We stayed here from 8th Nov 2008 until 22nd Nov 2008.
This is not our first stay with Sandals but our first time to Sandals Antigua. It's very difficult not to compare all the resorts but this resort falls short of the standards of Negril and Whitehouse.
Rooms - We were upgraded to a honeymoon luxury concierge suite on arrival which we were grateful for. This was situated in the carribean village. After reading so many poor reviews on the carribean side we were worried. The room was located in the Anthurium Building. The room was large, clean and had a stocked mini bar. The room was kept clean throughout our trip however the bathroom could have done with some updating. Do remember to keep your doors closed at all times though because the resort is full of mosquitos who will eat you alive. We had our room sprayed several times and came back to a room full of dead cochroaches!! We were also invaded by ants!! Any maintenance issues were resolved within minutes!!
Restaurants - Kimonos is a fun place to eat and meet other guests as you all sit together around a grill (10 people). The food quality and service is good.
OK corral - Food is ok and service is reasonable.
Marios - The food is generally ok and service is hit and miss depending if the manager is there supervising or not. Our last night we ate there and were ignored for 25 minutes before we were even offered a glass of water!! Our starter arrived after an hour!! maybe they were just having a bad night but lots of people were complaining ( the usual manager wasn't there that night)
Bayside - don't eat the buffet here in the morning or lunchtime (go to marios). We sat by the buffet several days and watched the birds eating, walking and doing what birds do on all the food on the buffet table. The staff did nothing about this. (Big health risk). The evening is a different matter with good service and ok food. A special note goes to a waitress by the name of Coron - if you get her serving you you'll have a great night as she is a very good waitress!!!!
Barefoot - the service and food here is fine - it's a snack/ fast food restaurant in the day - A' la carte seafood at night.
Cricketers - don't bother eating there in the evening - there are far better places.
Eleanors - superb service, good food. the manager Jason runs a very tight ship here and it shows with the good quality of service!!! It's Carribean food, but if you're not sure about sauces etc they'll put them on the side.
Pizzeria - there were only 10 tables available and the waiters are extremely slow, but they were addressing this and increasing the size at the end of our stay.
The resort lacks a proper A' la carte option for lunch and relies on buffet's and snack food. i found this dissapointing compared to other resorts as i pay the extra money at Sandals to avoid buffets.
Make sure you make reservations early - they start on thursday afternoon - and you can reserve the whole week in advance - you won't be dissapointed that way.
There are plenty of pools around the resort however people reserve sunbeds very early in the morning with towels and sometimes don't even use them. We prefered the Carribean swim up pool bar which is more lively and had volleyball - aerobics etc. There are quieter pools elsewhere.
Drinks are definitely not watered down and they'll give you whatever you want (if they've got it).
The evening entertainment is good here - lots of different shows - check out the Scottish magician - very good!
The tours here are quite expensive and limited as it a small island ( thats to be expected - it's Antigua). We did a circum-navigation catamaran trip with Wadadli Cats. it's a good tour and the company is very proffessional - however it's very long - 8 hours in the sun!!! so bring sunblock - lots of it
The gym is quite well equipped for those who like to exercise.
On the whole the resort is very average for the price you are paying. We had a good time but some of the other Sandals resorts are far better when it comes to service and food quality as this area really lets them down at Antigua.
I hope we haven't made it sound too bad. We just feel that the other Sandals resorts were far better - and in most cases cheaper! If you've already booked - don't panic - you'll still have a great time. it's what you make of it.
