After reading some of the posts here and elsewhere Janet & I were a bit nervous going to this resort. Here is what we found;
The resort
Is very much two resorts in one, the Caribbean side which is older more plush and really very "cozy" and the Mediterranean which is very much like Sandals Whitehouse, very new and modern with less flowers and trees. The Caribbean side the rooms are mostly one and two level houses or buildings whereas the Mediterranean side is three buildings two of which are 7 stories and one is 5 stories. The views from the upper floors are wonderful.
Check In
Janet & I booked the St. Tropez suite which is a concierge level suite. Upon check in we were greeted with the cold towels and champagne as we filled out or guest registration forms. The concierge area on this side is very large with lots of chairs and couches to sit at as they get prepared to escort you to your rooms. We arrived later than originally scheduled due to a flight cancellation from San Juan and a total change in flights. The process here was quick and complete in about ½ hour or less.
St. Tropez Suite
An absolutely stunning room located on the 7th floor with an amazing view. This room had a king size 4 poster bed, a large bureau with a 42” flat screen t.v (I think around 42”) in room stocked refrigerator as per the level. A sitting area at the far end of the room with 2 very comfortable chairs and coffee table, a desk next to the bed with all the resort information and phone, a large paddle fan, the “do not disturb” indicator located in the thermostat which turned on a small light by your door and an outstanding bath area. As you walk in from the bed area of the room you pass between to large marble/granite pillars which put you in the center of the bath area. Inside the bath area there are two wash stations one to the left and another to the right with marble/granite tops. To the right side further back in the bath areas was a large “rain shower” which was in the middle of the ceiling of the shower area, to the left side back in the bath area was the commode area. In the center between the commode and shower area was a large whirlpool bath. There is also a small balcony with two chairs, a table, and a laundry hanger.
Dinning
Janet & I visited Mario’s, Eleanor’s, Kimono’s, Cricketers, Bayside, O K Corral, Bell Napoli Pizzeria, and Barefoot by the Sea. What has been written about getting reservations early is true; you do need to book your reservations two days in advance to those that require a reservation. Mario’s is an Italian flare restaurant, I had the steak here and Janet had a pork dinner. My dinner was good but not great and Janet’s dinner was a bit tough here, we probably should have gone with the Italian food here….lol but it was still a pretty good meal. Eleanor’s is more a traditional restaurant serving steak, sea food and the like. We ate here for our 30th anniversary dinner and I must say a good choice for this night, I had steak….yes again (the steak had a coffee sauce on top) and Janet had a shrimp dinner both which were very good and the location of this restaurant is right on the water. Kimono’s obviously is the Japanese restaurant which I typically do not go to. Here I was amazingly surprised, our chef George was outstanding. We had the stir fry veggies, steak, shrimp, rice and fish through this meal. Now I am not a fish eater AT ALL and one of the portions that came out I had to ask Janet if this was chicken or fish (I heard her tell the guests next to her she was telling me chicken) so reluctantly I tried it, WOW it was awesome to the point I ate all of it. It was mahi mahi which was perfect as was the rest of the meal. This was one of our best meals at the resort. We didn’t go but were told the sushi bar here was outstanding. Cricketers, this is an English style pub with fantastic nachos. Janet had a pork dinner here she said was very good and I don’t remember what I ate here. Bayside, as stated by its name it too is located near the water. The Bayside is a buffet style restaurant for breakfast, lunch an dinner. The buffet’s always had plenty of choices for all meals with stations for cooked to order omelets, eggs, and the like. There was always pork or roast beef every dinner time as well as buffet styled hot and cold foods and salads. OK Corral, a tex-mex type of restaurant, the food here was very good as well, from nachos and chicken fingers to chili and steak. Janet ordered the combo plate which she said was terrific and I had……you guessed it…steak which was very good. We also had the salad here too and a very good chili too. Bella Napoli Pizzeria, what was said about this pizza plaza Janet & I didn’t run into. First the pizzeria is a brick oven pizzeria which means the pizzas are cooked over open flame not in a pizza oven. We had two very good pizzas here and waited approximately 20 minutes for the first one and maybe 30 minutes for the second as it was getting busy as guests came over from the pool but never near an hour did I see anyone wait. Barefoot by the Sea, as s stated by its name, located on the beach and near the large pool area. This was a nice place for burgers and fries and other foods as well. Burgers weren’t the best but when you’re hungry they sure filled the bill. All in all I would say the food and dining experience here was as good or better than most of the Sandals we have frequented and would certainly go back to any of the restaurants at this resort. Larry’s Piano Bar, located upstairs in the Caribbean section above the bar at Bayside. A very nice place to sit and throw back a few drinks and its air conditioned!
Pool & Beach
The pool on the Mediterranean side is very large and has a 4 sided pool bar in it, 3 you can swim up to and 1 you can reach from the walkways. As stated in other posts there is a shortage of towels and loungers if you get there after 8:00am or so, this wasn’t an issue for us as I scuba dove and had to be at the Scuba hut by 8:00. We would get up and get to the pool by 7:30, set out towels and loungers and go into breakfast at Mario’s each morning which was always a wonderful breakfast. The pool on the Caribbean side had a pool bar as well but not nearly as large. We did not visit this pool so can not comment as to the lounge and towels over here. The beach as stated by others is a public beach so the locals are there and some are peddling their wares. You can get a good buy here if you barter, but if you would rather not; a polite “no thank you” or “all set” and you would not be bothered again. The beach is beautiful and clean, we did not stay on the beach other than to go scuba but lots did.
The Staff
Again after reading some of the reviews here and on Trip Advisor Janet and I had some concerns with regard to the staffing issues. Well, we couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised through out our stay. I would venture to say that 95-98% of the staff was very engaging any time we crossed paths. From the bartenders to the wait staff to house keeping and concierge service, virtually all went out of there way to be pleasant and cordial. We never witness any rudeness, bitterness, or indifference. I do believe the new management that is in place there is making the changes that needed to be made. The manager of the resort is a Mr. Rousseau whom came from one of the Cuban resorts that Sandals has. There is new management at the water sports hut as well. Some of the staff we felt stood out as above and beyond were Sara in the concierge office, Nakisha at the Bayside restaurant, George our cook at Kimono’s, Narrisa who works in the vacation office and was seated with us at the returning guest dinner, Ian the water sports manager, and most especially Dionne who is the bartender up stairs in the piano bar. Dionne has the most infectious laugh and such a wonderful personality, you must visit her up there when you go and ask for a “Terminator” shot and tell here Janet & Bruce said hi.
In closing, Janet & I had a fabulous vacation and anniversary at Sandals Grand Antigua. We will absolutely revisit this resort again. We do believe if there were any short comings before they are well on their way to correcting them if they already haven’t been corrected as Janet & I have stated. Go there, relax, you’re on an island in the Caribbean, slow down and enjoy.
