******(1)BEFORE YOU BOOK SANDALS: BE AWARE that there are 2 totally different sides of the resort. It is like night and day! There is the Caribbean side which is the original part of the resort. We went with another couple who stayed on this side and all I can say is that the rooms are just OK. My friends were told that they are in the process of being refurbished. The rooms look like a glorified motel room. Some people it wouldn't bother but my husband and I usually stay in the Ritz Carlton and I have to have a nice room,I would have been Miserable. There are no frills on the Caribbean side. The rooms are very basic. We stayed on the Mediterranean side which is the newest side built 3 years ago. I would have to say.....You definitely get what you pay for here. The couples we sat with at Kimonos were disappointed on the Caribbean side as well. The Mediterranean side is just so much more beautiful. The rooms are basically brand new , it is close to the pool and during the day is where pretty much all the action is. If you go to you tube and search Sandals Antigua you will be able to see the portofino suite in room 7105. All portofino suites, just so you know are on the 1st floor. We had a walk out with steps ,though I noticed some of the rooms on the end had a rail from preventing them to walk out this way. There are 7 floors in the towers. The more you pay the higher the floor, the bigger the room and access to butler service.
*****(2)Getting there and Back: You should really try and book a non stop flight. If you live in the New York area Either Continental or Delta airlines offers this out Newark. You would have to check JFK or La Guardia I'm not sure. The alternative is American Airlines with 2 stop overs. It wasn't horrible, but it made for a whole day of traveling.....
(3)*******Dining at Sandals:
Breakfast: My suggestion would be go to Mario's. It is nicer, and the food selection is better than Bayside. The Bayside is nice, the only problem is that it is an open restaurant and quite often the birds are flying in and landing on the buffet tables and eating the food.
Lunch: My suggestion would either be Barefoot which again has the same issue with the Birds, but not as bad as the bayside or the Pizzeria. I have to tell you, the pizza was pretty good.
Dinner: As soon as you get there make sure you make reservations Immediately for Kimono's(Japanese), Eleanor's(Caribbean), and the Ok Corral(Tex Mex)You can't make reservations at Mario's. Kimono's I think has the best food. Kimono's is also great because if you go there your first or second night you will meet other couples immediately. You will sit with four other couples.
(4)*****VIP Dress Attire for Men: You must bring with you dress pants and collared shirts. You are not allowed into Kimono's or Mario's for dinner without them. While we were in the restaurant we saw couples being turned away because the Husbands did not have long pants on.
(5)The Staff: My husband and I both found the entire staff very friendly and accommodating. They always had a smile on their face and always said hello.
(6)Gym: The gym was just a gym..... nothing over the top but still very useful. Their Cardio Machines consisted of about 8 life fitness treadmills, bicycles etc....They had a universal gym and a few pieces of Cybex equipment..........
(7)Casino-Seemed that mostly locals were there and not many people from Sandals. We were there 7 nights and went to the casino 3 times and it was consistenly empty. Not very impressive for a Casino......
(8)*******Day Of Departure*******- You should know that the day you are leaving Check Out is 11:00 AM. Your Bags are picked up outside your room at 10:00 AM.The shuttle back to the airport is either 11:30 or 12:00 noon.(It really doesn't count as a day at the resort) Then you sit in the airport for 2 hours.Try and eat before you go to the airport because there really is nothing but a "snack stand"
that sells pizza, cookies, muffins, hot dogs etc.........
(9)Would we return to Sandals Antigua? Absolutely, I would recommend this resort to anyone who wants to be in one of the most romantic resorts, but again it would have to be on the Mediterranean side.
