What can we say about Sandals Antigua...? Overall, the island is beautiful and the people are friendly. The resort?
We arrived at the airport and Sandals had a representative there that arranged a transfer to the resort. And the adventure begins...
Once we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly staff. We were escorted up to the Piano Bar for what turned out to be the first of two orientations. We soon found out that, other than your room, the Piano Bar is the only other place at the Resort that has A/C. And it was VERY humid. Also, why waste one's time with another "orientation" the next day? Oh, by the way, the Piano Bar is only open at night and is SMOKE FILLED. If you don't care to get Lung Cancer, avoid the Piano Bar.
Orientation - The orientation, which we thought would be about the activities and amenities offered at the Resort, turned out to be a sales pitch for Spa treatments and outside vendors. Maybe not so bad, as we signed up for an excellent catamaran trip around the island.
Room - Our room was very clean and spacious. We stayed in the 800 block of the Anthurium building, bottom floor. The down side was that the pool was right in front of the room and we had to keep the drapes drawn for privacy. The A/C was marginal and the remote was written in hieroglyphics. We never did completely figure it out. After housekeeping would visit our room, they were so kind as to turn off the A/C and the ceiling fan. No problem, it was only about 100 degrees and 99.5 % humidity in there. Well, the use of the Sauna was included. We just didn't realized it was actually OUR room! Overall the room was the best feature. Always clean. Included is a well-stocked in-room bar (which they will stock to your liking). The bed is huge and comfy / cozy. Another note, if you want to take a hot shower before dinner, do so before about 6:00, as all the restaurants open at 6:30pm. Else you're trying to shower while everyone else is.
There is a really nice amenities kit that is included in your stay. However, if you were to run out of any of the items (shampoo, conditioner, aloe gel, lotion) you would have to purchase another kit at $15. We found the kit to be enough to last approximately 1 week. Another option would be to go into St. Johns, which would cost about $10 for the taxi ride.
Concierge Service - Don't waste your money. We asked them to rent us a car, they told us to go to the car rental desk. We asked them to arrange the catamaran tour, the told us to go to the tour desk. We asked them to exchange US dollars into EC dollars, they told us to go to the front desk. At orientation (on Sept 10) we were told that our departure arrangement would be posted on a board in the courtyard. By the 16th, the day before we were to leave on a very early flight, the board was still dated from Sept 9th! We then, reluctantly, asked them about checkout. We were told to go to the Customer Relations desk. We finally asked them what exactly their purpose was as the concierge, since they hadn't done anything more than direct us to everyone else. Without explanation of their purpose, their surly response was that we would recieve a notice under our door by 8pm. (They close their office at 5pm.) So we went to the customer relations desk and were told we would have the information by 6pm, then a few minutes later, were told we would have it by 7pm. Such is the way at Sandals! Where nothing is as it appears. $200 is a lot to pay for someone to tell you where to go! (And we mean that in the nicest possible way!)
Food and drinks - Saturday night is buffet dinner at the Bayside. The food was good overall. Presentation of the feast was pleasant. Monday is a beach BBQ. Also buffet style and yummy. Breakfast and lunch are buffet only at the Bayside and are basically the same each day, which becomes boring after a while. The fruit in general was tasteless. The cheese was good as was most of the other offerings. If you do decide to select something that is uncovered, we suggest you pick from the bottom as the flies have visited the top (eeewww!). The service is slow and don't expect a refill of your coffee without asking.
We found all the other restaurants very good. Non-buffet nights at the Bayside were also good. We ate there twice from choice. The OK Corral has bench type seating which we liked for cozy side-by-side dining. Kimono's was nice for socializing. WARNING WILL ROBINSON! Avoid the Courtyard grill. Quickly renamed the Crapyard Grill. Featuring the house specialty - Pizza Jerky.
If you enjoy a good drink, do like we did: go into town and buy your own. These people couldn't make a Margarita if their life depended on it!
It was nice to be able to eat at the resort. The time of year we visited is the off season and the island basically shuts down. Few restaurants catering to tourist palates are open.
Scheduled activities - We never actually saw any of the daytime ones happening. To see if these were smoke and mirrors, we decided to participate in one called "Learn About Antigua". No one from Sandals showed up. After we asked, Mr. Norris Morris Harris, the Entertainment Director came over and told us the time was posted wrong, (even though it was on the board and in the bulletin handed out the day before) but gave us a lovey pair of "mini sandals" for our inconvenience. He actually looked stunned that someone showed up!
Sandals points are given for various reasons. Dress alike, win at volleyball, dress up for whatever theme they are presenting that night, etc. and, supposedly, you receive points. The points were never explained. We never found out what you could get (if anything) with your points. So what's the "point"?
In fairness to Sandals, we did not spend all day, every day at the resort. Maybe they waited until they saw us leave before they did any of these things.
Outside activities - We like to explore rather than lounge at the pool or bake at the beach. So we rented a car for a few days and drove the "Roads of Antigua". What an experience! We're from the US, so driving on the left side of the road was a little frightening at first, especially with the way the locals drive, but we made our way around. What a way to see the real Antigua. We found a beautiful beach, Long Bay, which is said to be the most beautiful beach on the island. It truly is! We snorkeled there one day and found the water to be warm and clear. We saw a few different types of fish, but not too many. It was still the most wonderful experience.
We would recommend doing the Treasure Island Circumnav all-day trip. The cost was $200 per couple which included yummy food, drinks, and snokeling gear - the VERY loud music was free! The crew was very friendly and accommodating. The views of the island from the ocean were spectacular. Having rented a car a fews days before, it was a neat experience to see it from the other side.
Overall - We rated this as above average because one has to realize they are not in a wealthy country. The resort is very nice for where it is. They try their best to make it a 5 star resort, but lack continuity in the little things. It's definitely not 5 star, even for Antigua. In summary, it's a beautiful island, people are nice, water is warm, but the resort, in our opinion, is not as it is represented. We wouldn't necessarily stay there again, but we're not sorry we chose Sandals Antigua. It was worth a try!
