Friendly, nice, clean, helpful central hotel located on one of the best tourist visited beaches in Antigua. Daily trips and fab entertainment for all guests arranged; great breakfasts; accompanied by a chef that makes eggs any which way you desire freshly. There is also a lovely restaurant on the peer. Carib Bar keeps the evenings exciting with special guests and tasty cocktails as you look out into the sea from the comfort of your hotel grounds...one step from the beach. The hotel is absolutely a hidden gem; we had a fab room with a balconcy over looking the sea and gardens, sky TV, 2 mins from the pool, beach and sea and was hundreds cheaper than others. It is perfect for travellers that want to explore the country but come back to dab in the entertainment provided; however if you are the kind of person that travels thousands of miles to be in a hotel environment for 2 weeks, it may not be the place for you.
If you want to venture out in the AM for breakfast I would recommend the Coconut Grove, just step out of the hotel onto the beach and walk along the sea / beach front for ten mins. You will be eating breakfast while looking out to what can only be described as a picture postcard of paradise. In regards to the restaurants in Antigua; one sentence of caution; 'Don't believe the Hype'. We on the first night went to a restaurant that we found in one of the many good food and drink guides. It was a restaurant that had no ambience – like another London restaurants; they were playing heavy metal instead of the advertised Jazz, it was generic international food and my partner and I were the only people dinning there on a Friday night. Instead, seek out understated local places were locals and tourists will dine alike; such as Shirley Heights (it is not necessary to visit on the Sunday evening when it is packed through with tourists), which in my opinion does the best Lobster while looking out to English Harbour. The Beach; again a walk away from the hotel – tasty lamb chops on the beach and fab cocktails. Russell’s, stunning restaurant in an 17th century stone building over looking Fort James. Great Jazz accompany a good wine list. Lastly OJ’s – understated beautiful restaurant near the rain forest; live Jazz band that relates the native of each tune to you giving a real feeling of intimacy.
My best suggestion is get a car, we hired one for the whole of our trip and it enabled us to see the whole of Antigua on our terms; rather than a paid for booked trip that is dictated. They drive on the left side; but as there are many pot wholes and hills; as 4x4 is well recommended. We were able to experience beaches that were off the tourist track and go to places not widely advertised but are hidden gems. I would however, definitely suggest going to a boat trip around the island, we were taken to a smaller secluded Island named Green Island and went out snorkelling around the stunning coral before being given a BBQ lunch and plenty of time to chill out on the beach and explore the island. For all over water sports, I would suggest asking around and negotiating the best prices. Lastly, you maybe tempted to visit Barbuda, the sister island of Antigua. You can go by the Burbuda express which takes 90mins across the Atlantic ocean. If you are prone to sea sickness, I would not suggest it. However, if not – it’s a great experience. The island its self is very secluded and the beaches not used as much as Antigua’s; there USP is the stunning pink sand beaches populated by tiny pink shells giving the unique aesthetics. I would suggest a day trip or over night stay at most as there is not much to see and do and the island is a lot quieter with one town; however, maybe you would like this.
