“Return to Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2011

We have just returned from Sandals Grande Antigua and had the most wonderful holiday. We are returning guests and were really treated like royalty. Our room, one the Honeymoon Oceanview Suites with Butler was gorgeous, just steps away from the white sandy beach.

The pool on the Med side is where most people gather during the day and I have to say that this year there was an awful lot of beds being reserved very early in the morning, people throwing other guests property off beds that had been reserved and claiming them for themselves and even taking the beds reserved by Butlers. If you don’t pay the extra for a Butler and the perks that they can give, don’t take it out on those that do pay for them. Admittedly the resort was full to capacity but why do people have to be so greedy and selfish that they take or disregard other people’s property. Fortunately for us we had a cabana, however that also didn’t stop some people coming in and taking the beds belonging to the cabana on a couple of occasions (some people would steal the nose off your face if they thought they would get away with it). The swim up bar is good fun with Gavin and Althea brilliant cocktail blenders, wicked spicy Bloody Marys.

We tried all the restaurants and loved them all, especially OK Corral, Nigel, the chef cooks the best ribs ever. Eleanor’s was another favourite with its excellent Caribbean menu. Stacey the restaurant manager is so helpful and works very hard to ensure you have a fabulous meal, the lobster is exquisite. Mario’s is a lovely Italian restaurant with a really good menu and lovely ambience. Kimonos Japanese restaurant is great fun and gives you an opportunity to meet other guests and there is one chef cooking for a table of 10 guests. The Pizza restaurant is great and Claudine who works there is one of the most customer committed people I have ever met, when she helps out on cabana duty she is constantly checking you have everything you need. Beach BBQ is good fun and the food mouth watering. The only disappointment for us was that there was no ice-cream stand this year.

Without a doubt having a Butler is the way to go, Wendel and Julian were brilliant, both couldn’t do enough for us and were always surprising us with little snacks or running a romantic bubble bath and even having champagne on ice waiting for our return of an evening, we loved the two of them. The Butler Manager Sandeep was also extremely helpful and went out of his way to ensure we had everything we required.

The Signature Guest dinner was, as always very enjoyable, I think SAG puts a lot more effort into this occasion than some of the other resorts we have been too. Theresianne in the Sales office joined our table and was very mindful that everyone had a good time; she is always so helpful and dedicated to her guests.

Nightlife – Traditional night was very entertaining, as was Karaoke in the pub, however I think some of the entertainment is a little tired now i.e. Couples game etc. I would like to maybe see a Quiz Night in the pub and a return of the fabulous Soul band that used to play outside Cricketers a couple of nights a week or maybe some “swing”. Having said that it is still enjoyable and quite honestly you don’t want many late nights.

With regard to the mosquito sprayers, this is a great help to those who would otherwise get eaten alive by the little monsters. The Resort guide in you room does warn you of the spray being carried out so everyone should be aware of the process and it only actually takes a few minutes.

Finally I would recommend this resort to anyone, it really is very pretty and guarantees and wonderfully relaxing holiday, in my opinion it is hard to beat and we shall certainly be returning.

Sorry for the lengthy review, but hopefully someone will find it helpful

Just came back and ready to go again. My husband and I renewed our vows on the beach on the 16th of February and it was wonderful, the resort couldn't do enough for you. Over all our trip was great, great food, service and drinks. The resort is wonderful, I strongly recommend staying in the low rise area vs. the high rise. Overall the staff could not do enough for you and we are planning our next vacation there, this time staying 10 days vs. 7 days as that wasn't enough time to enjoy everything. You can't go wrong at this resort.

We chose Sandals Antigua for our honeymoon in February 2011 and it was exquisite. The gardens are carefully tended and beautiful tropical flowers are blooming all over the island and the Sandals property. The beach was very close to our room (literally less than 50 feet), and we had butler service, which was awesome. Room service was fast and the food is excellent.

We tried out all of the restaurants and each really is a different experience. No matter what kind of food you're in the mood for, they offer it at Sandals!

On Friday night, locals put on a cultural exhibition with dancers on stilts and people in costume (we're from the New Orleans area, so we were right at home!).

They do typically have night activities on the property, but they end around 10:30. The Cricketer's Pub is open until 2 but we barely made it past 1 A.M. on any of the nights because our days were so packed (and we are in our 20s, so going to bed early is not the norm for us!). We did consider going out into town one night, but it was just so effortless to stay on the property at night that we didn't.

Tip: Book your tours through the hotel and not with someone on the beach. Each of the vendors who walk up and down the beach will ask you at least once a day if you want to do their excursion/use their jet ski/buy their jewelry, etc., but they take no for an answer and will leave you alone until the next day. It was definitely not enough to affect my opinion of that beautiful and relaxing beach!

Quick 15 minute ride from the airport to the main lobby where we were greeted with Sandals own signature champagne. You can't just have one!
Resort took the liberty of upgrading our room and leaving a fruit platter and birthday card for us! Nice touch.
Room was a little worn, but large and the bed was very comfortable.
Food was excellent, pools were great. Can't wait to get back!

Just returned from a one week stay during week of Feb. 13 - 19 2011. Most reviewers have said it all...a beautiful and scenic resort with great food and many activities, on land and on the water. A word of caution however, for future travelers....at approx. 5:30 p.m. every day, the resort blasts the grounds with a cloud of mosquito spray....a few guys walking around with blowers and wearing gas masks....the cloud envelopes the entire grounds and sends guests running for cover. I don't understand how Sandals can be permitted to use these chemicals...I have never seen such chemical blasts at any other resort that I have stayed at. Does anyone have further info on this?

My husband and I went to Sandals Antigua for my best friends wedding. The wedding was great - Sandals did a nice job and handled our group very well. It was fun traveling with so many people - 22 altogether - and the grounds and facilities are definitely big enough to be with a group that big, both for privacy and if you wanted to hang out with everyone all at once. The grounds are very pretty and the beach was nice. That being said, I'm not sure I would go back to any Sandals after staying there. The atmosphere is *very* groupie (they will try to get you to participate in games when you are chilling out by the pool and there are literally people who's job is "funmaker" - not joking!) and caters obviously to Americans. There is absolutely nothing authentic or local about it - other than you are in a tropical place and can get food/drinks with coconut in it. I like to stay in nice places while on vacation - but Sandals is just flavorless in terms of culture. But it really does come down to personal preference. If you want to go on a vacation where you don't have to think about anything, don't have to venture out to find a meal, can sit and do nothing, everything is right there for you and there is an alcoholic beverage waiting for you at just about any time of day - than Sandals is it! But if you like a little more adventure or local flavor -than maybe look elsewhere.

My fiancee and I took a short vacation to Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa to see if we want to be married here. Can't wait until we come back for the wedding ceremony in 2012. This place is paradise. On the Sandals website, this place looks beautiful. I had read the reviews on this site and I was a little nervous about the bad reviews, but then there were also some really good reviews. Some of the reviews are very detailed, but for mine I just want to highlight things I think might be helpful:
1. Be polite to the staff and they will be more than polite to you. The staff was friendly. I did not experience rudeness or inattentiveness. And the concierge Danesha was fantastic, she should be the model for good customer service.
2. It's a warm climate, there are mosquitoes, bring repellent.
3. The rooms and resort look just like the website photos, however, it's no longer brand new so there is some wear on the furniture, but really, I didn't care, we were outside as much as possible.
4. The food was good. If you have concierge level service ask them to make reservations at the restaurants that require them. I recommend Eleanor's.
5. Men bring closed-toed shoes and long dress pants in addition to a shirt with a collar, some of the restaurants have a dress code - we ended up going into town to buy long pants which was great trip.
6. Relax, the Caribbean is not America, it is more laid back - relax, relate, release.
7. There is a "exit tax", when we went it was $28 USD. I saw this somewhere else and noticed it was not commonly advertised. If I hadn't read the reviews I would have been unaware.
