I was amazed by the number of very negative reviews about the Rex Halcyon Cove, and wonder if the facilities and services simply decline during high season. We went for a week in the off-season, July 2003, as a group of 3 families, and had a perfectly lovely time. When we arrived we learned we could upgrade our garden room reservations to beach suites for an additional price, and were glad we did. The rooms, while not luxurious, were perfectly comfortable and had everything we needed, including a fold-out sofabed. Upon request the hotel provided an extra cot in each room at no charge, so our kids had sleepovers each night in alternating rooms, giving us parents a break and some privacy. The beachfront location of the rooms was ideal for the kids, and of course Dickenson Bay is incomparable. The other guests were primarily British, mostly families. The food was about what you'd expect from a moderately-priced all-inclusive resort, nothing to write home about, but well prepared and plentiful, and there was always something 9-year-olds would eat. Breakfasts and lunches had pretty much the same buffet selections each day, but the food isn't the reason you stay at the Rex Halcyon. On several evenings we arranged for babysitters to take the kids to dinner, and the adults went out to local restaurants.
As far as service, while not as friendly as, say, Grenadians, we found the Antiguan staff to be accommodating and efficient by Caribbean standards. A small tip to the towel lady on the first day insured that we had clean, fluffy beach towels every day--with a smile. The kids used the pool--which was fine, by the way--a few times, but the beach was so inviting they spent most of their time in the beautiful, calm turquoise Caribbean waters. We bought from the tee shirt vendors and the hair braiding ladies on the beach, who were all very polite and friendly, not aggressive at all. Our take on this resort: it's a good value for the money. A bit shabby but still genteel, it could use a little sprucing up, but is a comfortable, relaxing place to spend a laid-back week in a beautiful setting with no worries.
