We returned to England on 8th September from a one-week holiday at The Halcyon Cove and are pleased to report a mostly good to very good holiday experience.
The location is excellent, the hotel is well set in attractively maintained gardens and borders the beach.
The beach is long and wide and made up of very fine white sand that is occasionally raked by the ground staff and generally kept in a clean condition. Because sand is suspended in the seawater, the water is a little milky rather than being crystal clear.
On the beach there are plenty of sun loungers and shade although some shades need repair.
There is a restaurant on a pier to which all-inclusive guests are entitled to two free visits each week of their stay. Both the quality of the food and service at this Warri Pier restaurant are very good and were praised by all guests. Other visits apart from continental breakfasts are to be paid for.
Drinks and food during the day are served from a beach bar and a nearby hut. The quality of the food there is fine for lunch and range of drinks is good. The quality of the draught beer, however, leaves a lot to be desired because usually it is not cold enough and is over-gassed. The bar staff were reluctant to accept this criticism and seemed to take it personally. A new executive manager arrived several days ago and immediately took action to correct this fault.
I suspect that his influence in the future will result in many small improvements that need to be made.
The room and the bath room were more than adequate although a little tired. They were reasonably well decorated but door fittings were in poor condition. The air conditioning was good and quiet.
The staff almost without exception are inclined to stand off a little and wait for guests to show some interest and friendliness before they respond. Thereafter, they are both warm and friendly as well as efficient.
There are two other bars in the resort and both of them are quite in the evenings but nonetheless enjoyable.
The buffet food in the main restaurant is of good quality and has a home-cooked flavour and there is usually a local Caribbean influence in at least one dish.
The reception staff are efficient.
We went on the two most popular excursions: Shirley Heights on Sunday evening (great band and beer) and the around the island cruise. Neither of these are expensive and both of them are potentially great trips.
There are nearby bars and restaurants.
Overall this is a good holiday resort but because it is relatively small a one-week holiday might be adequate.
The holiday was very enjoyable and made even more so by the friendly guests we met there.
