We were at Sandals Antigua from Aug. 13-16, 2007 (the week prior at St. Thomas Ritz Carlton, see my other review)...and adults only AI is the ONLY way to go!!
This is our 4th year in a row going to Beaches and/or Sandals.
Tip: if you have a chance to sign up for the signature guest program- accept it at the hotel b/c they give you 10,000 bonus points which = $250 off your next Sandals/Beaches trip (we told lots of first timers on their honeymoon to do this).
Note: As of Aug. 16, 2007 the new part "Mediterranean Village" is still under construction (despite what they tell you). We were lucky and stayed in the "older" part so we didn't get noise, but alot of guests were complaining that Sandals lied to them (right up until the week prior to their departure), stating that construction was done. This is my biggest problem w/ Sandals (as we experienced that w/ MoBay, see my review)
Arrival at airport: customs takes approx. 1/2 hr & Sandals has a counter where you sign in (not as nice as other airports where there's actually a lounge for Sandals guests). Our opinion is that Antigua (so far) seems the worst for airport stuff.
Leaving is worse. Takes over 2 hrs to get thru the airport. lines- barely any workers there (we flew AA). No A/C at the airport. Few little souveneir and duty free stores.
The rooms: Note that Sandals is not known for updating or maintaining their rooms. You have to remember that overall it's a great value b/c of all the food/drinks/activities included. But if you paid full price for suites, etc. you MAY be disappointed.
The older part of the resort is a bit older looking; we booked our stay was in a basic room b/c if you're a sig. guest, they "upgrade" your room for free.
Note: we got the free room upgrade to the Rondoval Suite (which is apparently really nice), but the room was still standard/basic. Old showers/torn shower curtains. No A/C in the bathroom part. Nothing to brag about, but we were only there to shower/sleep. So it didn't bother us (unless we would've paid for this upgrade, so not worth it). We had "consierge" service; which was kind of pointless. First, anyone at the hotel or guest services can help you. Second, every time we called, no answer. The night before we left, no departure notice given, morning of, had to call to get luggage taken away.
I do feel (having gone to other Sandals/Beaches and other AI resorts) that we should let travellers know what kind of room you'd be getting. I personally feel it's better to book a cheaper room there (we met a couple who booked week 1 in the standard deluxe and week 2 in the rondoval suite (where we stayed) and week 2 cost them $2,000 more....NOT worth it. Save the money for souveneirs, excursions, etc. if you want.
Pools/Beach: They have a few little ones. Our Rondoval Suite had the "plunge pool" that they so beautifully portray in their magazine. Again, not worth it. It's very small, dirty, not maintained, and we used it daily just to rinse off the sand from our feet.
The nice pool is the new one by the Meditteranean Village. This is the best Sandals pool we've been in b/c you could actually go in the water and it wasn't freezing cold, like all the other Beaches/Sandals resorts. Has a swim up bar, cabannas, etc. Very nice.
The "real pool" is the ocean...oh my, so warm and beautiful. The sand is like walking on powdered silk. Very comparable to Turks & Caicos beaches. Dickenson Bay is voted 4th best beach in the world. It was pretty amazing. Very clean.
The beach is just steps away from the restaurants and they have jewelry/shirt vendors.
Snorkeling, hobie cats, aqua-trikes, etc. all watersports are included and free. We did 'em all. So much fun.
The new Meditteranean Village part: Now this, they can call 5 stars (once they finish construction- apparently pple were woken up at 8am and it ran til 4pm EVERY DAY- we weren't affected in the "older part")
It's all suites, ocean view. Very nice, new modern (we took a tour of the room), but there are no special ammenities (ie, new fitness center, private access, etc.). It costs about $250/nite more than the deluxe in the older part. So you have to weigh out how important that is to you since everyone at the resort has access to all the same restaurants/ammenities.
It has a nice new "shopping area" w/ their gift store and boutiques. Very nice items, and surprisingly, the souveneirs are reasonably priced. But check out the beach vendors first, b4 buying at the store.
For returning sig. guest members, you get 10% off $100 purchase.
Food: Pretty good; buffets, restaurants. Kimono's was yummy and while we didn't eat at the sushi place downstairs, we heard multiple rave reviews. Next time we'll try it ;-) Disappointed that they don't have crab/lobster at any of the restaurants.
Marios (indoor w/ A/C) & Eleanors (outside): Both excellent, gourmet-like food. Much better than the typical Sandals menus. Bayside (outside) was "okay", basic hotel food.
For Sig. Guest dinner: YUCK! Why would they serve the worst, dried out, nasty food to their returnees?! No lobster, crab or anything good. Alot of pple. didn't like the food (they do give U a free bottle of rum) and it was actually our worst meal that week. Next time we won't be going to the dinner.
Fitness room: Bad, no A/C, it's open air, old equipment. They have a water cooler there.
Departure lounge- we didn't see one
Entertainment: They had some kind of dancing/singing etc. type activity every night.
Sorry, we didn't leave the resort so we can't give tips on the off-premise stuff.
Overall- I'd give it 4.5 stars:
It's very nice, romantic, mellow. If you're a total "partyer", you may not like it as much as MoBay.
This is not a 5 star resort (none of the Sandals/Beaches are). It is a VERY GOOD VALUE, when you look at what you pay vs. a non-AI trip (see my St. Thomas review which was our trip right before coming to Antigua).
We paid $438/nite for deluxe accomodations and got free upgrade to the suite. (Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas was approx. the same, maybe like $50 less/nite, but doesn't inc. anything).
Sandals is, well, typical Sandals. Great value, but mgt. needs to spend money updating rooms and fitness center. The staff is mostly nice, but sometimes you do have to make multiple requests. It's a small price to pay to get such a great value.
We will be returning to this Sandals.
The lowest ratings would be rooms (2 stars) and fitness center (1 star). The highest ratings would be their beach (5 stars), snorkelling/watersports (5 stars), Mario's (5 stars for both lunch/dinner), Eleanors (4 stars dinner). There are I think 9 total restaurants (courtyard bistro for burgers, etc.), pizza place, type stuff for "quickie" meals/snacks.
Any ??? feel free to contact me. Happy Travels!!
