As many other reviewers; I spent a few weeks before our Honeymoon constantly reading the reviews here, and feeling slightly nervous about some of the reviews of the Sandals Grande Antigua. Obviously, some people are more sensitive than others, and everyone has different opinions of "good" "great" and "amazing". I was determined to be as (mentally) critical as possible during my trip, so I could write an honest review for other Honeymooners. We got married on June 14th, arrived at Sandals on the 16th, and stayed for 10 days; leaving on the 26th.
We stayed in a Honeymoon Oceanview Suite in the large main building. A beautiful view of the ocean from our balcony greeted us every morning, and every evening when we came home from the beach. Our room was amazingly clean; and the housekeeping staff did a great job of re-stocking whatever we had drank out of the fridge or bar each day. The king sized 4 poster bed was super comfortable, the a/c was great, the 40" plasma tv, glass shower, whirlpool tub, and huge double sink area were added luxuries. On our first night when we returned from dinner, there was a breakfast menu to fill out and hang on the door for a complimentary honeymoon room service breakfast on your first full day; a very nice touch. It was great to have breakfast on the balcony. The room gets an A+ for sure.
One tip I would give would be to get the concierge service. You will meet him or her when they bring you to your room on the first day; call them that afternoon and book a few dinners. We had no problems getting to all of the restaurants; each of them more than once, in fact. We called Danesha back later in the week to make a second round of dinner reservations, and it worked out great; she was very friendly and helpful with all of our questions.
The grounds, pools, and beach are all really clean and very well manicured. My wife and I are more beach people than pool people, so we spent every day on the beach. One more tip: to get an umbrella on the beach you have to get up around 7am, and go down to the beach with your towels, otherwise the butlers will reserve them for their clients. I can't sit in the sun for 8 hours, so it was important for us to get one, and we easily did everyday. People are very respectful of the "towel reservation" placed on a beach chair under the umbrella you want to use, and when we returned to the beach around 10-10:30am, our things were right there.
We really enjoyed the food. They key is that there are so many places to eat you can bounce around a lot and not get sick of anything. If you like sushi; you have to find the sushi bar; no reservations required and it is popular; I think we ate dinner there 3 times. It is in the same building as Kimono's, which is also very good. We liked the OK Corral and Mario's for dinner as well; Mario's does an Italian buffet one night a week that is really good. OK Corral is tex-mex and has great fajitas and ribs. Eleanor's didn't blow us away, but the setting is really nice, we ate dinner there twice. We found Barefoot (menu) and Bayside (buffet) to be good for lunch, Mario's and Bayside for breakfast buffets, Crickiters Pub and the pizza place for snacks or appetizers to bring up to the room before dinner. I would describe the food overall as well above average, and if you like sushi, the sushi bar is amazing.
We did go scuba diving, went snorkeling a couple of times, and took out a Hobie Cat a few afternoons. There is plenty to do. We took the class to get us “resort certified” to dive, which I would totally recommend; the instructors are great. I would absolutely recommend booking the circumnavigation tour of the island on the Wadadli Cat catamaran. What a blast that was; for $100 US per person you get an 8 hour activity. Open bar, lunch served on an island, snorkeling, and an amazing ride! There are plenty of choices of activities you can book at the reservation desk. These cost extra, but are totally worth the experience. My wife hit the spa one day and said it was great, I’ll take her word for it as I’m not a massage guy. We went to the gym a few mornings before breakfast. I’d describe the gym as adequate. A bunch of treadmills and ellipticals, but a bit thin for free weights and machines. It is very clean and gets the job done, I suppose a Honeymoon isn’t for working out anyway!
I asked my wife last night; and neither of us can honestly think of one single thing we would change about the Sandals Grande Antigua. I would probably go here every year if they had a high end golf course; but I knew going in that there wasn’t one, so I wasn’t disappointed.
What an amazing place; I would recommend this resort for anyone looking for a once in a lifetime Honeymoon.
