I stayed at the Rex with my wife a couple of years back, we flew in from barbados on an "Air Taxi" and boy were we glad to get our feet back on solid ground!! The hotel is in a good spot with a nice big airy reception, our room was on the ground floor and opened up onto the pool.It was a good sized room, clean and spacious with a fridge, TV and all you need to be comfortable. I love food a lot and i can say that the food here was good most of the time, we never had to complain and we never went hungry! Plenty to eat and a good choice, i particularly like fish and chicken, fresh salads, fruit, rice, pasta etc etc so we were happy. There is a lovely sandy beach right there and of course the sea is clear and blue as you would expect in the caribean. The beach is also up at the quiet end so its nice just to chill and swim etc. I even met an old mate from England who now lives in New York, by the pool one morning!! He was there with his family and two lovely kids.....we were both shocked but happy to see each other. We hired a moped and rode around the whole Island stopping off at various places like "English harbour" looking round "St johns" the capital on our way through and a host of other places, i even rode through a "rainforest" it was truly amazing. We went on a Jeep safari (hold on tight!), Through some crazy off-road spots, off the beaten track. Halfway through we stopped at a place where we all put our shorts on, got in a kayak and rowed to a private beach for lunch and some Swimming (Drinks Included!), before continuing back to the Rex. We also went on a tour up to "Shirley Heights" where there were live bands, more food and more drinks!!. I highly recommend the Excursions but shop around for the best prices. A couple of times we went out in St johns at night to various clubs, didnt feel threatened even though we were the only tourists there!!! Antigua is beautiful, go there have a look around the island, be polite and sensible and you will have a wonderfull time. Barbados is My Paradise, Jamaica is Special although a little "edgy" (which i like!), Antigua is a good all rounder........oh and the Rex is a Great choice as your base!

My husband and I stayed at the Rex from 6/21-6/27. I have to say that it was a great value for the money! Everyone at the hotel was so friendly and nice. We booked a superior room but wound up with an oceanfront room instead after having problems getting to Antigua, they gladly took care of us. The hotel is a little older, but still nicely mantained and landscaped. The bathroom fixures were older in the room, but hey, they worked and that was my only main concern! The hotel had more of a laid-back vibe and was a lot less crowded than the monster Sandals next door (way cheaper too!).

The beach was lovely, and there was no shortage of beach chairs to lounge in. We decided to get the All-inclusive package, and we were glad we did. The breakfasts at the Arawak Terrace were good, and the dinners had a great variety to choose from. Since we went on many day trips, we only ate lunch once at the hotel, and it was just hamburgers and whatnot. At night after dinner we strolled along the beach (beautiful!).

If you need to take a taxi or rent-a-car, G.G. is your man. We used him for 2 day trips around the island and he was so knowledgeable and friendly. Some places to go see are Nelson's Dockyard, Devil's Bridge, and a trip into St. John's. If you want a boat tour of the island, book through Adventure Antigua, they were great!

The Rex Halcyon is somewhere I would definitely stay again!!! An awesome value for the money you pay.

I booked my holiday, and then I sat back and read the reviews, so as the date approached I found I was getting more nervous about what I would find. Please don't worry - the Rex is an old hotel, but it is kept very clean, the rooms are a good size, the beach is great and the food is fine. I booked a standard room on a room only basis. I must have been given a superior room in the end as I had a TV and a fridge. There are packages in the hotel as it is low season (the hotel is only 40% occupied at this time of year). So, 4 breakfasts for the price of 3, and EC150 for evening meal for 2 and a bottle of wine. The hotel food is fine. The lovely breakfast chef cooked red snapper for my breakfast on the last morning, and I am still raving about it. There's also a reasonable BBQ at lunchtime by the beach. The Beach restaurant further down is OK, a little overrated, but I had good sushi there. The best meal I had was at the Bay restaurant at Tradewinds, a 15-minute walk up the hill, and a great place to watch the sunset. Food there was splendid. In St John's I discovered Mama Lolly's (vegetarian and serves fish), a good place to sit and have lovely coffee. I should add that I have celiac disease so eating out can be problematic, especially as there is a very low incidence of the disease in the Caribbean so they have no concept of what it is. I had no problems getting safe food in the end.
The beach is really lovely and the Rex is at the quiet end. In the evenings you can watch masses of fish under the Warri Pier. I was able to have a decent jog every morning before the sun came up, and behind the resort is a salt pond full of pelicans and egrets.
And the best part: we were there over the full moon, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, baby turtles starting coming out of the water in huge numbers. No one was expecting it, and it was a wonderful sight. We spent hours returning them to the sea, and it was a privilege to be there.
So, a good budget choice, bearing in mind that the Caribbean is never a cheap option (but it is miles cheaper than a weekend in the Republic of Ireland!!!)

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Halcyon Hotel. It was much more than we expected. It is a 3 star hotel but with 4/5star qualities. We changed bedroom but only because the bathroom light was broken. The room they put us into was wondeful and at no extra charge. Staff go out of their way to be helpful. Rooms are spotless and are cleaned every day.Food in hotel is more than adequate. Pool towels are free and you change them as many times a day. Evening entertainment finishes dead on 11pm which is good because by then you are so tired.Plenty of activities on the beach. Catamaran trip is well worth a try. If all you want is a relaxing holiday at a good resort then this is the place, You can reach anywhere at the other side of the island easily within 40 mins. No ticket touts or timeshare sellers. No smelly drainage, water safe to drink. Can't wait to go back in December to the same plavce.

After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor about the Haylcon Cove by Rex, I was a little worried, I must admit. But once I arrived at the hotel, all my worries disappeared.

Breakfast was good at the Terrace Restaurant and there is alot of choice, from cereal, to fruit, to fry-ups, there is something for everyone. If this restaurant gets a bit boring and you want a change of scenery, then the Warri Pier is located on the beach and overlooking the beautiful sea where its very light and airy.

Lunch was good, (BBQ) but it was mostly the same every day!

Dinner at the Terrace was different every night, one night might be seafood, another would be Italian, so there was definitely variety. If you want something alittle extra special, the Warri Pier have an Al a Carte Menu on most nights and the food was amazing there!!! I highly recommend the Lobster!!

We found two other great places to eat and they were The Beach and Coconut Grove, they are a short walk on the Beach from the Hotel and I felt very safe, even though I was with my boyfriend.

The Hotel staff were great, especially Mauricia, she was fantastic and we even went Mango picking with her!! If you see her, please say "Nic and Ron say Hi" She does a Great cocktail, we called it her Special! Big Hi to Heather aswell! Not sure what all the FUSS was about with Dwayne, I thought he was rather rude and miserable( Don't say Hi from us:))!!

It was my first holiday with my Boyfriend and I hope this will be one of many, as we had such a great time and we met some great people. Hi to George and Alison from Swansea and Simon and Hayley from St Albans. I loved our early afternoons at the bar drinking Mauricia's Specials, they tasted great, but they were very potent, some nights we didn't even make it for dinner!!:))

I wouldn't hesitate to go back to the Halycon Cove by Rex, the hotel was very clean and I have no complaints about our Room. I have been to some great places around the world and for a 3 star hotel, I thought it was superb!! Sandals was on the same stretch of Beach as us, but I thought we were at the best end. A few people were moaning at the bar, about one thing or another, but for me its just nice to be away from Rainy London, Work and the Rat Race. Its nice to be waited on in a place that can only be described as.................Paradise!!!
