We stayed at the Sandals Grande Antigua on our honeymoon--and all in all--we had an amazing time. When we first arrived we were greeted with very friendly staff--that served us champagne immediately. However, our room wasnt ready when we arrived--and 45 minutes later--we actually got into our room. Another 30 minutes later--we hadnt received our luggage yet for our room--so my husband had to go down and get it himself.

As mentioned in previous reviews, there are two sections of the resort--the Caribbean (the older side of the resort) and the Meditteranean (being the newer resort). Although some may have not liked the Caribbean side, which is where we stayed, we loved it. Yes, it was older, but they forgot to mention that all of the rooms in this section look out over a pool right behind your room--and the beautiful ocean. The Med side of the resort only looks out onto a pool--the ocean is too far away to get a good view from there.

Although the Caribbean side of the resort is a few minutes away walking from the Med--I definitly wouldnt call it inconvenient for any events or anything going on at the other side of the resort. There are events all over the resort all day long--so no matter where you stay--you will have a great time.

The beach is beautiful--but remember--that it is a public beach--so you will get people coming up to you quite often wanting you to buy things from them. Everyone is very friendly--but it definitly is something to be aware of and accept before you go.

There are a lot of great day trips that they outsource to people while you are there. We didnt have a chance to go on any--but I was advised by a few other couples to not go on the trip to their neighbouring island, Barbuda, as it is an hour and a half boat ride away (one way only)--on rough seas--so about 20% of the passengers had sea sickness.

Food wise--everything was okay--nothing extraordinary. Kimonos, OK Corral and Eleanors (the 3 that you make reservations for) are by far the best for dinner, Marios is definitly the best for breakfast, and for lunch you have your option of a few different ones (Cricketers Pub, Pizzeria and Barefoot) which are all okay....Barefoot being our favourite one personally.

Also, be advised that when you leave the island, the process in the airport is painfully long. Airport security will go through every one of your bags before you check in with your airline--and then you have to go into another line to go through customs etc. It took us almost 3 hours to go through it all before we got to the departure lounge to wait for our flight home.

All in all--the island of Antigua is very beautiful, the staff were friendly, there are a lot of activities and things to do while you are there--and the weather was beautiful--and it made for a honeymoon to remember for a lifetime.

My husband I just returned from a week in Antigua at the Sandals resort. The resort was beautiful and had a variety of activities for everyone. We were married at the resort and had a good experience. We stayed on the Mediterranean side in an Ocieanview Suite.

Here are some pros and cons we found with the trip:

Pros:
-The room was beautiful and well maintained.
-The majority of the staff were pleasant upon checkin/checkout
-The evening bands and activities were well planned and always entertaining
-The food was fine - don't expect the best and you won't be let down
-The variety of activities was nice from pools to events to restaurants.
-The wedding was spectacular - they took care of everything and I couldn't have been less stressed through the entire event.
-The beach was clean and the water was beautiful.
-Security for the resort was all along the beach to make sure non-Sandals folks weren't on the resort property.

Cons:
-Another couple we checked in with were upgraded to a Penthouse suite, while we were not. It was odd in that they were just a dating couple, while we were at the resort to get married. We asked several times about an upgrade, but never received a response. It appeared that if you had stayed at a Sandals resort in the past, you would get an upgrade.
- Everybody runs on "island time" so don't get in a hurry. If you think you may be hungry - go ahead and order food because by the time you get it, you'll be hungry.
-The majority of the restaurants are outside so it can be hot when you eat. Marios, The Cricketer's and Kimonos were all inside and had air conditioning.
-You could only schedule reservations 48 hours in advance so if you forgot, you normally couldn't get into some of the restaurants, but there's always the buffet :).
-The ocean few we more of a palm tree view on the second floor.
-You have to talk to the right person to get what you request. Example, asking the room attendant to refill the room refrig will not work. That was fine; however, I thought maybe she could find the right person to call.
-A few calls were left unanswered. When you did get a hold of someone, they would often call you back. Sometimes they did and sometimes they did not.

Activities We Did:
-Rainforest Canopy Tour - AWESOME - I'm afraid of height, but loved the zipline. It was an awesome experience. If you go and aren't physically fit, do not sign up for the challenge course. The zip lines were great and relaxing, but the challenge course was after the ziplines and included nine different bridges and obstacles. I've never been so exhausted. We should have stopped after the ziplines.
-Shopping in St. Johns - we spent some time downtown shopping in the markets. I would compare the city to Tijuana. It wasn't very clean, but there were plenty of shops. The small markets were very tight and hot.
-Kayaking - we took one of the resort's kayaks out and had a blast. It's a free activity and worth it to get out in the bay.
-Spa/massages - we had a couples massage after our wedding and it was very nice. I'm not sure if it was worth the $270, but it was a great way to spend the afternoon. The spa staff were wonderful!
-Cabana - we rented a cabana by the main pool and really enjoyed the relaxing day. They provide you with breakfast and lunch and a cooler filled with your favorite beverages. The cost was around $100.
-Casino - don't expect much here, but we went several times. The place is EMPTY until about 8 or 9pm, and then is only about half full. They have blackjack, slots and Texas Hold 'em tournaments, but don't expect Vegas or Atlantic city.

Our recommendations:
-Kimonos - it was very nice and let you interact with other couples.
-Rent a cabana one day and let someone else take care of your evey need.
-Take advantage of the photographers that come around - we purchased many of the pictures that were taken by Sandals. We went every day and just kept a running group and purchased some the last day we were there. (what is really nice is they provide youwith the copyright information so you can copy them yourself when you get home).
-Take some bug spray or wipes with you. We put on bug spray in the evenings and weren't bothered, but other folks weren't quite prepared and were very uncomfortable.

Other Things You May Want to Know
-There are plenty of little lizards on the property, but they don't bother you at all - I hate bugs and wasn't bothered by them at all.
-The pools are open 24/7 so you can enjoy a swim anytime. We had many night swims which were very refreshing.
-We saw about 5-10 cats and a couple of dogs on the property. They live there and are very friendly.
-Make sure to use sunscreen. I got sun poisoning from just 45 minutes of unprotected sun exposure.

Everything about the resort was beautiful, the pool and beach were nice, the resteraunts were well designed and decorated, and the grounds were like walking through a garden. But be ready to wait long amounts of time for anything you want because the service staff is not in a rush. They are accomodating but it takes a good amount of time to get what you ask for, or to even get to ask what it is you would like. The food in the resteraunts is ok nothing is over the top amazing it was all edible but nothing that I would go back to if I was at home unless the prices were right. The staff at the main pool bar seemed to try to be helpful but unless your that guy that sits there all day they tend to look over you and it takes an average of 20 minutes to get a drink. The watersports people are fairly younger and age and proove it with their disorganization. All in all my wife and I had relaxing time but we were not blown away with this resort like we expected to be. This was our second time doing an all inclusive package (first was at the old Wyndham in Aruba)and the first time was so good that maybe we had too high of expectations for this one. So I guess you could say we were slightly disappointed but its my own fault for not researching ahead of time.

******(1)BEFORE YOU BOOK SANDALS: BE AWARE that there are 2 totally different sides of the resort. It is like night and day! There is the Caribbean side which is the original part of the resort. We went with another couple who stayed on this side and all I can say is that the rooms are just OK. My friends were told that they are in the process of being refurbished. The rooms look like a glorified motel room. Some people it wouldn't bother but my husband and I usually stay in the Ritz Carlton and I have to have a nice room,I would have been Miserable. There are no frills on the Caribbean side. The rooms are very basic. We stayed on the Mediterranean side which is the newest side built 3 years ago. I would have to say.....You definitely get what you pay for here. The couples we sat with at Kimonos were disappointed on the Caribbean side as well. The Mediterranean side is just so much more beautiful. The rooms are basically brand new , it is close to the pool and during the day is where pretty much all the action is. If you go to you tube and search Sandals Antigua you will be able to see the portofino suite in room 7105. All portofino suites, just so you know are on the 1st floor. We had a walk out with steps ,though I noticed some of the rooms on the end had a rail from preventing them to walk out this way. There are 7 floors in the towers. The more you pay the higher the floor, the bigger the room and access to butler service.

*****(2)Getting there and Back: You should really try and book a non stop flight. If you live in the New York area Either Continental or Delta airlines offers this out Newark. You would have to check JFK or La Guardia I'm not sure. The alternative is American Airlines with 2 stop overs. It wasn't horrible, but it made for a whole day of traveling.....

(3)*******Dining at Sandals:

Breakfast: My suggestion would be go to Mario's. It is nicer, and the food selection is better than Bayside. The Bayside is nice, the only problem is that it is an open restaurant and quite often the birds are flying in and landing on the buffet tables and eating the food.

Lunch: My suggestion would either be Barefoot which again has the same issue with the Birds, but not as bad as the bayside or the Pizzeria. I have to tell you, the pizza was pretty good.

Dinner: As soon as you get there make sure you make reservations Immediately for Kimono's(Japanese), Eleanor's(Caribbean), and the Ok Corral(Tex Mex)You can't make reservations at Mario's. Kimono's I think has the best food. Kimono's is also great because if you go there your first or second night you will meet other couples immediately. You will sit with four other couples.

(4)*****VIP Dress Attire for Men: You must bring with you dress pants and collared shirts. You are not allowed into Kimono's or Mario's for dinner without them. While we were in the restaurant we saw couples being turned away because the Husbands did not have long pants on.

(5)The Staff: My husband and I both found the entire staff very friendly and accommodating. They always had a smile on their face and always said hello.

(6)Gym: The gym was just a gym..... nothing over the top but still very useful. Their Cardio Machines consisted of about 8 life fitness treadmills, bicycles etc....They had a universal gym and a few pieces of Cybex equipment..........

(7)Casino-Seemed that mostly locals were there and not many people from Sandals. We were there 7 nights and went to the casino 3 times and it was consistenly empty. Not very impressive for a Casino......

(8)*******Day Of Departure*******- You should know that the day you are leaving Check Out is 11:00 AM. Your Bags are picked up outside your room at 10:00 AM.The shuttle back to the airport is either 11:30 or 12:00 noon.(It really doesn't count as a day at the resort) Then you sit in the airport for 2 hours.Try and eat before you go to the airport because there really is nothing but a "snack stand"
that sells pizza, cookies, muffins, hot dogs etc.........

(9)Would we return to Sandals Antigua? Absolutely, I would recommend this resort to anyone who wants to be in one of the most romantic resorts, but again it would have to be on the Mediterranean side.

My husband and I recently visited Sandals Grande Antigua, and were surprisingly disappointed. After reading all of the posts, here, I think that it’s a “hit-or-miss” with them. Some people had fabulous experiences, while others were as bad as ours. Let me start by saying that we are well traveled, but have never experienced an all-inclusive aside from a cruise. After everything we experienced, it will be our last.

CHECK IN – After traveling over 13 hours to get to the resort, we couldn’t wait to get to the hotel, check in, shower, and relax. We were hot, sweaty, tired, starving, and a little bit on the crabby side…but ready to start our vacation! Upon our arrival, we were quickly asked for our credit card and passports, and told to have a seat. That’s where we sat for the next 45 minutes!! We were offered champagne, of course, but felt it a bit unprofessional for them to ask for our CC and then leave us for close to an hour. Finally, we were approached by the Director of Guest Services, Sonya. She gave us back our CC and passports, and proceeded to tell us that due to overbooking, we were being downgraded from a Venetian Suite in the Mediterranean Village to a Portofino Suite. After 3 nights, we were welcome to pack up and move to a room that was a lever higher than what we actually booked (Monte Carlo), so she believed it balanced out. Additionally, she would “give us a refund” for the difference between the downgrade, and what we had booked. We reluctantly accepted, even though we booked this trip WELL in advance, and even called the day before to confirm our room.

OUR DEBACLE - After our three nights in the downgraded suite, we had to waste an entire morning packing up, and waiting to be moved to the new room. After a couple of hours, we were told to just go about our day (and let them move us). Later, we found our belongings (including our laptop) sitting in the hallway without any supervision. There was nobody in sight!! Anyone could have swiped my computer, or bags! I was furious. The people at the front desk were in the dark, and had no idea what was going on, so we had to bring our luggage down for them and ask that they be brought to our new room when it was ready. We spent the better part of the day waiting for the new room---unable to shower, nap, unpack, etc. A complete waste of a day. To top it off, an hour before checking out and heading home, we received a call from concierge telling us that we had a $260 credit on our account that we’d need to use at the gift shop (the credit was a result of Sonya’s $100 promise, and a refund from a botched pre-paid special meal, which I talk about later). I explained to them that not only was I expecting a REFUND AS PROMISED, and not credit, but also---they were giving me 1 hour to spend almost $300 at their GIFT SHOP, which sold sunblock and peanuts?!?!? In the end, after spending our last hour in Antigua dealing with this, we got $170 refunded (within 6-8 weeks no less), and had to forfeit the rest. I’ve never heard of such ridiculousness! We were downgraded, wasted an entire day dealing with moving/changing rooms, another hour dealing with their mess, and were not compensated in any way!!

THE ROOM– Very clean, and exactly what we expected. The shower was less than great (no water pressure), and one of the sinks backed up regularly, but other than that—the room was great!

THE FOOD – Terrible. You would think that with 9 restaurant options, and the all-you-can-eat perk, that anyone would be happy…but not only was the food cafeteria quality, but many restaurants closed early, or simply turned you away for any number of reasons (you cannot wear flip flops, and you cannot come anywhere near their 9:30pm closing time). Also, three of the restaurants required reservations, but you can only make them 48 hours in advance. Also, if you call after 9:30pm, chances are you are out of luck for the next two days. Kimonos was lots of fun, even though we were forgotten about after ordering dessert (it never made it to us). The Sushi place was great, as well. None of the other places were particularly great in atmosphere or service, let alone food. Menus are very limited, and portions are small. I ordered two entrees every night!!

THE SPA – Worst I’ve ever experienced. Not only are they overpriced, but the service was absolutely terrible! After checking in, my husband was dropped off at the men’s locker room, and I was dropped off in the women’s. Once we were in our robes, we had no idea where to go or what to do…we sort of wandered around until we saw each other, and then had a seat in an awkward sitting room that is in the middle of all the traffic. We were not given a tour of the facility, or told what amenities we had privileges to enjoy. After the massages—same story. We were left to find our way back to the locker room, gather our things and leave. The spas we are used to in California absolutely cater to your every whim. You get tours, offered beverages, urged to utilize the facilities, and pampered on a grand scale. This was more like a massage factory where they were trying their best to crank out as many visitors as possible.

THE GORUNDS – GORGEOUS.

THE MAIN POOL – FABULOUS (though there are limited umbrellas, and in the scorching July sun, this was a problem for me). The smaller pools – Not very inviting, and equivalent to a Motel 6 pool.

ENTERTAINMENT– Laughable/Ridiculous. The beach party was horrendous and a waste of time, the bands can use some help, and the Playmakers obviously don’t care to ensure you are enjoying yourself. They really need to come up with some new options. The Couples Game was fun, and the pool Olympics were the only enjoyable parts.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS – A month before our trip, I made arrangements for a romantic candlelight dinner on the beach, that Sandals advertises for $170.00USD, for my husband’s birthday. It includes dinner on the beach, white glove service, a rose, champagne, and a 4-course personalized meal. The day before our reservations, I called Concierge to ask them where we go, and what we need to do before the schedule dinner (we had not yet chosen our menu). She told us to just show up at a specific restaurant and they would take care of everything for us. That’s exactly what we did, and after a 15 minute wait, we were told that since we did not pick our menu, we’d be eating from one of the regular restaurant, Barefoot’s, menu. WHAT?!?! We JUST eat dinner at that very restaurant the night before, the food was terrible, and what was I paying $170 for? Barefoot’s menu is included in our all-inclusive package! No rose, no candles, no white-glove service, AND we were approached by a local to buy drugs mid-way through dinner. Very romantic!

THE SERVICE – The worst part. 70% of the Sandals employees seem very unhappy with their job. Example: On one occasion, we spent a good 20 minutes at the pizza counter waiting for one of the 3 employees behind it to acknowledge us in ANY way. This was a reoccurring atmosphere at almost all of the restaurants, bars, and amongst anyone that you’d try to get the attention of (front desk, concierge, tour desk, etc). Everyone says hello to you as you pass them on the grounds, but that’s the extent of the warmth from these people. We felt like more of a burden than anything else.
Sonya, the Director of Guest Services, was one of the most condescending people we’ve ever met. She spoke to us like we were children, and even though she downgraded us, made absolutely no effort to “make it right”. The few other times we’ve encountered being downgraded, the hotel Manager, or Dir of Guest Services have gone out of their way to make it up to us, be it offering spa credits, butler service for one night, or helped make special arrangements for an excursions. Sonya simply hung us out to dry, and treated us like idiots when we attempted to speak to her about it. She expressed multiple times that she hoped we didn’t think she was “cheating” us, but she didn’t know what else to do. When we expressed how disappointed we were, she offered us a comp’d day at any other Sandals resort in the future, even though we had already told her that we’d never stay at another Sandals again. The trip cost about $5k total. We spent last summer in Europe, sparing no expense, and spent about the same there. Needless to say, Europe was a much better vacation!

In the end, the service was terrible, the food and spa were just as bad, and our personal experience was horrible. Management made ZERO effort to help the situation, and in fact that was the worst part. We’ll never return.
