My wife and I stayed at the resort from 11/18 to 11/28/2007 for our honeymoon and had a great time! Given a 10-day stay we have a lot to comment on, so I'll try to break it down by subject.
ARRIVING/DEPARTING: Expect to bring A LOT of patience when dealing with any airport in the caribbean, but V.C. Bird seems to be a special case. Basically, it was the worst part of the trip (not Sandals fault)...you'll need your elbows at the baggage claim and don't be shy about resisting the advances of the red caps as they're quite aggressive (Plus they charge you 1 USD per bag to bring your luggage about 20 feet). Gate agents are friendly and do their best in hard circumstances. Tranfers to/from the resort are done by taxi and are timely. Remember, there is a $20 embarkation tax (per person) when you leave; something I didn't know before hand (not sure what would happen if you couldn't pay).
ROOM: We stayed in a 1-bedroom penthouse suite on the 6th floor on the MV side (room 7603) and LOVED it. Certainly more than enough room; drawers and cubbies everywhere. Both flat-screen TV's worked well through-out our stay, with some brief interruption in satellite feed (happens even in the states). There was a wet bar and plenty of juice, water and alcohol (the local beer is pretty awful) restocked daily. If you catch the guy who restocks you, he's very friendly and will make changes per your request (i.e. more pineapple juice, less Wadadli beer).
We had a butler/room service level room and that really made a difference (Desmond was excellent). We weren't very demanding of them (Nabia always seemed to be on when we were just relaxing), but they always had our breakfast in our room on time and were accommodating with our few requests. Perhaps their greatest benefit was streamlining reservations and tours; they could get you into about anywhere given a day's notice. It was about the only way to get a cabana at the pool. They're not intrusive either; you're given a cell phone on arrival to contact them when needed. They check in on you once or twice during the day so you have plenty of privacy.
Bathrooms are spacious (double vanity) and very clean. Shower is strong and there is a marble bench built in. One gripe is that there is a small window in the shower and toilet that can't be closed or covered, so a moderate amount of light enters the bedroom at night. Not enough to keep you awake, but if you need total darkness, you'll need to be creative. We never noticed bugs or roaches in our room or in the hall.
GROUNDS/FACILITIES: Generally well maintained. The gardens on the CV side are wonderful and lush, giving the secluded pools/whirlpools on that side an intimate feel. MV side seemed a bit more like a big hotel. Pool tables could use some work on both sides. Public bathrooms are very clean. The beach is very calm (I was hoping for more waves :-P ) and the cleanest I've ever seen; seats available with little searching. The pool on the MV side was PACKED by around 9:30 or 10 most days, so we didn't spend much time there. There is still a little bit of construction going on around the MV plaza (minor things i.e. tile repair etc.). Also every few days or so they go around spraying the grounds with smoke to kill mosquitos.
DINING: Tended to be good. Mario's seemed to be a bit less impressive and inconsistent (my wife loathed that restaurant). The other places were pretty good actually. The sushi bar was by far our favorite, led by Danny who did a great job mixing caribbean touches to asian dishes; we ruined more than one dinner by getting appetizers there (spicy tuna roll and black shrimp nagiri were our favorite). Room service tended to be busy, but prompt when you got through. Bartenders are friendly and open minded (Andy in the sushi bar was great)
ENTERTAINMENT: Mostly located on the CV side. All tours leave from that side as well; something I hope Sandals changes soon. Music tended to be sort of typical resort fair, nothing too out of the box (i.e. Bob marley). I was hoping for more authentic music and less "pop reggae" but it's a mega-resort :-).
Overall, it was a good experience and I would recommend it to others. Mosquitos numerous and aggresive (never had a bite on my finger before) but a bit of Deep Woods OFF will do. Staff was quite friendly and helpful. Once sandals fleshes out the MV side (wireless internet would be cool) and makes meals a bit more consistent, it'll be an even better place to visit. Enjoy!
