Rex Halcyon is definitely worth a stay, but be very realistic about what you expect to get for your money.
I have just returned from a 5-night stay and I'm glad to be back home to the comfort of my house.
Here are some pros and cons:
Pros:
Great beach - it really is fantastic and if you walk down the beach for 15 mins you can find some really remote white sandy beaches with fantastic blue sea
Bed - We stayed in an upgraded double room and the bed was huge and comfy - just like our bed at home
Cons:
Food - it's just like Rex's hotel in St Lucia - basic 3 star buffet breakfasts with dickie birds flying around the restaurant (yes - live birds!)
Staff - it would be wrong to say that they are rude, however I think it fair to say that most of the staff are ignorant to the needs of the average customer. However, this appeared to apply to all Antiguans - they were all pretty miserable and everything seemed too much trouble.
First impressions last - upon my arrival, I was joining my partnter who had been there for a few days previous. The lady in charge of reception had my room key and realised that I had travelled for around 12 hours to get there and simply told me (3 times) to sit and wait until she was free. Eventually, after 30 mins, she gave me the key (it took her all of 10 seconds).
Location - if you don't want to eat in the hotel restaurants (I think there were 2 but I didn't fancy them as Rex food doesn't do it for me), you could try the local restaurants. However there are only 2 within walking distance - Coconut Grove and The Beach. Both are OK. C'Grove is trying hard to be posh and The Beach is trying to be laid back and trendy. I must admit, that whilst the food was fine, I was really bored with these places after day 3.
Need a car - If you like all-inclusive 3 star resorts and have no intention of venturing out, you will like this place. If you want to go and explore and also eat out and about, you either need a car or you need plenty of money for taxis. St Johns is close by (15 mins in a taxi and costs 25 to 35 EC$).
