly spoil an otherwise pristine resort.

We stayed in one of the Premium Beachfront Suites, which in hind sight turned out to be a smart move. The Gauguin Cottages and Superior Beachfront Rooms looked fairly small and only had louvered glass windows, which is not a good idea – more about that later.

If you decide to go and your budget can stretch, my top tip would be to stay in either a Deluxe or Premium ground floor room. Then you’ll have direct access from room to patio then straight onto the sand. The beach was very good and never crowded, at times we were the only ones there and I never saw more and about 20 people spread over a half-mile stretch of sand. Equally the pool area was very pleasant and again very quiet. There were never more than 3 or 4 in the pool at any one time and sometimes I was on my own.

Although we did try the Gauguin restaurant, we mostly dined at the Seagrape as it was closer to the evening entertainment. Service at both was extremely good with the Gauguin coming out tops. Birds at the dining table were never a problem at this resort, they exist but not in the predatory way we’ve seen at other places.

The whole resort is very quiet and relaxing and ideal for couples wanting a relaxing holiday. There is no Reggae blaring from speakers in every palm tree and as it’s adults only you didn’t have to suffer the Brit families enjoying themselves in the pool with the proverbial blow-up football. Come on, you know who you are!!

All in all a very good all-inclusive Caribbean resort, which I would have no problem in recommending, however from a totally personal point of view there were a few things I thought took the shine off an otherwise top resort. The sand isn’t white as described and shown in the pictures, it’s your standard yellow and the food had way too much garlic in it for my taste. The premium room’s so called wet-bar was a fridge with a couple of bottles/cans of local beer, soda and water. I was expecting a Sandal’s type concierge room bar with a range of full size bottles of spirits, red and white wine, beer, fruit juices and Champagne and my final observation is that you will get bitten by the bugs. There are everywhere including sand flies on the beach, which even the local vendors where complaining about.

  • Liked — Comfortable bed with a view of the sea, huge bathroom with double basin and double shower.
  • Disliked — So called Wet bar was nothing more than a fridge and a few cans of soda.

This is not a cheap place to book but once you get there you will see that it is worth the money! Like other reviewers, we found the hotel to be first class and the staff friendly and helpful. The food was superb in both restaurants, however we preferred the Sea Grape as it seemed to offer more choice, a different menu every night and a varied choice of dishes. We got upgraded to a Premier suite and it was wonderful, right on the beach with the sea only a few yards away. We did find the sea a little rough but once we got use to it, we were ok and saw no signs of jelly fish! We had glass in the windows but could still hear the sea which was relaxing, and as for mosquito's, yes there were plenty, but the hotel sprayed the grounds at least 3 times whilst we were there (we stayed for a week) and we had bug spray in our room, just make sure you have a good repellant on you! The gym was small but well equipped and the spa was lovely and relaxing, the prices are not too bad, they are on par with the prices in the UK. What makes this hotel really special though are the little things, the choice of wines, the food, the attention you get, you never had to wait for your glass to be re-filled, and the free internet access. We would definately stay here again.

I have to say, using Trip Advisor to review locations prior to booking has been wonderful. As with anything, it is always a 50/50 shot as everyone has their own likes and dislikes. We wanted to go to Antigua and this is how we found the Galley Bay Resorts. It is a bit pricey but we were sold on the fact it was a place to go where you didn't have to do anything if you didn't want. I know you can go anywhere and not do anything, but sometimes it is too loud, crowded and/or busy. We wanted a totally relaxing vacation. They were so right. We love our stay here. We thought about going to the Sandal's in Antigua but are so happy we stayed at the Galley Bay. It was calm, tranquil and relaxing. It is that hidden romantic hide away.

From the moment we arrived, the staff was friendly and accommodating to us. We got to our room, which was not posh by any means for the price, but we were literally on the beach. We were in the Superior Beach front units and we were so happy we went with them. The resorts offered some non motorized water sports you could do if you wanted but not much else which was awesome.

The food was excellent in both restaurants. The Seagrape (main restaurant) is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We never had to wait more than a few minutes to be seated. We were there just before the peak season started but they only have like under 100 units total so you are looking at about 200 people. No kids at this resort (only allowed during Christmas holiday). The Gauguin Restaurant offers lunch and dinner. You need to make reservations for dinner in this one and there is a dress code in both restaurants for dinner. You need to make sure you bring bug repellent with you because the mosquito do come out at night. It is like $18 US dollars in the gift shop.

A few things you should know; the water is beautiful and very Caribbean blue however there is a big drop as you enter the ocean. Even if you are looking at the water as you are entering, you still won't see it. Next, there were a lot of jelly fish. We got stung 3 times. And they did not have anything posted anywhere on the resort about it. They really need to. Lastly, if you are on the hot blooded side, the long pants at dinner could be a pain. My husband was sweating and it was uncomfortable for him. No air conditioned areas to eat in. That seemed to be a big issue for most of the people we meet there.

We did a circumnavigation cruise and we had a blast. It literally pulls right up to the beach for you to enter and drops you off at the same place. We went with the Wadadli Cats which is booked right thru the guest services for you. It picked us up just before 9:00 am and dropped us off at 3:45 pm. We went snorkeling, had lunch and drinks, jammed to the reggae music, they put the sails up for a while, we stopped at another beach to swim and then they brought us back. If you are looking for something to do, I would recommend it. We went into St. John's to shop one morning. Cabs rides can be expensive so make the most of the time when you are out and about. Definitely buy your gifts from there. The resort gift shop prices are ridiculous.

So, if you are looking for a place to go from the ocean to the pool, to the bar to the restaurant and back, this is a place I would recommend. We would definitely go back!

We booked this trip thru Liberty Travel. Got the best deal for our money.

  • Liked — We were on the beach!
  • Disliked — The jelly fish (note posted anywhere on the resort to be aware of them) and the fact all men had to wear long pants to dinner with no air conditioned restaurants and it was hot

I have just returned from an outstanding 6 day stay at the Galley Bay Resort. Stayed in the deluxe beachfront #59 with a front porch garden view and a patio with the beach a few feet away. I found the accomodations as great as advertised with large spacious bathroom and shower.
The staff demonstrated superior customer service on all levels ( friendly and went out of their way to serve). I truly felt pampered.
Food was wonderful with beautiful presentations, great taste, and a nice variety. The musical entertainment each evening was splendid. I wholeheartedly recommend this resort and will definitely stay there again . It was additionally adults only which enhanced the experience.

Ok, first impressions, it was amazing. We were greeted by a fruit or rum punch at Reception. Perfect after a flight with BMI! Staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for you.
We stayed in G15, a Gauguin Cottage. We couldn't fault it. It was absolutely amazing and even though we couldve had a room upgrade, we didn't want to take it. It had a splash pool and it just made our holiday! However, the second to last day, the chemicals had been topped up a little too much and the water bleached my bikini and gave my husband a nasty ear infection!!! The manager spoke to us and gave us the money for my bikini but it was totally ruined and i'm still gutted ;( Our phone never worked so we couldn't call anyone, I suppose it's not a bad thing because calls to England are SO expensive, but what would we do in an emergency? We did report it on the second day but still didnt work after that either. Very annoying.
The restaurants are very nice, especially the privacy you got in the Gauguin Restaurant and we always found the staff in there much nicer than the Sea Grape. The service did leave alot to be desired at times and the staff were either really happy or really rude and miserable. They cocked up our orders several times and never once did we get an apology. If the staff forget something off your order or you want another drink and you ask for it, they go all huffy. Ok so it might be a bit of a generalisation but this did happen quite a few times to us. We aren't rude people and were always quite grateful to the staff. There is a good selection of vegetarian food and if you don't fancy it, theyt can make something to suit your needs.
If you like wildlife, youre coming to the right place. We loved it! There were lots of Mongoose, Crabs (Hermit), ducks and lizards. We even saw a crane too!
The watersports were good and are all non motorised. We went kayaking and snorkelling. There were little jellyfish about and we both got stung once but they were only tiny and nothing to worry about. I would recommend snorkelling around the rocks because thats where the fish seem to linger. We saw Nemo there!!!
We took a day trip to St Johns, something I would highly recommend because it's so cheap, especially for cigs and alcohol. Be warned that the airport is more expensive!!! $19 for 200 Marlboro Lights but $28 in the Airport!!!
Overall we had a fantastic time, it was our Honeymoon and we paid alot of money to go there. I would go back to Antigua because its beautiful but I wouldn't go back to Galley Bay.
