My family and I just got back from the Rex Halcyon in Antigua. This hotel is extremely run-down and in dire need of renovations. The only consolation is that the beach is beautiful. Front desk staff are extremely unfriendly and useless. They just want your money, that's all. They act more like disgruntled employees - not like courteous, eager to help staff. The nicest people are in housekeeping.

We went european and was so glad that we did. We ate at different places on the island, but it wasn't cheap. Our money went fast.

DO NOT drink the water at the hotel. It gave us diarrhea. Even the homemade fruit punch gave us diarrhea. Buy your own bottled water, but you'll have to drink it room temperature since the hotel doesn't provide a mini refrigerator. You have to pay a daily rate for one if you want one in your room. The AC was a joke. It only got cold after dark, but when the sun came up the room would get hot again. Even without you touching the AC.

Certain parts of the grounds always looked wet and smelled like raw sewage. Even when the sun was piping hot the grounds were still wet, so I guess that it is raw sewage. Entertainment was a joke. I got more entertainment watching television in my room. Folks, this hotel is going belly-up. I found out that the hotel was due to close on August 1st, but I guess that more money started rolling in so they postponed the date.

My advice to the staff is this: I understand that you may be a bit upset since there is so much uncertainty about the future of the hotel, but you still have to maintain a positive attitude towards your job. You never know, one of the guests may want to invest in the hotel or on the island and may be so impressed with your service that they may offer you a job. Come on guys, WE are the reason why you are still there. At least give us some courteous service. Even if you don't mean it, at least make us feel welcome to this crummy dump.

Thank God we had a car to get around and get away from the hotel. If we hadn't, then we would have really had a miserable time.

I have traveled extensively and definatley know when the staff give a hoot or not, four months later and I still can't figure out who was in charge. The Warri Pier was supposed to be great but we never found out for ourselves because they actually had the nerve to turn my short wearing husband away from the dump due to their "dress-code". We came to a tropical Island to relax not stress on ironing our pants, we were allowed to eat a horrible lunch and get treated like annoyances one day for lunch (lucky us!). The other option for food was the buffet, we tried it once and it was absolutely awful and we cannot believe that this place is getting away with the lower than low standards in all aspects of this hotel. They should pay the guests for tolerating such rudeness while trying to get away from the jerks in our own countries. I cannot express how far to stay away from this horrible joke of a resort.

Was a bit dubious to stay here initially as our previous holiday was to Sandals in St Lucia. Was'nt expecting it to be such a big complex. Everything was fairly basic, but was clean and a lot better than i was expecting. I would definately return as it is such good value for money. The buffet restuarant had different themes each night but tended to be very similar none the less. We did get a bit bored with the food one night and went to a chinese restaurant called Delicious, they gave you way too much and was very reasonable so highly reccomend it. Overall a very good holiday and the beach was the best I've ever been to and I've been to other caribbean islands. It has been voted 4th best beach in the world it is stunning.

Having read all the awful reports on Trip Advisor before I left for the caribbean, I felt I had to report back for all those British families intending to visit the Rex Halcyon Cove. Yes the buildings and interiors are a little tired and probably due a makeover but how many hours a day do you spend sitting in a hotel room in the Caribbean? On the advice of trip advisor reports, we upgraded to a poolside room before travelling and it was the best decision we made. Don't really know what the standard accommodation was like because we didn't get to see those rooms, they were located towards the back of the property. Also, the deluxe beachfront rooms do not have a private terrace or balcony which makes sitting outside enjoying a glass of wine at sunset extremely difficult. Our room was in a perfect location, ground floor, yards from the pool and yards from the beach, with a small terrace which had table, chairs and a sunlounger (the terrace gave us somewhere to sit and enjoy a couple of drinks at night once the children had gone to bed). We had two children with us and they had placed two z-beds in the room with proper mattresses on them. The bed we had was huge and the room was not cramped at all with four of us in there. The kids reckoned their beds were really comfy. The sheets and towels were changed daily and the room was kept immaculately clean by a very friendly member of housekeeping. The only niggle we had was the water pressure! The shower and bath taps trickled rather than poured but we managed. We had no problems changing our beach towels, sometimes twice a day and all of the staff were friendly and extremely helpful

We took the all-inclusive option which worked perfectly for us. Others who had not (especially those with children) certainly wished they had taken this option, although it is possible to buy it once you have arrived. The food was varied and plentiful and apart from the themed meals in the evenings, the children ate a huge amount, especially at breakfast. Apparently, eating in the hotel is expensive if not on all-inclusive and if you have small kids, close local restaurants are few and far between.

We have been to Antigua before, amongst other Caribbean islands and we can honestly say that this holiday was easily as good as others. The location of the hotel is great on one of the best beaches around, close to St Johns and the airport.

Just back from two weeks at the Rex (3 July - 17 July). After reading the other reviews I was worried about the standard of the resort but everything was fine and we had a great time. We were AI and the food was good every day. The Superior room was clean and spacious and the beach was great. Don't let the negative reviews put you off, the Rex is great value for money. I've stayed at Club Antugua and Club St Lucia and the Rex is a similar standard with a better beach.
