This review is a bit late because my wife and me stayed at the
Halcyon October 23-30 2004.
We got to Antigua at 1:00pm after 12 hours of travel and a Red-Eye
from Denver to JFK and then onto Antigua. It was a relief to see
this awesome Island from the air, and seeing the beautiful bay and
crystal clear water as soon as you reach land. Went through
immigration very quickly and then picked up our luggage. There was no
need to have a bag handler take your bags, it is a very short walk
through customs and then to the rental car counter, taxi stand etc.
Customs was a breeze, they only asked if this was our first trip to
Antigua, I said YES and they let us through. Picked up the rental car
(steering wheel on right side, as well as driving on the left), and
had immediate problems getting adjusted being from the States. It was
a long trip to the Halcyon, got a little lost but we found it after a
few U-Turns. Check-in was easy, they already had our room ready, and
we were greeted with a much needed Rum Punch.
Room-
We paid $70 a night for a superior room through hotels.com and found
that to be a fair price. The room was in the back of the complex
against the hill, but we had a great ocean view on the second floor.
There were some loud bug noises coming from the hill, but you can’t
hear them when you get inside the room. The room was just like the
pictures and had everything it promised along with a nice balcony to
hang out on and enjoy the ocean view. Furniture was fine, the A/C
worked well and the bed was comfortable. There was also satellite TV
that had many channels, I was able to see the Red Sox take the series
and watch a little football. House keeping staff was very nice and
did a great job of cleaning everyday, and I left them $20 dollars on
our last day. There was no safe in our room, but after talking to
some time-share guests they advised that this is a very honest place.
I left valuable items in our room with no problem at all. The only
thing I wish we had was a mini-fridge, you can rent them from the
hotel for $12 I believe. They did not have any available when we were
there, I should have contacted the hotel before we left and requested
one.
Beach-
We didn’t stay at the Halcyon for the luxurious rooms. Best all
around beach I have been too, better then Sandals Royal Bahamian
because this beach had the awesome Palapas (little beach huts). I
thought of all the Dickenson Bay locations that Halcyon was the best
and even Sandals did not have any Palapas.
No problem to get to the beach at 9:00am and get a good hut and a few
chairs. The tide was a little rough while we were there, so the water
was not as clear as I hoped. The sand was really soft, easy on the
feet, and it stayed cool, never got really hot. There were quite a
few vendors, and 99% of them were nice and respectful. After they
have seen you a few times, they stop bothering you. We hung out at
the beach all day for five of our seven days, and loved every minute
of it. The beach grill has pretty good burgers, chicken, and hot
dogs, but it was about $10 dollars a plate for a burger and fries. We
did not do all-inclusive, so I never bought any drinks from the bar.
I went to a grocer store, and convenience store at Antigua Village
and bought some sodas and Beer. Beer was $2 a bottle at AV, and $1 a
bottle at the Grocery store for Wadadli (local beer) versus $3 at all
the bars and hotel. We packed them in a soft cooler and drank all day
on the beach using the ice from the hotel icemaker. Never went to
the pool, it was kind of small, and ruled by kids. There were many
families here with kids, but it was absolutely no bother.
We also noticed that being American we were in the minority at the
Halcyon. Most of the guests were from England or Wales, which was
great. Nice change of pace, and we met so many nice people.
Restaurants-
The only restaurant near Halcyon Cove was “The Beach”, and it was
very good. We had breakfast there a few times, and dinner there three
nights. Lots of variety so you don’t have to have the same thing
every night. All of it was very good, and the prices were not too
bad. We went into St Johns one night and ate at Hemingway’s, which
was very good, and a great atmosphere. Also ate at Millers one night,
and we were the only people there. It is in a beautiful location
overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The food was good, but there were many
many mosquitoes, and my wife couldn’t take it so we cut dinner
short. If I were to go back, I would wear long pants. We also heard
the pizza place across from Halcyon was good, but it was closed while
we were there.
We also went to a grocery store in St Johns one morning, and bought
quite a bit of groceries and beer for around $40 dollars.
Excursions-
We went on an excursion to Prickly Pear Island for snorkeling, lunch,
and all the alcohol you like for $60 each. The guy that runs this is
named Miguel, he is the nicest guy, and runs a very nice family
business. Snorkeling was exceptional, lunch and drinks were great. We
had a wonderful time, we should have gone twice. I also heard Eli’s
Eco Adventure was really good, but we didn’t do it, and I wish we
would have for $90.
We took a day and drove around half of the Island, it is much bigger
then you think looking on a map. We went to Jolly Harbor but could
not get to the beach because of a flooded road. We drove down south
to Dog Beach, which was nice, pretty water but rough tide. Kept
driving down though the Rain Forrest and then into English Harbor
area. Paid $5 each and went to Shirley Height Park, took a tour, ate
lunch and looked at the beautiful view from Shirley Heights.
The bay there is really cool, we went down to the Ocean Inn right
below Shirley Heights and went for a swim. You can snorkel right off
the beach, which wasn’t too bad. Next time I go I will book a night
or two at the Ocean Inn ($90 a night), and go to the party at Shirley
Heights on Sunday. Also next time I will get to Half Moon Bay, and
the east side of the Island.
Overall-
This was a great trip, just wish it was easier to get to Antigua from
the Western U.S. I would definitely go back to Antigua, and stay at a
different hotel to experience more of the Island. Halcyon did get the
job done this time.
