We went to rex halcyon cove in June 2004 and found it to be quite run down. The air conditioning unit did not cool our room despite being left on for over 24 hours and making loud whirring noises. We upgraded for the remaining 6 days for 100 USD which was better and the air con worked. The Pier which looks great in photos was old and held up by wooden stilts that were wearing very very thin places, worrying to walk onto at times! We also found some staff pretty miserable. There was a problem with our reservation, we had booked All Inclusive but their records said room only. Although very polite there was no urgency in rectiflying this problem and it was annoying carrying a card around for the first couple of days
to have things charged to our room. We were also worried about getting drinks etc by mistake that may not be on the All Inc plan. In the end we had to call our agent in the UK and ask them to inform the hotel that yes, we had paid for All Inc. We were also dissappointed one night to find that the only bar open at the hotel had no beer, no bacardi, no vodka, no coke, lemonade or orange juice! There is also not much to do in the evenings in Antigua, so its best for honeymooners. 1 week was enough for us as we like nightlife and shops. 2 weeks would have drove me insane! Good bits; Beach is gorgeous - Dickinson Bay is said to be one of the best in the world. Although locals try to sell you things all day they are polite and not pushy. Waterskiing at the excursion desk was double the price of the hut to the right of the hotel on the beach. Food was good too, lots of it and lunch is a la carte. Pool was nice and duty free spirits and cigarettes in St. Johns were very cheap. All in all quite a nice holiday, the beach and sea made up for other problems but wouldnt go back. Also, for those who havent been to Antigua, customs give everyones luggage a thorough search before check in, in front of all other passengers - a bit embarrassing when youve got a case full of dirty laundry!
