My new husband and I went on our honeymoon to the Sandals Grande Antigua Resort and Spa. We chose this location based on recommendations from friends and from the descriptions on the Sandals website. The resort was beautiful and the people working there were very friendly. However, my husband and I did encounter problems that made our stay not worth the money we paid.
We booked one of the rondovals with a private plunge pool. The room was wonderful and we absolutely loved having our own pool which we could enjoy if we did not feel up to being around a crowd of people. These lodgings were one of the most expensive on the resort, and rightfully so due to the amenities we received (2 private butlers, the pool, concierge service, etc.). We would not have minded paying this except for the fact that there was construction going on outside of our room during our entire stay. Our walkway was blocked and we had to walk through and around bushes to get where we needed to go. The men working on the walkways constantly peered over our privacy wall into the pool area, making me very uncomfortable and not at all relaxed, as I should have been on my honeymoon. The noise of the construction woke us up much earlier than we would have appreciated and it was bothersome when we tried to enjoy a quite lunch at our room.
While it was lovely to have our own pool, it was not cleaned regularly and we had to call at one point because it was too dirty to get into. We also had to call to have someone come and fix our pool because the electricity was shut off to it because of the construction taking place. When we called it took two hours before anyone even came to look at the pool, and then he disappeared for another hour and a half before coming back. It wasn't until we spoke to our butlers that this issue was resolved.
During our stay we booked the Lime Beach tour where we would snorkle along Cades Reef and enjoy a lunch on a private beach with live entertainment. The tour was spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed our day on the boat and in the water. However, on the checklist the resort gives you for things you will need for the tour, one of the items is water shoes. We went to the resort shop to purchase them and they were $13 and $15 dollars each. We hesitated and asked the women who worked at the shop if it was absolutely necessary to buy these. They told us we must buy them or we would not be allowed on the tour. So, trusting these women, we purchased the shoes for $28 total. On the day of the tour, we never used the shoes. We were provided with flippers for snorkeling. We never put the shoes on and we did not remove the tags. When we went to return them we were told we could only make an exchange. This was highly irritating but we found items we would like and made the exchange. The difference was a dollar. Rather than just excusing that and doing something to make it an even exchange, we were forced to give them the dollar to pay for yet more items we did not need, when we would have never made the initial purchase to begin with if it hadn't been for the women working in the store.
On our last day, we were told to be in the lobby by 11:30 so we would be taken to the airport. Our flight did not leave until 3:30 that afternoon and the airport was only a 15 minute drive from the resort. Rather than being allowed to enjoy the comfort of the resort and the refreshments offered there for an additional hour, we were pushed out the door and made to sit in an uncomfortable airport for 3 hours.
Before leaving I tried to lodge a formal complaint with one of the guest service managers at the resort. I wanted to tell them that in all, my husband and I enjoyed our stay, but we feel that we should be compensated in one way or another for the discomfort, agitation, and inconvenience we experienced of the course of our very expensive 10-day stay. However, I was told that every single manager of the resort was currently in a meeting and when they were done the desk clerk would send someone over to speak with me. After an hour passed, I asked if they were out of the meeting yet, and I was told no and to sit and wait. The desk clerk then sent our butler over to us to ask what our complaints were with him. I had specifically stated that we loved our butlers and they did a wonderful job, but that we had complaints with the resort as a whole. I never got to speak with anyone about our complaints.
Would I recommend this resort? Only if you don't mind construction and people giving you the brush off. It was an absolutely beautiful island and the majority of the people who worked there were lovely and amiable. However, the amount of money we spent left us feeling disappointed and as though we should be compensated for our troubles.
